This year had been very difficult financially for my family. With the holiday around
the corner, I didn’t know how to buy Christmas presents for my children.
One day while window shopping with my 4-month-old son, a stranger walked up to
me and began a conversation asking the usual baby questions like how old he was,
whether he was my only child etc. After a few minutes of talking, he introduced himself
as Ralph, and asked for help with shopping for his grandkids since he didn’t know what
to buy. I agreed.

We went through the entire store picking out this and that. The whole time he kept
apologizing for taking up my time and was saying how it was hard to come across nice
people these days. When the cart was full of clothes and toys, Ralph thanked me for my
help. We parted and I went on window shopping for a few items.
When I left the store about 20 minutes later I heard a woman calling out “Ma’am,
Ma’am with the baby, you left something”. At first I kept walking because I didn’t think
she was speaking to me. When she caught up to me, she said she had something for me
at customer service. I followed her there and she pushed a shopping cart full of bags
toward me and handed me an envelope with a card that read:
“Thank you for helping an old man be joyful. The presents in the cart are for you
and your children. You are a kind person and this is my thanks to you. Never change. —
Ralph”
I looked around to see if I could find Ralph but he was gone. I stood there for a few
minutes as tears rolled down my cheeks. I was speechless and very thankful. On
Christmas day my 10-year-old son asked where the presents came from and I told
him—Santa.

You know the feeling. You finish a full meal and are like “I’m never eating again.”
But then, out comes a beautiful piece of cake. And, you said you were full, but not for
dessert! It turns out you really can “make room” for dessert.
And there’s a scientific reason why. The thing that gives you room for dessert is
called “Sensory-Specific Satiety”. That’s what Dr. Rolls, a nutritional scientist, has been
studying since the 1980s. Here is how her experiment went. She gave six people a giant
plate of spaghetti and told them to eat until they were full. And then, for the second
course, she gave them more. Then, she gave them ice cream. On average, after they said
they were full on spaghetti, each person could eat just one more ounce of it in their
second serving. But when she gave them ice cream, somehow they could eat three times
as much. They “made room” for dessert.
The experiment shows that when you feel full, it’s not necessarily that your
stomach is physically full. It’s more about how interested you are in eating more.
Sensory-specific satiety is the change in how much you like a food, how much you want
to eat, as you’re eating it. “I’ve just had enough of the food; I want something else” is
really what sensory-specific satiety is.
And that natural ability has a purpose: it’s meant to keep us healthy. It’s going to
help to guarantee that we’re going to eat the variety of nutrients that we need. However,
it can backfire of course, because if we are presented with a variety of foods, it makes us
extra likely to overeat.
32. What’s the purpose of the first paragraph?
A. To lead to the main topic. B. To make a comparison.
C. To amuse the readers. D. To summarize the main idea.
33. According to Dr. Rolls, why did the people “make room” for ice cream?
A. Because they had a wrong feeling. B. Because there was a change in food variety.
C. Because they lied about feeling full. D. Because the ice cream was more delicious.
34. What does the underlined word “backfire” probably mean?
A. Consume much energy. B. Discourage people from eating.
C. Have the opposite result. D. Produce a helpful effect.
35. In which section of a newspaper may the text appear?
A. Entertainment. B. Education. C. Culture. D. Health.

My husband Wade and I run Southern Koala Rescue and are committed to saving as
many koalas as we can. One day, we were called out to rescue a koala that was stuck in a
burning tree; but when the flames died down, we decided to return, thinking there could
be other koalas that needed our help.
Wade and I were walking through the blackened bushland with our team of
volunteers when I spotted a koala on a burnt tree with a swollen and infected wound the
size of a 20-cent piece on its neck. Using rings on the end of poles, we coaxed(哄诱)the
koala down and put it in a carrier before having it examined. The wound needed a minor
operation and, afterwards, the koala, who we named Claire, had to stay indoors to keep
flies off the injury. Claire was frightened of me at first, but after four weeks I gained her
trust.
Finally, it was time for Claire to get ready to go outside and build up enough
muscle movement to be released back into the wild. This was the most satisfying part of
my job because not all koalas can be saved. I did miss them when they were gone, but I
knew they were not meant to be pets.
After the Black Summer fires destroyed so much of the country from 2019 to 2020,
extinction for koalas is a very real possibility. For individuals, one of the easiest ways
you can help koalas is leaving a dish of water in your backyard. It can save a life and
that counts.
4. Why were the volunteer team called out?
A. To put out a big fire. B. To save a trapped koala.
C. To search for missing animals. D. To clear the blackened bushland.
5. What can we learn about Claire?
A. It was afraid of flies. B. It got hurt by hunters.
C. It needed a major operation. D. It developed trust in humans.
6. Which part of the job does the author find the most meaningful?
A. Sending rescued animals back to nature. B. Providing a shelter for wild animal.
C. Curing the injured animals. D. Petting many wild animals.
7. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. Humans are responsible for the big fire. B. Nothing can stop wildlife dying out.

