It was getting dark and it was snowing heavily when Scrooge moved along the street with the ghost.
When they arrived at a door, they heard a laugh. It was a great surprise to Scrooge to recognize (辨别出) the laugh from his own nephew (侄子) Fred.
They entered. About twenty people sat and talked happily. They couldn’t see Scrooge and the ghost.
“Ha, ha, ha!” cried Fred, “My uncle said that Christmas was a trick! And he believed it, too!”
“Shame for him, Fred!” said Mary, Fred’s nice wife, angrily.
“He’s a funny old fellow,” said Fred, “He’s rich, but his wealth (财富) is of no use to him. He doesn’t do any good with it. And I have nothing to say against him.”
After that, they began to play a game. All the people did it happily, young and old, and so did Scrooge. He was really enjoying himself. He even forgot that they couldn’t see or hear him.
The ghost was pleased to find Scrooge in this mood, and Scrooge didn’t want to leave.
“Here is another game,” said Scrooge. “Allow me to stay one half hour, Spirit, only one half hour.”
That was a game called “Yes and No” — When someone thought of something, the rest must find out what it was by getting the answer “yes” or “no”.
It was Fred’s turn. He laughed and laughed. At last, his wife Mary cried out, “I have found it out! It’s your Uncle Scro-o-o-o-oge!”
“Certainly it is! He has given us plenty of merriment (欢笑), I am sure,” said Fred, “Here is a glass of wine ready to our hand now, and I say, ‘Uncle Scrooge!’”
“Well! Uncle Scrooge!” they cried.
“A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to the old man, whatever he is!” said Fred.
Uncle Scrooge imperceptibly (难以察觉地) became so happy and light of heart. If the ghost had given him time, he would like to say, “______” But the whole scene passed off in the breath of the last word spoken by his nephew.
——From A Christmas Carol
19. When did the story happen?
A. In the morning. B. At noon. C. In the evening.

21. How many games did they play?
A. One. B. Two. C. Three.

How do you feel when your teacher asks you to work on a group project with other students? Do you like to work together with others or work alone?
The Programme for International Student Assessment, or PISA, carried out a survey of students’ ability to work together in groups. They found that students who did well on tests by themselves were also likely to be better at working with other people. This finding was true for many countries. Students in Japan, South Korea, Finland and Canada, where test scores were high, also did well in working together to solve problems.
But this was not the case for every country. Chinese students, who had high scores as well, displayed just average collaborative (合作) skills. “One reason might be that Chinese parents and teachers focus too much on grades,” said Zhao Zhongxin, former vice president of the Chinese Family Education Association. “Students have a lot of exam pressure and they see schools as places for competition.” “However, collaborative skills are very important for preparing students for today’s society,” he added. “Luckily, more Chinese parents and teachers are realizing the importance of this and are thinking of ways to help students improve this skill.”
Another interesting finding from the PISA survey was that girls could be better than boys at working together. They said girls showed more positive attitudes (态度) towards relationships, which meant they were more willing to listen to others’ opinions.
PISA also found that the classroom environment could influence how well students collaborated. In classes where there are a lot of activities that require communication, such as class debates (辩论), students might have better attitudes towards collaborating.

Last year, the learning difficulties clinic (门诊部) at the Children’s Hospital of Fudan University in Shanghai caught people’s attention.
A parent noticed it and posted its photo on the Internet. The photo soon led to a heated discussion among people.
In fact, the learning difficulties clinic has been open since September 2020 in the hospital. A doctor said, “We are receiving a growing number of cases of poor relationships between parents and children. Most of them have to do with children’s schoolwork.”
“If there had been such a clinic during my childhood, I would not be making a living by driving a taxi now.”
—Lin Hua
“I’ve tried really hard but still can’t do well in math. I’d better go to the clinic to get help.”
—Li Jia
Most parents think that their children’s laziness is the cause of their poor grades. They seldom realize that their children may have learning disabilities. Learning disabilities can be hard to identify (鉴别), but there are some signs of them.
●Late in talking
Many one-year-olds can say a few words quite clearly. If a child can’t say simple words like “Mom” and “No” when he or she is over two years old, it is time to see a doctor.
●Poor handwriting
Children with learning disabilities may have trouble writing down their thoughts, spelling words correctly or using proper grammar.
●______
Commonly, people have better memories when they are young. If it’s difficult for a child to remember what he or she just reads or hears, the parents should be aware (警觉的) of the risk.
Facing these problems, parents need to identify and treat (治疗) them early. Many children have improved a lot in their studies with right treatments.

A parent noticed it and posted its photo on the Internet. The photo soon led to a heated discussion among people.
