The writer ends with: “Now, whenever I hear of an acquaintance who has lost a loved one. I try to think of one specific task suiting that person’s need. And if the person says, ‘How did you know I needed that done?’ I reply, ‘it’s because a man once cleaned my shoes.’” Strange Encounter on Coho Creek by Morris Homer Erwin A miner spends days camping in the Alaskan wilderness, working hard to earn the trust of a mother wolf stuck in a trap before she and her four pups starve to death. Eventually, he is able to free her. Four years later, he encounters a wolf in the same meadow. Yes, the same wolf. I’ve Come to Clean Your Shoes. C. Strange Encounter on Coho Creek. D. How Honest Are We. 23. Where can the text be found? A. In a history book. B. In a magazine. C. In a novel. D. In a brochure. A 22. C 23. I’ve Come to Clean Your Shoes by Madge Harrah的最后一句话“if the person says, ‘How did you know I needed that done?’ I reply, it’s because a man once cleaned my shoes.’(如果这个人说,‘你怎么知道我需要做这件事?我回答说,“那是因为曾经有个人给我擦过鞋。”)”可知,这位擦鞋子的熟人做了力所能及的小事表达对已经失去亲人的朋友的关心。故选A。 Strange Encounter on Coho Creek by Morris Homer Erwin中的“When we shared this classic on rd. com in 2019, it went viral and it has now been read by many millions online and in print.( 2019年,当我们在rd. com分享这部经典作品时,它迅速传播开来,现在已经有数百万人在网上和印刷品上阅读了它。)” 根据第一段“Reader’s Digest has published some 35,000 articles in nearly 1,200 issues. ...These are some of our proudest moments.(《读者文摘》在近1200期刊物上发表了35000篇文章。......这些是最令人自豪的时刻章)”可知,这篇文章是读者杂志和分享已经发表过的故事。故选B。 B For Cruz, who grew up in Peru’s mountainous region of Cuzco, fog represents a massive opportunity. As a boy, he had to hike for more than an hour every day across rough hills to collect water from the nearest source. But over time, he realized that during the rainy season, drops of water would gather in the large leaves of banana trees. One day, he and his father built a canal system with the leaves to collect water. He moved to Lima at the age of 25. Shocked by the water shortages and expensive water supply that some of the city’s poorest residents were suffering, Cruz set up EI Movimiento Peruanos sin Agua in 2005. The idea was to deploy the method he learned in his hometown on a larger, better-adapted scale, which would provide free, independently sourced and easily accessible water to those who needed it most. He began installing (安装) a traditional fog catcher model developed in the 1980s. The nonprofit provided the materials for free, and the community built the infrastructure (基础设施) themselves. At the highest point of Los Tres Miradores, there is a curious set of large structures that is like a fleet of ships in the sky. They are so-called “fog catchers”. The 40 fog catchers there provide enough water for 180 families, whether to bathe, clean, drink (after being filtered at home) or to irrigate crops on small garden patches. Supporters believe that fog catchers have the potential to improve water supply for communities around the world amid ever-challenging conditions. German researcher Lummerich says, “They are cheap, easy to construct. In a world searching for water supply systems, it is one important approach that can make an essential difference locally. It could make the difference between having water and not having water available.” There are some issues, however. For one, fog catchers require space, which is not always easy to come by in cities. At the same time, fog catchers must be properly cleaned and maintained to stay effective. Most crucially, appropriate climate conditions are required. Fog isn’t everywhere. 24. Why did Cruz set up EI Movimiento Peruanos sin Agua in 2005? A. To raise money for the poorest residents. B. To construct the infrastructure for the city. C. To build a canal system for his hometown. D. To offer water to people who need it badly. 25. What does the underlined word “deploy” in paragraph 2 probably mean? A. Employ. B. Abandon. C. Design. D. Explore. 26. What is the problem with fog catchers in urban areas? A. High expenses. B. Public opposition. C. Technical faults. D. Space limitation. 27. Which of the following would be a suitable title for the text? A. A practical application of fog catchers in cities B. The development of a climate organization C. A creative method of improving water supply D. The importance of infrastructure construction 【答案】24. D 25. A 26. D 27. 根据第二段的“Shocked by the water shortages and expensive water supply that some of the city’s poorest residents were suffering, Cruz set up EI Movimiento Peruanos sin Agua in 2005.