What Good Language Learners Do
Theres no such thing as being born good at languages. However, there are people who learn languages
well. But that has nothing to do with them being naturally good at it. It has something to do with their attitude
and the way they approach their learning.
1) Good language learners .
Good language learners are willing to face the fear of making mistakes. They experiment and take risks.
For example, they try out different ways of learning vocabulary until finding the way that suits them best.
They are not afraid of making mistakes because they know that with every mistake, they gain a small victory
towards improving their language.
2) Good language learners .
It may not be easy at first, but thinking in English is worth cultivating as an important skill that will
improve all areas of your language learning. To help you think in English, carry on a dialogue with yourself
in English when walking alone, sitting on a bus, or taking a break from other studies. Use English whenever
and wherever you can.
3) Good language learners .
Good language learners know that it takes time and effort to become skillful, and that there will be
periods where progress seems very slow. They are realistic in setting learning goals. They are able to assess
their own strengths and weaknesses. If their learning method isnt working, then they find a better method.
4) Good language learners .
Good language learners have a good attitude towards the culture where the language is spoken. They
know that learning a language means learning the culture as well. They learn the customs of nonverbal
behaviour and the important values of the culture. They learn how to behave in stores and restaurants, how to
behave with strangers, and how to behave in society. They learn about the culture; for example, they learn
31
that “How are you?” is a greeting in English, not a real question. A good language learner knows that
language and culture are two sides of the same coin.

Learning language is natural and babies are born with the ability to learn it. All children, no matter
which language their parents speak, learn a language in the same way. There are three basic stages in
which children develop their language skills.
Stage One: Learning Sounds
When babies are born, they can make and hear all the sounds in all the languages in the world.
Thats about 150 in about 6,500 languages, though no language uses all of those sounds. In
this stage, babies learn which sounds belong the language they are learning and which dont.
The ability to recognise and produce those sounds is called “ phonemic awareness”, is
important for children to learn to read.
Stage Two: Learning Words
At this stage, children learn how the sounds in a language go together to make meaning. For
example, they learn that the sounds “m⁃ah⁃m⁃ee” refer to the “being” who feeds and takes care of
them, their mommy.
This is a significant step because everything we say is really just a stream of sounds. To make sense
of those sounds, a child must be able to recognise where one ends and another one begins.
These are called “word boundaries”.
51
Stage Three: Learning Sentences
During this stage, children learn how to create sentences. That means they can put words in the
correct . For example, they learn that in English we say “ I want a cookie” and “ I want a
chocolate cookie”, not “Want I a cookie” or “I want cookie chocolate”.
Children also learn the between grammatical correctness and meaning. Noam Chomsky
created an example of this difference in the sentence “Colourless green ideas sleep furiously”. Children
will know that the sentence is grammatically correct, it doesnt make sense. They know that
green is a colour and cant, therefore, be colourless.

One of the greatest contributions to the first Oxford English Dictionary was also one of its most
unusual. In 1879, Oxford University in England asked Prof. James Murray to serve as the editor for
what was to be the greatest dictionary in the history of the English language. It would include every
English word possible and would give not only the definition but also the history of the word and
quotations (引文) showing how it was used.
This was a huge task. So Murray had to find volunteers from Britain, the United States, and other
English speaking areas to search every newspaper, magazine, and book written in English. Hundreds of
volunteers responded, including William Chester Minor. Dr. Minor was an American doctor who had
served in the Civil War and was now living in England. He gave his address as “ Broadmoor,
Crowthorne, Berkshire”, 50 miles from Oxford.
Minor joined the volunteers sending words and quotations to Murray. Over the next years, he
became one of the staff s most valued contributors (投稿者). But he was also a mystery. Although he
received many invitations, he always refused to visit Oxford. So in 1897, Murray finally decided to
travel to Crowthorne himself. When he arrived, he found Minor locked in a book⁃lined cell at the
Broadmoor Asylum (收容所) for the mental health patient.
Murray and Minor became friends, sharing their love of words. Minor continued contributing to the
dictionary, sending in more than 10,000 words and quotations in 20 years. Murray continued to visit
Minor regularly, sometimes taking walks with him around the asylum grounds.
In 1910, Minor left Broadmoor for an asylum in America. Minor died in 1920, seven years before
the first edition of the Oxford English Dictionary was completed. The 12 volumes defined 414,825

A Real Friend
A real friend is one who walks in when the rest of the world walks out.
Someone that will not betray you.
Laugh with you when you are happy.
Lend you a shoulder to cry on when you are sad.
Never desert your friend at the time when he / she needs a friend the most.
Treasure every friendship now.
It takes one second to see a person.
It takes one minute to introduce each other.
It takes one month to know each other.
It takes one year or more to understand each other.
But it takes one lifetime to be a real friend.
My contribution.

its another talking to a native speaker. But with the right methods and hard work, you can get over the
problem.
Firstly, record yourself. When youre by yourself, you have no reason to be nervous. You can record
your own voice! Youll be able to actually hear yourself and be able to notice the mistakes you make.
Secondly, read aloud. If you dont have a recording machine, simply read aloud—every day for at least 15 or
20 minutes. Youll get used to speaking for longer periods of time and youll come across words you can add
to your vocabulary. Its best to choose books with lots of dialogues. The language is generally more real and a
bit simpler; after all, dialogue is conversation and conversations are a much more practical skill. Thirdly,
listen to MP3s and the news. We live in an information age. Though you think you dont have native speakers
around, you actually do. Scientific American, CBC, BBC and Australias ABC Radio are great MP3s to get
started with. And the best part is that the people from radio stations generally speak clearly and have pretty
good pronunciation. In addition, you could also try to watch movies and TV programs in English.

If you have decided to learn English, you can easily find yourself in a common situation for language
learners: losing your self⁃confidence. You go to classes, you do all your homework and sometimes even do
some extra exercises, but you still feel bad at English. Here are five pieces of fantastic advice that will
provide you some solutions to this problem.
①Think it over and change.
If you stay at a certain level without any improvement, something needs to be changed. You might have
to find new methods, change to a different group, study abroad or use new textbooks. You can also go to your
teacher to talk about your problems.
②Study texts by heart.
It sounds boring and most of us hated this when we had to remember a passage by heart at the
elementary school. But memorising shorter texts, common phrases or longer example sentences can give you
more confidence.
39
③Speak and forget your mistakes.
It is natural for you to wish to express yourself correctly, but at the beginning you should forget the
dream of speaking perfectly. Try to forget this desire and just enjoy that you can express yourself in English
no matter how poorly you speak.
④Success is success.
Remember your successes and dont forget to praise yourself. After bigger tests, exams or projects, take
a short break and relax. Studying doesnt always mean hard work.
