Hua Weiguang was a teacher before. After he retired (退休), he took up taking photos. Ten years ago, Hua found some people planting trees in his hometown, Horqin, and then he started to take photos of them.
Because of desertification (沙漠化), people could hardly find any plants in Horqin at that time. In Hua’s photos we can find many things such as sandstorms, young trees and the people who fight against desertification.
It was difficult to plant trees at that time. The workers had to wear masks, hats and scarves all the time. In summer, it was so hot that the workers had to lie down next to their cars to cool off. They also had to eat their lunch with the blowing sand. What about sunstroke (中暑)? Well, they took some medicine, drank a little water and then continued working.
Now there are all kinds of plants, and a lot of animals have made their homes here. Without Hua’s photos, no one would believe that these changes are possible. People planted trees one after another. And they built a green great wall there.

Jonny, a 15-year-old student, is checking his dad’s old jacket. He says, “you’re never going to wear this again. Can I have it?”
Keith has had a bad day at work, and he is feeling old. And Jonny has hit his pain.
Keith raises his voice and says, “What? You mean I’m too old to wear the jacket again?”
Jonny feels like this has come out of nowhere, and now he feels hurt. “But I only asked. Why are you shouting at me?”
“But I don’t like being treated as though I’m too old.” Both of them feel a bit upset.
Have you ever had a similar argument with the people around you? Here are some tips for you to remember when you’re getting mad.
●Accept your feelings and consider the other person’s feelings. That means not always making yourself “right” or “clever” and the other person “wrong” or “stupid”.
●Explain yourself and not the other person, so you can speak out your ideas by starting with “I” but not “You”.
●Don’t always have to reflect before reacting (回应). If you feel angry, I think it’s a good idea to stop a moment and understand why.
●Don’t decide the purpose of the other person by your guessing. Try to work out what he or she is feeling, and admit (承认) it if you were wrong.
Don’t forget that it’s never too late to start the ways of communicating.
42. Jonny felt hurt because his dad ______.
A. hit his pain B. had a busy day C. liked the jacket D. was angry with him

Have you watched livestreaming (直播) shows given by virtual hosts? They look like real people, but in fact, they’re just digital humans created by AI companies.
Xmov is such an AI company in China. Set up in 2018, it has created lots of great digital humans. Xmov is the first company in China to create a virtual star named Ling, who is always in a traditional Chinese costume. Last year, the company also used a 3D AI host to manifest their new products to over 300 guests at an event.
Now many companies are using virtual hosts to sell their products. For one thing, it costs much less than building a traditional livestreaming room and team. For another, virtual hosts can work 24 hours a day.
Virtual humans are used in more industries. In the near future, we may see them act as teachers, guides, and so on. It will not only improve many industries, but also allow human workers to put more energy into creative work instead of doing boring tasks.
The AI technology is great without doubt, but it can’t completely take humans’ place. For example, it will be difficult for digital humans to build trust with customers like real people. Also, the use of digital workers may lead to some safety problems if they’re not well managed and controlled.
45. What does the underlined word “manifest” probably mean?
A. Create. B. Send. C. Develop. D. Show.
46. Which of the followings are virtual hosts’ advantages?
①They’re cheaper. ②They’re more popular.
③They can work longer. ④They can do creative work.
A. ①② B. ③④ C. ①③ D. ②④
47. What can we infer from Paragraph 4?
A. Many industries will disappear. B. Virtual humans will be widely used.
C. Virtual humans will do more creative work. D. More jobs will be created in different industries.
48. What’s the best title (标题) for the text?
A. The use of virtual humans B. The history of online shopping
C. The difficulties of live streaming D. The development of AI companies

Fruit tea, toys, and handicrafts (手工艺品) … walk out of your home and go to a night market when the sun sets and you’ll feel as if the day just begins.
There are many new kinds of night markets across the country. Some of the markets have regular opening time, but others don’t. Bringing in popular things or recreating ancient Chinese markets, night markets are becoming very popular with young people.
The night market at Xixili Street in Haikou, Hainan has interested many people. Different from more traditional night markets, “you can see pet culture, handmade culture…” said Wang Yaqi to China Daily. He is a student from Hainan University.
Xu Dongjie, a pet stall owner (摊主) at the market, told Xinhua that the number of buyers there was larger than that of her pet shop. For her, being part of the market is also a way to relax and make friends with pet lovers.
In a night market, people can also have a taste of traditional culture. At a market in Haikou, 30 stalls recreated the look of streets during the Song Dynasty. They put up ancient decorations and had stall workers wearing clothes of ancient times.
Many cities are trying night markets to make the economy (经济) better. The “Night Touring of Wanshougong” project in Jiangxi has become a local hot spot. In Chongqing, one night market is full of stalls set up in the trunks (后备箱) of cars. “Shoppers enjoy the night market, and at the same time, it builds up the confidence of stall workers. It also provides a new way of living for people who look for jobs,” Liu Jiangyong, a worker from Chongqing, told Xinhua.
The government has encouraged businesses to develop a night-time economy (经济). Night markets play a big part in the night-time economy.
49. What’s the main idea of Paragraph 5?
A. People in Haikou love the Song Dynasty.
B. People can feel traditional culture at the night market.
C. People sell clothes from the Song Dynasty.
D. People like to dress up in the style of the Song Dynasty.
50. How does the writer explain the popularity of night markets in Paragraph 3&4?

52. What can we learn about the night market from the sixth paragraph?
A. It can make poor people become rich.
B. It turns many buyers into stall owners.
C. It is good for both buyers and stall owners.
D. It provides young people with chances to become famous.

Jiaozi, also known as Chinese dumplings, is a must-have during holidays in Northern China. It dates back to ancient times.
Jiaozi is one of the most important foods in Chinese New Year. Since jiaozi is in the shape of ancient Chinese gold or silver ingots (银锭), it symbolizes wealth (象征着财富). Traditionally, the members of a family get together to make dumplings on New Year’s Eve. They may hide a coin in one of the dumplings. The person who finds the coin will be likely to have good luck. As the Spring Festival marks the start of a new year, people choose to eat jiaozi in the hope of having a good future in the coming new year.
Based on your taste, you can make different kinds of Chinese dumplings using different filling. There is no set rule as to what makes dumpling fillings. They can be anything from vegetables, meat or seafood. Whatever the fillings are, the wrapping (包) skill needs to be exquisite (精美的) to make jiaozi good-looking.
As China is a country with a vast territory (幅员辽阔), there are differences in different areas in ways of making jiaozi or even serving it. For example, dumpling wrappers are made with a rolling stick in Beijing and Hebei province, while in some parts of Inner Mongolia, wrappers are hand-pressed.

Last week, I went to the science and technology museum for a visit. I was greatly interested in a new kind of robot Home Doctor.
Home Doctor looks like a lovely girl, and it is about 1.2 meters tall. It is made from recycled materials, like glass and plastic. Home Doctor can do all kinds of housework and speak different foreign languages. Home Doctor also has some new functions. It can not only give people lots of advice on health, but also treat common diseases at home. It will save people a lot of time, because they needn’t go to the hospital whenever they feel sick or get hurt. What’s more, it can help take good care of the old people and babies at home.