(一些城市最贫穷的居民正在遭受水资源短缺和昂贵的供水,Cruz对此感到震惊,于2005年成立了EI Movimiento Peruanos sin Agua。)” 根据画线词的上文“Shocked by the water shortages and expensive water supply that some of the city’s poorest residents were suffering, Cruz set up EI Movimiento Peruanos sin Agua in 2005. (一些城市最贫穷的居民面临着水资源短缺和昂贵的供水,Cruz感到震惊,于2005年成立了El Movimiento Peruanos sin Agua。)”和下文“He began installing (安装) a traditional fog catcher model developed in the 1980s. (他开始安装上世纪80年代开发的传统捕雾器模型。)”可知,此处讲述了Cruz产生该想法是因为被当地的水资源贫乏情况震惊,他有了想法后便着手解决该问题。由此可知,这种想法应该是将之前在家乡学到的收集水的方法“使用”到新的环境中,划线词意思应该是“使用”,与employ意思相近。故选A。 根据最后一段中“For one, fog catchers require space, which is not always easy to come by in cities. (首先,捕雾器需要空间,这在城市里并不容易找到。)”可知,在城市地区,捕雾器的问题是空间限制。故选D。 【27题详解】 主旨大意题。通读全文结合倒数第一段的“Supporters believe that fog catchers have the potential to improve water supply for communities around the world amid ever-challenging conditions. C。 C To adapt to climate change, some flowers are darkening their color to protect themselves from the sun’s radiation, new research shows. The study suggests that over the past 75 years the ultraviolet (UV) pigments (紫外线色素) in flowers have increased in response to rising temperatures and the thinning ozone layer (臭氧层). The flowers won’t look any different to humans, but insects consider the higher levels of UV pigments as a darker color, which could be confusing when they try to find out colorful flowers to land on. The UV-absorbing pigments in flowers work like sunscreen and protect sensitive cells from harmful radiation, Matthew Koski, a plant ecologist at Clemson University, says. He and his team hoped to determine if changes in pigments were a result of environmental change and if so, what are the plants responding to? The team collected dried, pressed plants across North America, Australia and Europe. In total, they studied 1, 238 samples from 42 different species dating back to 1941. Then, using a UV-sensitive camera, they photographed flower petals from each species. Next, they paired the photographs with the historic local temperature and ozone level data from the time the plant was picked to see how the pigment level changed over time. The researchers found that the changes in pigments differ between species, a result of the flowers’ structure. Flowers with open, exposed pollen had more UV-absorbing pigments when ozone levels were low and radiation was high. But flowers with pollen surrounded by the petal responded to temperatures, not ozone levels. As climate change continues to intensify, these changes in flowers’ color can affect plant-insect interactions. When the whole flowers get darker, insects might miss the flowers entirely. “This has a negative influence on plant reproduction,” Koski says. 28. What is the cause of flowers’ color changing according to the research? A. The impact of the climate crisis. B. The loss of natural habitats. C. The harm of nuclear radiation. D. The thickening of the ozone layer. 29. How did Koski’s team get their findings? A. By collecting photographs of flowers from different species. B. By analyzing how levels of UV pigments change over time. C. By collecting abundant samples from various species. D. By analyzing historic local temperature and ozone level data. 30. What can we learn about the change in pigments? A. It exists in flowers with exposed pollen only. B. It responds to temperatures and sea levels. C. It remains the same regardless of species. D. It varies depending on the flowers’ structure. 31. What is Koski’s attitude toward the change in flowers’ color? A. Concerned. B. Indifferent. C. Unclear. D. Optimistic. A 29. B 30. D 31. 根据第二段“The study suggests that over the past 75 years, the ultraviolet (UV) pigments (紫外线色素) in flowers have increased in response to rising temperatures and the thinning ozone layer (臭氧层).(研究表明,在过去的75年里,由于气温上升和臭氧层变薄,花朵中的紫外线色素增加了)”可知,花朵中的紫外线(UV)色素随着温度升高和臭氧层变薄而增加,这是花朵应对气候变化的策略,故选A。 根据第三段“Next, they paired the photographs with the historic local temperature and ozone level data from the time the plant was picked to see how the pigment level changed over time.(接下来,他们将这些照片与采摘植物时当地的历史温度和臭氧水平数据配对,看看色素水平是如何随时间变化的)”可知,科斯基的团队通过分析紫外线色素水平随时间的变化得到他们的发现。 根据第四段“The researchers found that the changes in pigments differ between species, a result of the flowers’ structure.(研究人员发现,由于花的结构不同,不同物种的色素变化也不同)”可知,色素沉着的变化因花的结构而异,故选D。 根据最后一段“When the whole flowers get darker, insects might miss the flowers entirely. “This has a negative influence on plant reproduction,” Koski says.(当整个花朵变暗时,昆虫可能会完全错过花朵。“这对植物繁殖有负面影响,”科斯基说)”可知,当整朵花变暗时,昆虫可能会完全错过花朵,这对植物的繁衍有消极的影响,说明Koski对此现象是担忧的,故选A。 