八年级上 阅读写作周周练 Unit 7 (B) Many great inventions(发明) make our everyday life easier and better. Adaptive glasses Do you have the experience that you still can't see clearly although you wear glasses and you have to change another pair? In 1985, Joshua Silver, a teacher at Oxford University invented a pair of glasses that could be changed by the wearer? He used two plastic lenses(透镜) and put a kind of special water in it. People can use syringes(注射器) to change the water between the two lenses in order to see clearly. The glasses are not beautiful but easy to use and cheap to make. The wind-up radio(发条收音机) Trevor Baylis wanted to make a cheap radio so that even poor people could use it. Then he invented one. The radio has a generator(发电机) that is powered by turning a handle. It won the BBC Design Award for Best Product and Best Design in 1996. The Dyson vacuum cleaner(真空吸尘器) In many homes you can see a vacuum cleaner that looks like a spaceship. This is Dyson vacuum cleaner. You do not need a bag for the cleaner and it doesn't get blocked(被阻塞) so it is very practical. The idea came to Sir James Dyson after he kept having problems with his vacuum cleaner. He decided to invent a better one. The Dyson cleaner is now one of the best-selling vacuums around the world. This 17-year-old girl from the US is going to join NASA's 2033 project to go to Mars(火星).2. At the age of 3, Carson heard from her father that humans once landed on the moon but not Mars.3. It is 0.58 m tall and it started to work in the bank four years ago. It has done a good job in the past four years, so more robots will appear in other banks in the coming months. The 5.4-kg robot was "born” in Paris in 2006. It is able to speak 19 languages. He can talk with people and ask them what service they need. "Hello and welcome,”Nao said."I can tell you about money exchange(兑换),ATMs, opening a bank account(账户).Which one would you like?" In fact, robots are not only used in banks. In Henn-na Hotel in Nagasaki, the workers are almost all robots. At the front desk, there are two robots. One looks like a human in shape. It speaks Japanese. The other one looks like a dinosaur, which speaks English. They help people check in(登记入住). In each room you can also see a small robot that can answer some simple questions and do some easy jobs for people, such as turning the lights on or off. In the future, more and more robots will work for us. The manager(经理) of the bank said they planned to use Nao to welcome foreign visitors during the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
