Guide the students to tell what the modal verbs in the passage have in common. *Students: Read the passage and underline all the modal verbs. List all the sentences with the modal verbs and tell what the modal verbs in the passage have in common. Purpose: To introduce the structure of perfect modals. Guided questions: 1. Now you have found all the modal verbs in the passage. What do they have in common? 2. What does “modal verb + have done” express? (To express sth in the past.) *Teacher: Ask the students to paraphrase the sentences with perfect modals. Then ask them to match each of the perfect modals with its meaning. *Students: Paraphrase the sentences to understand the meaning of each perfect modal. Then do the match work.