C. Small acts can make a big difference. D. Animals are human’s best friends.

“Instagram(a social networking app) will cut out many users’ accounts on
December 20. To protect your account, repost this warning #KeepMyAccountSafe.”
Every few months, it happens again-a dozen of annoying posts from my kids’ friends
suddenly start to appear on my Instagram news feed.
According to a new study by Stanford University, most kids don’t know what news
is fake. Researchers asked more than 7,800 middle school and high school students to
complete 56 tasks, like distinguishing an advertisement from a real news story on a
website and determining which blog in a series was most reliable. They found that
students judged the credibility of blogs based not on the source of the material, but on
how much detail they contained, or whether a large photo was attached.
“Many people assume that because young people are fluent in social media, they
can distinguish fake news, but our work shows the opposite to be true,” wrote lead study
author Sam Wineburg, a professor at Stanford’s Graduate School of Education.
Both Google and Facebook are now taking steps to control misleading news from
making its way on their platforms, but they won’t be able to eliminate it completely.
That is why it’s now more important than ever to teach our kids to think critically when
it comes to believing various information sources.
“In the coming months, we look forward to sharing our assessments and working
with educators to create materials that will guide young people in the sea of
disinformation they encounter online,” said Wineburg.
8. How does the author introduce the topic of the passage?
A. By stating opinions.B. By showing findings.
C. By quoting sayings.D. By citing a post.
9. According to researchers, what determines the credibility of online information?
A. The source of the material. B. The popularity of the website.
C. The amount of details. D. The size of relevant photos.
10. What does the underlined word “eliminate” mean in paragraph 4?
A. Digest. B. Update. C. Estimate. D. Remove.
11. Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?
A. Stronger Together: The Internet Changes Our Life
B. Be Careful: Kids Are Bad at Identifying Fake News
C. Reliable News Has No Place on Social Media
D. Educators Have a Long Way to Go to Guide the Young
D
For people who are deaf or hard of hearing, it can be difficult to pick out important
sounds, such as knocks at the door or fire alarms. Now researchers at the University of
Washington have developed a smartwatch app called SoundWatch, which identifies
sounds and reminds users of them with a vibration and a visual readout.
The project was led by Dhruv Jain, inspired by his own experience being hard of
hearing. SoundWatch uses the smartwatch’s microphone to listen out for particular
sounds, sends the data to a user’s connected phone for processing, then back to the
watch to display in text what the sound is, and how loud it is. That’s accompanied by a
vibration to tell the wearer that something has been detected.
“This technology provides people with a way to experience sounds that require an
action—such as getting food from the microwave when it beeps, which can improve
people’s experiences and help them feel more connected to the world,” says Jain. “But
it’s not perfect of course. The app sometimes gets it wrong, or takes too long to tell a
user. However, these issues are being worked on.”
Disability is highly personal , and Jain hopes his team can find ways for people to
personalize this app for their own specific needs. For example, people can be told about

the sounds they care about- a husband’s or wife’s voice versus general speech, the back
door opening versus the front door opening, and more.
12. What does “them” in paragraph 1 refer to?
A. Researchers. B. Apps. C. Sounds. D. Fire alarms.
13. What is mainly discussed about SoundWatch in paragraph 2?
A. How it works. B. Why it is invented.
C. Who it is intended for. D. What it can detect.
14. Which word can best describe Jain’s attitude to SoundWatch?
A. Doubtful. B. Critical. C. Objective. D. Disapproving.
15. What does Jain expect SoundWatch to be?
A. Affordable. B. Personally tailored C. Multifunctional. D. Fashionably designed.

Meet Boji. He is often seen waiting on train platforms and riding buses around
town. He takes commuting so seriously that he has become an international celebrity and
a VIP for all commuters in Istanbul. Actually, Boji is a much-loved stray animal with
高二英语试题 第 7 页 共 30 页
large brown eyes and golden fur.
Boji was first spotted riding the subway in August. He caught people’s attention
because he seemed to understand how to use the transport system. “We noticed a dog
using our subways and trains. He let passengers get off before jumping onto the train and
knew where to get out,” Aylin Erol from Metro Istanbul said.
Vets took Boji in for a check up, placing a GPS tracker on him so they could record
his journeys. They soon discovered that this traveling dog covers some 30 kilometers
onpublic transport a day, using at least 29 subway stations. So he was nicknamed Boji,
theTurkish word for “subway car”.
Stray animals are a regular part of life in Istanbul. As a large city in the world,
Istanbul is also home to 150,000 stray dogs and cats. As locals have been known to feed
and leave water for these street animals for centuries, stray animals are a regular part of
life for the residents of Istanbul.
Yet a traveling dog is new even for Istanbul residents. “You take the train and,
suddenly, you see Boji. You just smile and catch the moment. Boji reminds us that we
can still enjoy Istanbul as we rush about. This sweet dog sits upright on trains watching
the world go by. As he travels, he brings smiles and warmth to tired passengers,” Erol
told Reuters.
4. Why did Boji draw people's attention?
A. He had an attractive appearance.B. He could understand commuters’ orders.
C. He had experiences of living on streets.D. He could ride public transportation by
himself.
5. For what purpose did vets place a GPS tracker on Boji?
A. To monitor his health.B. To record the route he takes.
C. To discover his favorite destination.D. To help him find the way home.
6. What can we learn about Istanbul?
A. It is the largest city in the world.B. Its residents live a rather poor life.C. Its location
is suitable for raising animals.D. It has a tradition of caring for stray animals.
7. How do passengers probably feel when seeing Boji?
A. Pitiful. B. Scared. C. Inspired. D. Annoyed.

