When you take the subway, you might notice many people, old and young, listening to audiobooks instead of reading paper books. Audiobooks have become quite popular these days. Why are more and more people choosing audiobooks over traditional books? Is listening to an audiobook just as good as reading a paper book?
You need to find time available and a quiet place to sit down and read. However, you can listen to audiobooks anytime and anywhere you like, and it gives your eyes a break, too.
But the big question is, do we get as much knowledge from audiobooks as we do from paper books? Researchers did an experiment to find the answer. Volunteers in Group One were asked to listen to an audiobook while volunteers in Group Two read a book of the same content (内容). It turned out that they recalled as much information, whether they listened to or read it.
Another study from The Journal of Neuroscience further supported the result above. In the study, researchers scanned (扫描) people’s brains when they listened to and read books. The result showed that listening to audiobooks activated (激活) almost the same parts of the brain as reading did.
However, some people still believe that they learn better from reading paper books. One reason might be that when we listen to audiobooks, we are often doing some other tasks at the same time. “If you’re trying to learn while doing two things, you’ re not going to learn as well,” Daniel Willingham, a researcher at the University of Virginia, told The New York Times.
23. Why are more and more people choosing audiobooks over paper books?
A. They are easier to take.
B. They offer choices in content.
C. They improve people’s eyesight.
D. They free people in time and place.
24. What did researchers find in the study?
A. People recalled more information from reading paper books.
B. Listening activated different parts of the brain from reading.
C. People can read and listen to the same content at the same time.
D. Listening makes no difference in recalling information from reading.
25. What can we infer from the text?
A. People need to stay focused while reading.
B. People often do other tasks while listening.
C. People actually learn better from audiobooks.
D. People have to activate the brain to learn better.
26. How is the text organized? (①=Paragraph 1,②=Paragraph 2,…)
A. B. C. D.
D
Sounds from human activities spread across the ocean, causing much trouble to ocean animals. However, according to a new study, climate change might influence how sound travels through the water.
Human-caused climate change influences the ocean in many ways, such as changing its temperature, salt level, and acidity (酸度). For example, when the water becomes more acidic, it can’t take in certain sounds. So those sounds travel further, adding to the noise in some areas. However, this effect (影响) is not as big as other changes. Changes like temperature and salt level can affect how the ocean’s different layers (层) mix. That, in turn, affects how sound travels.
Researchers used computers to model how those changes influence noise levels across the ocean. They compared the models of the world now to those of the world in about 70 years if climate change continues. In the North Atlantic, they saw an increase in sound levels in the upper 125 meters of the Ocean.
This was caused mostly by ice melting (融化) from Greenland, forming a cold layer of water near the Ocean’s surface. When sound travels through water, it turns toward the coldest layer. This made sound waves get stuck in the cold top layer and spread further out across the water instead of traveling deeper. As a result, the sound became louder at this depth in the North Atlantic.
The rising noise levels in the Atlantic Ocean are worrying as they could disturb animals’ communication, hunting and travelling. Sharks already avoid loud ships, but with noise levels increasing everywhere, what will happen?
27. What has a bigger effect on ocean noise?
A. Sea level. B. Wind speed. C. Water temperature. D. Ocean acidity.
28. How did researchers carry out the study?
A. By modeling changes in ocean noise levels.
B. By finding areas with increasing ocean noise.
C. By doing field research in the North Atlantic.
D. By comparing today’s ice size to that of the future.
29. What do we know about the sound traveling through water?
A. It can be easily blocked by ice. B. It can get stuck by the seaside.
C. It goes towards the colder areas. D. It travels faster in the deep ocean.
30. What is the main idea of the text?
A. Ice melting brings changes to water level.
B. Some ocean animals keep away from ships.
C. The more the ocean is acidic, the more sounds it takes in.
D. Climate change may influence the way sounds travel in the ocean.

Whenever the alarm bell went off, he was always the first to get out, jump onto the fire-fighting truck, and rush to the fire.
On July 26, 2004, the fire station suddenly sounded an alarm bell at 10:15—a fire broke out in a factory. During this rescue, Xie Xiaohui got 75 percent burns all over his body. The local hospital did its best to save Xie’s life. To avoid infection (感染), some good skin (皮肤) was needed to put onto his body. After going through hundreds of operations in the following three years, he joined a cycling club in order to get well from the operations. Later, he set up a cycling team to spread fire safety knowledge by cycling around. His team trained nearly 5,500 people within three years as they tried to raise fire safety awareness (意识) among people.

25. What can we infer from the text?
A. People need to stay focused while reading.
B. People often do other tasks while listening.

A It can be easily blocked by ice. B. It can get stuck by the seaside.
C. It goes towards the colder areas. D. It travels faster in the deep ocean.
30 What is the main idea of the text?
A. Ice melting brings changes to water level.
B. Some ocean animals keep away from ships.
C. The more the ocean is acidic, the more sounds it takes in.
D. Climate change may influence the way sounds travel in the ocean.
