The Alternative Learning Center in Dubuque, Iowa is letting students earn PE credits (学分) by helping the elderly and disabled in their community do outside chores. ALC teacher Tim Hitzler said that he and his students raked leaves, pulled weeds, cut grass, cleaned gutters. They were game for just about any other tasks needed to help people in need—they’ve even cleaned out a chicken coop! “The students aren’t typically too excited at the beginning. But once they start doing the yard work, they become more motivated (有积极性的). What they really like is helping people. They really like giving back to people and meeting the person,” said Hitzler. According to the local news, students can choose from different activities during the last two weeks of school that will count towards their PE credits. And volunteering to do yard work is just one of the tasks. “Every student has felt a sense of pride from helping those that need it.
