If you could travel backward or forward in time, which direction would you go,and what would you do
when you got there?lt's the stuff of books,television shows,movies and daydreams,from H.G.Wells'The
Time Machine to the Back to the Future trilogy()-not to mention the recent movies Frequently Asked
Questions About Time Traveling,Time Traveler's Wife and Hot Tub Time Machine.
There s no such thing as time travel as it appears in science fiction. It's not possible now.nor can it ever
Lecome possible in the future. We can prove that to ourselves simply by answering the question:"where are
they all.the time travelers?"If time travel were ever to become possible in the remote future,we would all.
nght now,be crowded out by people hanging around in silver catsuits(紧身衣).
"This kind of time machine would violate a fundamental rule that cause comes before effect,"said
Stephen Hawking, the great physicist,in a TV program on the Discovery channel."I believe things cannot
make themselves impossible. So it won'be possible to travel back to the past."
Bul it does happen all the time in books. It's an appealing fantasy-to be able to actually go back to see
what i was really like.No matter what the fantasy, though, all writers must create for us a world which is well
dese to get heroes and heroines involved and thus arrest our eyes. The major issue is to decide whether your
characters can change the past.
If ume travel is in faot possible,it seems to me the only way it could work is for the traveler to find
hmslf transported to a place where he can neither be seen by,nor interact in any way with the locals. He is
merely a watcher.A witness to the facts. That may explain where all those silver catsuited people are-
they're wahin inblyove your shoulder while you read these notes.
28.What is the wrng purpuse of the first paragraph?
A.To inroduce the forms of space travel.
B.To show the popularity of time travel.
C.To display the trendy theme of writing.
D.To present best-selling fictional novels.
29.What does the underlined word violate probably mean?
A.Refuse.
B.Clarify.
C.Go against.
D.Make for.
【A-025】英语试卷第4页(共8页)
30.What might time-travel books have in common?
A.Striking names.
B.An appealing storyline.
C.Changeable characters.
D.A well-planned setting.
31.What does the author imply in the last paragraph?
A.He is doubtful about time travel.
B.He highlights the role of a traveler.
C.He is positive about science fiction.
D.He wants to wear a silver catsuit too.

The life expectancy of trees interests researchers partly because irees and other plants remove carbon from
the atmosphere.and older trees are thought to store more carbon than younger ones. The persistence of trees
could thus play a role in slowing climate change.Trees die as a result of severe damage.but some have
overcome storms.droughts, fires, and more to survive for thousands of years, according to a recent essay:
“On Tree Longevit(长寿)"
Generally speaking, trees do not die so much as they are killed."Trees can indeed live indefinitely, but
this does not happen,"says the author Franco Biondi,an ecoclimatologist and tree-ring scientist at the Univer-
sity of Nevada,Reno."Because eventually an external agent, biotic or abiotic (a living thing or a non-living
one such as a physical condition),ends up killing them."Tree killers include environmental threats such as
droughts.wildfires, severe weather and injurious insects-as well as human threats such as logging and fires
set to clear forests for hunting or pastureland()
The uncertainty about the oldest living tree perhaps illustrates larger questions about deciding tree ages-
a poinl that the review essay tackles. Some scientists'estimates of tree ages draw on unreliable data and
methods,including anecdotal()reports,Biondi writes.The most credible age-determination methods
are analyses of tree rings, with help from radiocarbon dating when necessary. The rings of old trees can also
serve as an invaluable record of climate history, with wider rings indicating better years.
David Stahle.a geographer and tree longevity researcher at the University of Arkansas, who was not
involved in the review essay, used words such as "excellent"and "comprehensive"to describe it.But he
takes issue with the assumption that trees can potentially live forever."The likelihood, all things being equal,
that trees are immortal seems untrue to me,"he says."I love the idea. It's a romantic idea, but,I mean,
come on.But evidence of aging could be out there and just not yet found.
32.What can be inferred from Paragraph 2?
A.Humans caused forest loss.
B.More trees died than killed.
C.Some trees die due to old age.
D.There exist some tree-killers.
33.What can be the most reliable for deciding the age of a tree?
A.Records.
B.Radiation.
C.Tree rings.
D.Tree branches.
34.What does David Stahle think of the idea that tree can be long-lived?
A.Doubtful.
B.Supportive.
C.Objective.
D.Uncertain.
35.What is the best title for the text?
A.More Trees Would Be Saved
B.How to Lengthen A Tree's Life?
C.Trees Can Live Indefinitely
D.What Affects A Tree's Life?

Text 10
M:The history of the cable car in San Francisco is an interesting one.Cable cars were invented before the
automobile,in the days when horse-drawn streetcars were a popular and inexpensive form of public transportation.
One day,Andrew Hallidie saw a terrible accident involving a streetcar. This event apparently influenced his
decision to try to find a safer way to transport people.
Hallidie thought he could use wire rope to make wire cables. He believed that the cables would be strong enough
to pull the cable cars.Next,he needed someone to help him design the cars.He hired William E.Eppelsheimer,a
German engineer,to design the first cable car line.Hallidie also needed the formal permission to build the system.
He obtained it from a lawyer named Benjamin Brooks.
On August 2,1873,Hallidie himself drove the first cable car from Jones Street to Keamey Street by way of Clay
Street This line came to be known as the Clay Street Hill line.About one month after the test run,the Clay Street
Hill line opened for public use. From that point on,other lines opened in San Francisco as well as in other U.S.
cities and cities overseas.San Francisco, however,is the only city today where the cable car still operates.
