One of the rising trends in the UK food culture is vegetarianism. How far this has been influenced
by recent food safety problems is impossible to say. What is certain, however, is that more people are
cutting out meat and animal products from their diet.
A survey conducted in 2001 revealed that 5.7% of the population were vegetarian. In numbers this
means there are over 3 million vegetarians in the UK today and vegetarianism (where you dont eat
meat) and veganism (where you dont consume any animal products) are becoming more and more
common in the UK culture. Part of this is due to food safety problems, but social changes, and the fact
that the range of vegetarian food available is so wide, have also played a part.
2)
Many people choose not to eat meat or animal products for reasons regarding the treatment and
killing of animals for food and the effects of meat and fish production on the environment. Recent food
safety problems such as BSE ( or “mad cow disease”) have also caused many to stop eating meat.
Others choose to change their diet in this way for reasons of health. According to the Vegetarian Society,
a vegetarian diet could help reduce the risk from certain cancers and the possibility of heart disease as
well as various other health problems such as obesity (肥胖) and high blood pressure.
3)
Another rising trend in the UK food culture is to do with how our food is produced. One of the main
44
characteristics of organic farming is that the use of artificial chemical pesticides and fertilisers (肥料)
is limited. Instead, organic farmers rely on developing a healthy soil and growing a mixture of crops.
Organic farming isnt only concerned with plant crops, but animals can also be raised organically
without the use of antibiotics (抗生素) commonly used in ordinary animal farming.
4)
According to the Soil Association, the UKs leading organisation for organic food and farming,
three out of every four families in the UK now buy organic food. Some people buy organic meat,
fruit and vegetables from farmers markets or stores that deliver a box of mixed fruit and vegetables
to their homes each week. Most people, though, probably buy organic products in their local
supermarket as diverse foods are available there, including fruit, veg, rice pudding, chocolate and
baked beans.
1. Skim the passage and choose a title for each of the four parts.

2) reveal B. to discover and show
3) vegetarianism C. a diet including no meat or fish
4) consume D. made up of a wide variety of things
5) artificial E. to eat or drink
6) diverse F. a change or development toward sth. new or different
3. Analyse the structure of the following sentences and translate them into Chinese with the help of a
dictionary.
1) What is certain, however, is that more people are cutting out meat and animal products from their
diet.
2) Part of this is due to food safety problems, but social changes, and the fact that the range of
vegetarian food available is so wide, have also played a part.

mouth will become part of you. Many experts use 2) to warn people its important to form a good
64
eating habit. For example, too much sweet food makes a person gain weight and kids are often told
3) keep off sweet food. Parents are really upset because children just cant have their mouths shut
when provided with a variety of candies. However, a team of American scientists have revealed
something new about eating sweet food.
“When we say some people ‘sweet’, we mean they are kind and friendly to us. Perhaps this can
help us learn more about peoples emotions and acts.” said Brian Meier, 4) scientist from the
study team. “Taste is something we experience every day. 5) we have done is to find whether we
can know someones character and behaviour depending 6) their taste.”
In one of their experiments, college students were surveyed about their character—whether, for
example, they were soft⁃hearted or not. Then researchers get them to make a list of their favourite food.
According to their answers, the scientists found that the students who liked sweet food were nicer.
In another experiment, the scientists found that people who preferred sweet food such as cookies
and chocolate were more willing to help other people in need, and those who ate non⁃sweet food such as
chips werent. For example, people with a sweet tooth were more likely to volunteer to clean up their
city, help the disabled and so on.
The result of the experiments is that peoples helpfulness or being nice may have something to do
with their taste for sweet food. So next time when you hear a kid crying for sweet food, dont make quick
judgment.

You are what you eat and fats are a main food for Asias fast⁃food generation. Dr. Chwang, director
of the Department of Food Nutrition, says children are consuming more meat and soft drinks. That is a
thorough change from the traditional diet of vegetables and rice and little meat. “They like big pieces of
fried meat with a soft drink. So although they may eat the same amount of food, their calorie intake (卡
路里摄入量) has increased. Now 40 to 45 percent of their calories come from fat,” says Chwang.
Although on the whole Asians tend to be thin, culture is a reason for the fatness of todays
generation, according to Chwang. “ Asian people love food,” she says. “ Eating and drinking are
important social and family functions.” In the past, however, big meals were only hosted on special
occasions, as people were more careful with money. In todays climate of wealth and remarkable
consumption,10⁃course meals are no longer reserved for significant occasions.
“In the past, people had four or more children—now, they have one or two, so they tend to spoil
them,” says Chwang. “The easiest way is to give them quality food. Parents think feeding them well is
showing their love. They feel bad when their children look thin.”
When describing the physical condition of most overweight Asian children, Chwang says, “There
is a clear relation between fatness and indoor play. Children get fat because they dont move, and
eventually, they dont want to move because they are fat.”
Thanks to technology, a growing army of children prefer video games to old outdoor sports. “What
do children do when watching TV or sitting in front of the computer playing video games? They eat
chocolate and drink Coke,”says Chwang.

the elements. In hot climates, clothing provides protection from sunburn or wind damage, while in cold climates
its power of protecting against cold is more important. Shelter usually reduces the functional need for clothing.
Similarly, clothing has seasonal and regional aspects, so that thinner materials and fewer layers of clothing
are generally worn in warmer seasons and regions than in colder ones.
Clothing performs a range of social and cultural functions, such as individual, occupational and sexual
difference, and social status. In many societies, standards of social behaviour about clothing reflect standards
of modesty, religion, gender, and social status. Clothing may also function as a form of decoration and an
expression of personal taste or style.
Some clothing protects from specific environmental dangers, such as insects, poisonous chemicals,
weather, weapons, and contact with rough substances. On the contrary, clothing may protect the environment
from the clothing wearer, as with doctors wearing medical uniforms.

Script:
Hello, everyone! I am Tom, a food expert from FDA. I feel greatly honoured to have this chance to speak
to you. Today I am going to talk about what a balanced diet is and how to write a meal plan.
In no particular order, a balanced diet must contain a combination of carbohydrates, proteins, fats,
vitamins, minerals, and fiber in suitable amounts to maintain good health. Each of these items plays a
particular, yet important, role in helping the body to function properly.
Eating a balanced diet gives your body all the nutrients it needs from a wide variety of different foods. If
you have a busy life, you might find it difficult to maintain a healthy diet. However, its simple for even the
busiest person to eat a balanced diet with just some planning and effort! You can start by writing a meal plan.
Writing out a weekly meal plan can help you make sure youre consuming a well⁃balanced diet. Plan
meals and snacks to have throughout the day so that youll be eating each food group everyday. First, take an
hour or two of your free time and write up your ideas for all meals and snacks. Next, try working out all the
food groups for each daily meal plan. Did you include dairy each day? How about enough fruits or vegetables?
Besides, if youre busy or on the go, plan for meals that are quick and require little cooking, or for recipes that
you can freeze for easy⁃to⁃prepare meals. Finally, search online for sample meal plans and inspiration if
necessary.
