Building Trust in a Relationship Again
Trust is a learned behaviour that we gain from past experiences. It is putting confidence in
someone. Trust is a risk. But you cant be successful when theres a lack of trust in a relationship that
results from an action where the wrongdoer takes no responsibility for the misfortune he brought to
others.
Unfortunately, weve all been victims (受害者) of betrayal (背叛). Whether weve been stolen
from, lied to, misled, or cheated on, there are different levels of losing trust. Sometimes people simply
cant trust anymore since they have been so badly hurt that they are scared of letting it happen again. Its
understandable, but if youre willing to forgive and forget and build trust in a relationship again, we have
some steps you can take to get you there.
• You should learn to
Having confidence in yourself will help you make better choices because you can see what the best
outcome would be for your well⁃being.
• You should stop regarding yourself as a victim
If youve been betrayed, you are the victim of your circumstance. But theres a difference between
being a victim and living with a “victim mentality” . At some point in all of our lives, well have our
trust tested. It is unwise to always look on yourself as a victim.
• You should believe not everything is lost
Once trust is lost, what is left? Instead of looking at the situation from this hopeless angle, look at
everything you still have and be thankful for all of the good in your life. Seeing the positive (积极的)
side of things doesnt mean you are ignoring what happened. Instead, its a healthy way to work through
the experience to allow room for positive growth and forgiveness.

Talking about Past Experiences
Good evening, everyone!
My name is Sally. I feel very 1 to have this chance to share my experiences as a volunteer
with all of you.
Some people think what you do in your spare time is your own affair. Some argue that we must do
something profitable. For me, I really recommend that we do something both meaningful and fun. That
is, volunteering.
Volunteering provides so many opportunities to 2 and share great stories. I have had plenty of
adventures as a volunteer. I once organised a concert for charity with my friends at our university. It was
really fun finding bands and 3 funds for a cause we believed in. I also volunteered at a charity
sports event where the organisers gave me cupcakes from an expensive London bakery to thank me for
my 4 . Last summer holiday, I volunteered in a charity shop so I found loads of nice cheap clothes
to 5 my wardrobe.
My most unforgettable experience as a volunteer, however, was 6 in France. I had to admit
that it was a quite new experience for me. It was basically a free holiday as food and accommodation
were provided. It was not your typical holiday though, since I had to look after 15 horses and sleep at
the top of a tower in an odd castle! I soon discovered that I was an awful farmer but it did not matter
because I made some great friends and also 7 .
While this is all fun, my favourite aspect of volunteering is creating and sharing stories. My terrible
attempts at farming have given me extremely funny stories to tell! Talking to volunteers from different
countries and 8 has also helped me learn more about the world.
Thank you for listening.

A
I think it was my mother who taught me the meaning of honesty. Not because she actually was
honest, but because she lied all the time. She felt that the easiest way out of any given situation was
generally the best way out. And, for her, that generally meant telling a “ little white lie” . As a young
child I thought it was kind of cool. And, naturally, when I would come to her with a question wondering
what I should do, she generally advised me to lie.
“Mom, I told Theresa that I would go over to her house, but now I would rather go to Sues house
to play.” “Tell Theresa youre sick,” she would advise. And generally I did. But I didnt seem blessed
with her lack of conscience (愧疚). On many painful occasions Theresa would find out that I really
went to Sues house without her. These occasions taught me that it is more painful to be caught in a lie
than it is to tell the truth in the first place. I wondered how it was possible that my mother had never
learned that lesson.
I started thinking of all the lies that Id heard her tell. I remembered the time she told someone that
her favourite restaurant had closed, because she didnt want to see it there anymore. Or the time she
told Dad that she loved the lawn⁃mower he gave her for her birthday. Or when she said that our phone
lines had been down when she was trying to explain why she hadnt been in touch with a friend of hers
for weeks. And what bothered me even more were all the times she had involved me into her lies. Like
12
the time she told my teacher that I had to miss school for surgery, when she really needed me to
babysit. And it even started to bother me when someone would call for her and she would ask me to tell
them that she wasnt there.
So, I started my own personal fight against her dishonesty. When I answered the phone and it was
someone my mother didnt want to talk to, I said, “Louise, mom is here, but she doesnt want to talk to
you.” The first time I did it, she punished me, but I refused to apologise. I told her that I had decided
that it was wrong to lie. And the next time it happened I did the same thing. Finally, she approached
me and said, “I agree that lying is not the best thing to do, but we need to find a way to be honest
without being rude.” She admitted that her methods werent right, and I admitted that mine were a bit
too extreme.
Over the past few years, the two of us have worked together to be honest—and yet kind. Honesty
should mean more than not lying. It should mean speaking the truth in kindness. Though I started by
trying to teach my mom the importance of honesty, I ended up gaining a deeper understanding of the
meaning of the term.
1. What did the authors mother probably agree with in the past?
A. To be honest is very important in life.
B. The easiest way is not necessarily the best way out.
C. A white lie always saves a lot of trouble.
D. It is cool not to tell the truth when refusing others.
2. What do the underlined words “that lesson” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A. I would rather go to Sues house instead of Theresas house to play.
B. Being caught in a lie is more suffering than telling the truth directly.
C. I was not like her to be free of conscience when telling a white lie.
D. What bothered me a lot was when she even involved me into her lies.
3. Which of the following can best describe the authors mother?
A. Honest.
B. Hardworking.
C. Humourous.
D. Realistic.
4. Which opinion did the author and her mother finally share?
A. Kindheartedness is even more important than honesty.
B. Creating good excuses are the key to telling a white lie.
C. Truthfulness and kindness are necessary for being honest.
D. Honesty can solve all the problems in human relations.

Chinese poet Qu Yuan of the Warring States Period. He was a good and respected man, but because of the
misdeeds of jealous rivals he eventually fell into disfavour in the emperors court. Unable to regain the respect of
the emperor, in his sorrow Qu Yuan jumped into the Miluo River to commit suicide. The local people boated to
search for him while throwing rice into the river to feed the fishes, hoping that the fishes dont harm the body of
Qu Yuan. Although they were unable to find Qu Yuan, the custom has been preserved to commemorate Qu Yuan.
Nowadays, there are many interesting activities in the Dragon Boat Festival, such as making zongzi,
racing dragon boats and hanging the Chinese mugwort leaf.

2. predict
3. to stop comparing yourself with others
4. admit your mistakes
Script:
No one likes lies. But, unfortunately, being dishonest with others is sometimes easier than telling the truth.
And today we will discuss how to be honest with others. First, figure out why you lie and who you lie to. Weve
all lied at one time or another for different reasons. But coming up with a systematic plan for becoming more
honest will be difficult unless you try to find those reasons by yourself. Second, anticipate behaviours that will
make you feel guilty. To avoid lying, its important to learn to predict things that youll likely to feel guilty
about in the future and avoid those behaviours. You can either get comfortable with the truth, or abandon the
behaviour that makes you embarrassed. The third suggestion is to stop comparing yourself with others.
Sometimes we lie to make ourselves seem bigger and better than we really are. If you stop feeling competitive
with others and give yourself the value you deserve, you wont feel the urge to lie to bring yourself up, because
youre already up. Finally, accept the results and decide to face them. Sometimes, its better to admit your
mistakes rather than continue pretending its not your fault. Speaking out the truth can be relieved and
extremely healthy. Even if there will be some consequences at the end of the admission, itll also be a peaceful
mind that you deserve.
