Joyful and forgetful of Shu
After Liu Bei's death during the Three Kingdoms period, his son Liu Shan succeeded him and became known as the "Last Emperor of Shu."
Liu Shan was indulgent and lacked ambition, and despite the full support of wise ministers like Zhuge Liang, Shu could not be revitalized.
After Zhuge Liang's death, Liu Shan relied on the eunuch Huang Hao, which led to increasing corruption in the government, and eventually Shu was destroyed by Wei.
At that time, the Wei ruler Cao Xuan was merely a nominal emperor, with real power held by Sima Zhao.
Sima Zhao accepted Liu Shan's surrender, ordered him and his family to leave Chengdu in Shu and move to the Wei capital Luoyang, then gave him a severe reprimand and appointed him as "Prince of Anle," providing him with housing and expenses for his support. When Liu Shan was reprimanded by Sima Zhao, he was pale with fear, worrying that he might be executed.
Unexpectedly, not only was he not killed, but he was also granted the title of Anle Prince, and he finally breathed a sigh of relief.
The next day, Liu Shan personally went to Sima Zhao's residence to express his gratitude, and Sima Zhao even held a banquet in his honor.
At the banquet, first, Wei’s songs and dances were performed, making the officials from Shu feel very awkward, but Liu Shan was very pleased.
Then, Sima Zhao arranged for the performance of Shu’s songs and dances. The Shu officials wept, while Liu Shan remained cheerful, showing no sign of sorrow for the fallen kingdom.
Sima Zhao, seeing this, remarked to a Wei official, "Such heartlessness in a person! Even if Zhuge Liang were still alive, he could not long support such a ruler!"
He then asked Liu Shan, "Do you still miss Shu?" Liu Shan replied, "I am very happy here and do not miss Shu."
Seeing Liu Shan’s response, the former Shu officials were naturally very anxious and saddened.
After a while, Liu Shan stood up to go to the bathroom, and the former Shu "Secretary Lang" Xie Zheng immediately followed him.
In the corridor, Xie Zheng secretly told him, "Your Majesty, how can you say you do not miss Shu? If Sima Zhao asks you again, you should cry and say: ‘I have not had a single day without missing Shu.’ This way, we might still have a chance to return."
Liu Shan remembered Xie Zheng’s words and returned to the banquet.
Sure enough, Sima Zhao asked Liu Shan again if he missed Shu. Liu Shan followed Xie Zheng’s advice and replied with a show of sadness, but as he could not shed any tears, he just closed his eyes.
Sima Zhao guessed that Xie Zheng must have instructed Liu Shan, so he deliberately asked, "Why is your answer exactly the same as Xie Zheng’s?"
Liu Shan, taken aback, opened his eyes and said, "You are right, it was exactly Xie Zheng who instructed me to say so."
Sima Zhao and those present could not help but laugh, and the former Shu officials were even more enraged by Liu Shan’s incompetence.
Liu Shan, whose nickname was "A Dou," later became a term used to mock those who are incapable, inept, or unable to maintain their achievements, referred to as "A Dou" or "unable to uplift A Dou."
Later, people often use the term "lebu si Shu" (乐不思蜀) to describe those who find joy in a new environment, become content with their current situation, and forget their homeland or roots.
During the Han Dynasty, there were two very close friends named Lei Yi and Chen Chong.
Their bond was even stronger than that of biological brothers.
One day, they both went to take an examination together.
Lei Yi passed the exam, but Chen Chong did not.
Lei Yi thought to himself, “Chen Chong’s knowledge is better than mine, it’s such a pity that he didn’t pass!”
So, Lei Yi went to see the official in charge of the exam and said, “Sir, please transfer my title to Chen Chong; he is more deserving than I am!”
The official, of course, ignored him and said, “Nonsense, titles cannot be transferred like that.”
Lei Yi was very disappointed and said, “In that case, I don’t want this title either!”
Lei Yi pretended to go mad and refused to take up his official duties, eventually being relieved of his title.
Years later, Lei Yi and Chen Chong took the exam again and this time, both of them passed.
They were also fortunate to be assigned to work in the same place.
Lei Yi happily said to Chen Chong, “Chen Brother, please take care of me from now on.”
Chen Chong replied, “Lei Brother, you’re joking. It’s you who have been taking care of me!”
Both of them were delighted to work together, and their friendship grew even stronger.
Everyone who saw their friendship said, “Glue and lacquer bind strongly together, but it still can’t compare to the deep friendship between Lei Yi and Chen Chong!”
Later, this story inspired the idiom “胶漆相投,” which describes the deep friendship between good friends, as solid as the bond between glue and lacquer.
Grinding an iron pestle into a needle
Li Bai, a famous poet of the Tang Dynasty, did not like studying when he was young and often skipped school to wander the streets.
One day, as Li Bai was wandering around, he found himself outside the city.
He was captivated by the warm sunshine, cheerful birds, and the flowers swaying in the wind, and thought to himself, “What a wonderful day; it would be so dull to stay indoors all day reading.”
As he walked, he came across an old woman with white hair sitting in front of a dilapidated cottage, grinding an iron pestle as thick as a pole.
Li Bai approached her and asked, “Grandma, what are you doing?”
“I’m grinding this iron pestle to make it into a sewing needle,” the old woman replied, looking up and smiling at Li Bai before returning to her task.“我要把这根铁杵磨成一个绣花针。”
“A sewing needle?” Li Bai asked again, “You mean a needle for sewing clothes?”
“Of course!”“当然!”
“But this iron pestle is so thick; how could it ever become a delicate needle?”“可是,铁杵这么粗,什么时候能磨成细细的绣花针呢?”
The old woman replied, “Just as dripping water can wear through stone and the Foolish Old Man can move mountains, why can’t this iron pestle be ground into a sewing needle?”
“But you are already so old,” Li Bai remarked.
“As long as I put in more effort than others, there’s nothing I can’t achieve.”
The old woman’s words made Li Bai feel deeply ashamed, and from then on, he never skipped school again.
He devoted himself to his studies every day and eventually became a renowned poet known throughout the ages.
The Chinese idiom "铁杵磨针" (tiě chǔ mó zhēn) literally means "grinding an iron pestle into a needle" and is used to metaphorically indicate that with determination and persistent effort, even the most difficult tasks can be accomplished. It originates from the Southern Song Dynasty work "Fāng Yú Shèng Lǎn" by Zhu Mu.
