Unit 2 Grammar and usage Passive Voice What is it? It is a structure that serves to highlight the subject that performs the action. In other words, the person or object becomes the protagonist of the sentence and the one who performs the action. In an active voice sentence, a subject does an action that affects an object: The boy watches the stars My mon waters the flowers. What about the “Active voice? Difference Active Voice Sarah reads books everyday subject verb object ________ Passive Voice Books are read by Sarah everyday subject verb object ____________ English is spoken everywhere. (active: They speak English everywhere.) Presents are given at Christmas. (active: People give presents at Christmas.) My room is cleaned every Saturday. (active: I clean my room every Saturday.) Examples When we are NOT interested in who did a certain action When we do NOT know the person who performed the action We use the passive, when we are interested in WHAT happened or happens to people or objects. When do we use it? Magic formula!
