Do you like wearing jeans? But do you know who invented them and why they are popular? Now I’ll tell you something about them.
There was a man named Levi Strauss. He invented jeans. He was born in Germany in 1829, but he went to the USA in 1847. At first he lived in New York, but in 1853 he moved to San Francisco to work with his brother. They worked in a shop selling clothes to men who were looking for gold during the California Gold Rush. The men were working very hard in difficult conditions, and they needed very strong trousers.
Strauss was the first man to begin producing special, strong trousers for working men. He made these trousers from a special material called “denim (蓝粗棉布)” — a kind of material that probably came from a town called Nimes in France. Many people now think the English word “denim” comes from the French words “de Nimes”, which means “from Nimes”. Later, in the 1960s, Strauss added special metal buttons (纽扣) to the trousers to make them even better and they quickly became very popular. Strauss and his brother made a lot of money.
In the early part of the 20th century, only working men wore denim trousers in workplaces like factories. But after the Second World War, teenage boys and young men at college started wearing them as daily clothes outside the workplace and jeans became quite popular. At that time, jeans were usually flared (喇叭形的), but today, there are many different styles of jeans, for example, straight-leg jeans, pencil-leg jeans, baggy jeans-almost any style you can imagine.
Today, millions of people wear jeans to go to work in offices, as well as to go out. Jeans are as popular today as they ever were, but there is one thing that no one is really sure about-why are they called “jeans”? Do you know why?

Asking for directions is the first thing we do when we arrive in a new place, or even when we are just trying to find a strange place. Knowing how to ask for them can make our life much easier.
Use greetings (问候) and polite expressions. Starting the conversation with a greeting is necessary. If you want to get a nice answer, you’d better begin by saying hello first. And some words like “may” “can” and “could” will help you express yourself better.
Build your words. You should know the basic words when asking for directions. It may be useful for you to remember some famous places. Then try to use the right words when asking for a direction.
Get to know the transportation system. Sometimes, you may find that you are still far from the place you want to visit. Which kind of public transportation should you choose? You might ask like this, “Is it far?” “Do I need to take the bus or the subway there?”
Don’t be afraid of using symbols. Every city in the world has its own symbols. You can decrease (减少) search time if you know what the most important symbols are in the city. And if you pay attention to your place, you may find that there are many symbols here.
Don’t be too shy to ask. Learn to relax if you get lost somewhere. Every person may do that from time to time, especially when visiting a new city. But always make sure you can ask others for help.

Have you ever heard about the electric chopsticks? They were invented by the Japanese scientists. The electric chopsticks can help people take in less salt by adding the salty taste to food, so people can still enjoy delicious food.
How can the chopsticks work? Wiring (电线) connects the chopsticks to a small computer on your hand. Weak electricity carries sodium ions (钠离子) from food through the chopsticks to your mouth. They’ll create a sense of saltiness in your mouth. As a result, the salty taste increases by 1.5 times.
The traditional diet in Japan is salty. A Japanese adult usually eats about 10 grams of salt each day. That is twice the amount (数量) one should take in according to the World Health Organization. More salt intake will lead to high blood pressure (血压), strokes (中风) and some other diseases.
“To avoid suffering from (遭受) these diseases, we need to eat less salt,” the scientists say. “If Japanese people try to reduce salt intake in the usual ways, they will need to cut many of their favorite foods from their diet, or they will have to eat tasteless food.”
The scientists are making their chopsticks better and hope to have them ready to sell as early as next year.

How I have changed
Time flies, and I have grown up a lot. Comparing with the past, I have changed in appearance, personality, hobbies, and lifestyle.
The most important change is my personality. I used to be very shy and introverted. I remember when I was in Grade Seven, I was afraid to speak in front of the class. One day, our teacher asked me to give a presentation. I was so nervous that I almost cried. However, with the encouragement of my teacher and classmates, I managed to finish it. Since then, I started to gain confidence. I joined the school’s debate team and participated in various activities. Gradually, I became more outgoing and confident.
Now, I am not afraid to express myself in public. This change has made my life more colorful and meaningful.