第二节(共5小题;每小题2. 5分,满分12. 5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 How to Travel Sustainably in Puerto Rico From small, farm-sourced restaurant menus to guesthouse stays, community tours and Puerto Rican cultural workshops, Puerto Rico is strengthening its sustainable tourism scene. ____32____ Food trip in Old San Juan. These are some of our proudest moments. How to Keep Young Mentally by Mary B. Mullett This first article in the first issue highlighted inventor Alexander Graham Bell and his belief in lifelong learning: “The first essential of any real education is to observe. Observe! Remember! Compare!” It was an appropriate beginning. reflecting our self-educated founder’s endless curiosity. I’ve Come to Clean Your Shoes by Madge Harrah The morning of a family funeral, an acquaintance shows up unannounced and says, “I’ve come to clean your shoes.” He spends the day quietly shining every pair in the house. When we shared this classic on rd.com in 2019, it went viral and it has now been read by many millions online and in print. How Honest Are We by Ralph Kinney Bennett Our famous “wallet drop” set up the ultimate test of honesty: If we left wallets in cities around the country, how many would be returned? B For Cruz, who grew up in Peru’s mountainous region of Cuzco, fog represents a massive opportunity. Shocked by the water shortages and expensive water supply that some of the city’s poorest residents were suffering Cruz set up EI Movimiento Peruanos sin Agua in 2005. A. Employ. B. Abandon. C. Design. D. Explore. 26 What is the problem with fog catchers in urban areas? A. High expenses. B. Public opposition. C. Technical faults. D. Space limitation. 27. Which of the following would be a suitable title for the text? A. A practical application of fog catchers in cities B. The development of a climate organization C. A creative method of improving water supply D. The importance of infrastructure construction C To adapt to climate change, some flowers are darkening their color to protect themselves from the sun’s radiation, new research shows. The study suggests that over the past 75 years, the ultraviolet (UV) pigments (紫外线色素) in flowers have increased in response to rising temperatures and the thinning ozone layer (臭氧层). C. Unclear. D. Optimistic. How to Travel Sustainably in Puerto Rico From small, farm-sourced restaurant menus to guesthouse stays, community tours and Puerto Rican cultural workshops, Puerto Rico is strengthening its sustainable tourism scene. ____32____ Food trip in Old San Juan. Every autumn the two families would go together on a trip to the Rocky Mountains. This year, under the guidance of park workers, they camped on the hillside. After putting up the tents (帐篷), the two boys announced to climb Cathedral Mountain nearby on their own next morning and promised their parents to return before dark Early the following day, the friends set off with a bag packed with food and water. Along the winding path, they admired a sea of colourful leaves spreading beneath their feet. As they got near to the top, the path was rocky and less-traveled. After three hours, they reached the top and enjoyed the beautiful view from the mountaintop. Lost in the breathtaking scenery, they felt refreshed from tiredness. How worthwhile the trip was Having got enough rest, Leo and Jim decided to climb down. Suddenly, trouble began. On one very dangerous part of the mountain, Jim fell three metres off the side of the path. Leo climbed down to where Jim was and found him badly injured and not able to move “Help!” Leo shouted. NO REPLY. “Help! Help!” Leo almost cried. But still no replies. “If only I had brought my mobile phone in the bag,” Leo thought, regretful and sad. Taking a deep breath, he tried to calm himself down. Then he noticed Jim was bleeding. So he cleaned the dirt and blood from Jim’s face and hands, and then tried to help Jim stand up, but Jim’s right leg was hurting too much. They had to wait and hope that help would come. While they waited for help, Leo gave Jim his food and water and let him lie on his jacket. Leo used an extra shirt to keep Jim warm and they rested together against a rock. However, as darkness started to fall, the weather turned cold and windy and help still didn’t arrive. Feeling low Jim told Leo to leave him alone and go back himself. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Seeing this, Jim asked Leo to leave him alone again. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
