Paragraph 1:
As they came in my direction, I put on my brightest and happiest smile. In my sight, I found a lot of homeless people in need of something to eat were waiting in the queue. In the next few hours I was very busy giving out the meat and other food items into their hands. And what moved me most ①was that when those hungry people went off, they also left with some friendly words of gratitude. Though I felt rather tired and worn out, I still seemed delighted. Seeing what I did make their day, I felt deep pleasure welling up from the bottom of my heart.
Paragraph 2:
I was so happy that I had earned my service hours in this way.

A
A new study has found that a child’s reading speed can be improved by simply increasing the space between letters within a piece of text. The research, led by Dr. Steven Stagg of Anglia Ruskin University (ARU), examined the benefits of letter spacing and colored overlays(套图透明膜)among children.
Two groups of children, dyslexic(有阅读障碍的) and non-dyslexic children, were asked to read four texts with either standard or extra-large letter spacing, both with and without a colored overlay. They were instructed to read the text out loud while being recorded. The recording was used to measure the number of errors they made — specifically missed words, added words, wrong words, and pronunciation—as well as the participants’ reading time.
The study discovered that text with increased space between letters provided a benefit for both groups. On average, the dyslexia group showed a 13% increase in reading speed, while the group of non-dyslexic children showed a 5% increase. In addition to improving reading speed, it also resulted in a significant decline in the number of words missed by the children with dyslexia. However, the study found that colored overlays had no significant impact on reading speed or the reduction of errors for either group.
Dr. Stagg, Senior Lecturer in Psychology at ARU, said:“We believe extra-large letter spacing works by reducing what is known as the ’crowding effect’,which can hamper the recognition of letters and reduce reading speed.”
“Our findings strongly suggest that teachers can be confident that all children would be helped by increased letter spacing in reading materials,” Dr. Stagg added.“While we found that colored overlays provided little benefit, we suggest children should be encouraged to use overlays if they find these help their reading. Colored overlays may not increase reading speeds, but they may extend reading stamina (持久力).Previous research suggests their benefits may not become apparent if reading time is less than 10 minutes and the short reading duration of the tests in our study may have put colored overlays at a disadvantage.”
根据第二段中的“Two groups of children... out loud while being recorded.”
√
1.Which of the following best describes the research process in Paragraph 2?
A.To illustrate, group and report.
B.To read, instruct and measure.
C.To question, assume and prove.
D.To categorize, record and count.
根据第三段中的“In addition to improving ... the children with dyslexia.” 故选A项。
√
2.What can we learn about increased letter spacing from Paragraph 3?
A.It reduces reading errors.
B.It sharpens reading skills.
C.It arouses reading interest.
D.It enhances reading comprehension.
√
3.What does the underlined word “hamper” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A.Obtain.
B.Prevent.
C.Change.
D.Involve.
故选A项。
√
4.What can be inferred about colored overlays from the last paragraph?
A.They might not have been evaluated fairly.
B.They might not be recommended by experts.
C.They might work better in short reading.
D.They might have some disadvantages.
B
You’ve stopped at a café on your way to work, and next thing you know, your latte foam is staring at you. You’ve had the same furniture for years, but today your cup board looks sad. You’re lying in the park with your friends, and now Nezha is floating by in the clouds—are they seeing him too?!
Why do we see human faces everywhere?
Until now, it has been unclear as to why the brain processes visual signals and represents them in our mind as human faces. However, researchers from the School of Psychology at the University of Sydney have tried evaluating this phenomenon.
The facial recognition response happens fast, only taking a few hundred milli seconds. From an evolutionary perspective, the researchers suggest that the benefit of“never missing a face” outweighs(超过) the error where lifeless objects are seen as faces. Despite knowing that the object you are seeing is not a human face, the perception(知觉) of a face stays. This is known as“face pareidolia”.
Pareidolia refers to the tendency to impose a meaningful interpretation on an unclear stimulus (刺激物), making one see an object, pattern or meaning when there is none. Pareidolia was originally considered a symptom of mental disorder, but it is now viewed as a normal human tendency.
Pareidolia has been investigated by scientists and has been present in art and literature for a long period of time. In Shakespeare’s Hamlet, Hamlet demonstrates his supposed madness in his exchange with Polonius by telling him that he can see a camel in the sky.
The researchers set out to investigate whether a detected pareidolia face would be cast off as a false detection or be analysed for a facial expression. The study participants were presented with series of faces and asked to rate each face expression on a scale from angry to happy. The series involved a mix of both real and pareidolia faces.
The researchers have found that pareidolia faces are not cast off as false detections, but rather undergo an internal“facial expression analysis”,in the same way a real face would. This is likely because humans are deeply social beings. Additionally, they found that biases(成见) often seen when judging human faces in the analysis of the pareidolia faces.
So, the next time that you see an angry tree, don’t be surprised and remember it’s not personal.

D项“You might also do better at work”与前一句构成递进关系,符合语境。故选D项。
Having a good sense of humor makes you more enjoyable to be around. _____________________________.Here’s how you can develop your sense of humor.
D.You might also do better at work
Listen to programs that amuse you. Read humorous books.”列出了三项可进行的活动,空处应是总结这些活动都能给人带来乐趣,所以C项“There’s a lot of fun out there”符合语境。故选C项。

C.There’s a lot of fun out there
因此,G项“A lot of times,we say things purely to please others”符合语境,引出后文的内容,其中please others 与后文的amuse our friends 相呼应。故选G项。

Instead, start with what amuses you. Then, if you think the other person will also be amused with it, share it with them.
G.A lot of times, we say things purely to please others
Think about Timing and Audience 根据前句“When you catch yourself trying to be funny...at 60%-70% of your usual rate.”

B.Pause in between sentences
所以,E项“Know When to Pull the Plug on Yourself”概括了本段主旨。故选E项。
