That􀆳s longer than the time many of those students spend sleeping. In fact, such extended cellphone use shows that technology could become an addiction, according to a new study. An addiction is a type of uncontrolled and unhealthy habit. It􀆳s well⁃known that people can become addicted to drugs, such as alcohol and the nicotine in cigarettes. What􀆳s not so well⁃known: “People can be addicted to behaviours,” says James Roberts, a marketing professor at Baylor University in Waco, Texas. Certain people use smart phones to lift their moods. And it may take more and more time on those phones to provide the same level of enjoyment. For such people, losing a phone or having its battery die could cause anxiety or panic. Roberts says the new study􀆳s results point to the types of rewards each gender (性别) might seek from cellphone use. For example, “ men use technology—cellphones in particular—more for entertainment and information,” Roberts notes. “ Women use the phone more for keeping and developing social relationships,” he says. But simply that people used their phones a lot does not mean they were addicted. Tracii Ryan is a psychologist at RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia. “Withdrawal (脱瘾期) and overuse are certainly two acceptable symptoms(症状) of addiction,” she notes. But, she adds, “They are not the only two that would be required for a diagnosis(诊断). ” Roberts agrees. Ryan makes a similar point about studies on Facebook addiction. “Researchers have not always measured Facebook addiction using all of the accepted symptoms of addiction,” she says. “ More research is needed. ” Yet Ryan􀆳s report offers a deeper understanding of the main reasons why people use Facebook. Some want to interact with friends. Some want to pass time. Some want entertainment. And some people seek companionship. “Any one of these motivations might cause a lift in mood, which then leads to Facebook addiction,” Ryan says. Someone might turn to Facebook to relieve loneliness, for example. But that person might use the site so much that it causes problems. Remember, the researchers say, technology helps when it􀆳s a tool—not when it is an unhealthy addiction. 75 1. What is cellphone addiction? A. People suffer without using cellphones. B. B “New technologies such as artificial intelligence, cloud computing and 5G have become a force to be taken into consideration. Companies are under pressure to use these technologies in their operations in order to realise growth, giving rise to an increase in demand for privacy ( 隐私) and data protection,” said Ramesh Moosa, cybersecurity (网络安全), privacy and forensics partner of PwC China. Chinese companies are experiencing digital transformation (转换) at a rapid pace in an effort to improve the speed and efficiency of their operations. This is causing a rise in the cybersecurity and data privacy risks they face, thus making it more challenging to build digital trust. Lisa Li said that technology companies are leading the new digital trend in China, but some traditional companies find themselves uncertain about meeting their digital transformation goals. “The key point is to connect cybersecurity programs with business development goals, so as to build digital trust together,” Li said. The study which interviewed 121 Chinese executives shows that the risk management is not yet fully developed. In terms of the ability of organisations to manage risks from digital transformation, 24 percent of Chinese executives and IT professionals believed that they are very effective at doing so, 7 percent lower than the global average level. In addition, 55 percent of Chinese interviewees are less optimistic (乐观的) and feel they are only somewhat effective at managing these risks, compared with 40 percent of the global average rate. Li Aidong finally stressed more efforts will be needed to promote the development of the cybersecurity industry, and defend against the risks and challenges posed by new technologies and applications. 5.