Coffee is the morning go-to drink. Globally, over 10 billion kilograms of coffee is
produced every year and the demand is continuously growing. However, it is unlikely to
produce more coffee if climate change continues and reduces the amount of land
available. That’s why it’s necessary to find alternative methods of producing coffee.
Now, Finland is leading the way to grow its own coffee in the lab without using the
beans. The coffee is being produced through cellular agriculture, an innovation that
could make growing coffee more sustainable, according to Finland’s VTT Technical
Research Center.
The man made coffee is made using cells from real coffee plants. Research team
leader Heiko Rischer said, “Initially a cell culture is started from a plant part (e.g. a leaf).
The formed cells are reproduced on a specific nutrient medium. Ultimately, the cells are
高二英语试题 第 8 页 共 30 页
moved to a bioreactor from which the biomass (生物质) is then harvested. The cells are
dried and roasted and then coffee can be tasted.” Added environmental benefits of this
kind of coffee is that it will require far less water, will have a smaller transportation
footprint, and there will be no pesticides used in the production process.
At this point the coffee being produced is experimental food and have to receive
approval from the FDA and European certification. The product is also being refined and
needs time to come into commercial production. Although lab-grown meat and dairy is
starting to be commercially available, the question is: will people accept a cell-grown
replacement to conventional coffee? Only time will tell if the world is ready for a cup of
lab-grown coffee.
8. What is the major challenge to produce more coffee?
A. Climate change.B. Outdated technology. C. Decreased demand.D. Soil pollution.
9. Which process happens on the specific nutrient medium?
A. Removing cells.B. Reproducing cells. C. Harvesting cells.D. Drying cells.
10. What does the underlined word “refined” mean in paragraph 4?
A. Sold.B. Consumed.C. Improved.D. Wrapped,
11. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A. Let Lab-grown Coffee Fill Your Cup
B. Enjoy First-class Life with More Coffee
C. Say Goodbye to Old- fashioned Agriculture
D. Save Finland by Being Environment friendly

Creativity is usually associated with open spaces and freedom, However,
sometimes it can be beneficial, even essential, to build walls, make rules and impose (强
加) limitations on ourselves in order to get our creativity flowing.
The fact is that unlimited options are very difficult to deal with — they keep us
staring at the “blank page”. Our minds need some guidance; if there are no rules or
restrictions in place, it’s hard to begin the creative process and even more difficult to
remain focused or purposeful.
Most creative careers have limitations imposed upon them. If you' re an engineer
working on a new product, you have instructions, including purpose, target market,
materials and size. If you're a writer, you may have length or style restrictions to deal
with. There is hardly a real life example of creation that exists without some kind of
rules.
Famous for the wildly successful daily art project a skull a day for a year, Noah
Scalin is an artist who created unique pieces of art using drawing, sculpture, painting —
any other media he had around — to create representation of a human head. Each day he
challenged himself to create a “head” that had to be unique during that 24-hour period.
He couldn’t sit back waiting for inspiration to strike: he was forced to constantly seek
out new materials and ideas to fill up his “blank page”.
Acts of creation without limitation exist in reality only in the most extreme cases.
Inventors don’t generally wake up one day and say, “I’m going to invent something
高二英语试题 第 9 页 共 30 页
today.” They look around at what there is and what needs improving, and work with the
resources available. While anyone can come up with random, fantastic ideas without
direction or purpose, imposing limitations is a more effective way of encouraging
creativity, and can inspire true innovation.
12. In what aspect do unlimited options influence people’s thinking?
A. Strengthening focus.B. Setting unrealistic goals.
C. Slowing down creative process.D. Generating new thinking patterns.
13. Why does the author mention “engineer” and “writer” in paragraph 3?
A. To make a comment.B. To introduce a topic.
C. To make a comparison.D. To support an opinion.
14. What's Noah Scalin’s trick to success?
A. Carrying out a fixed task daily.B. Inventing new painting materials.
C. Forcing himself to sit still for hours.D. Creating as many works as possible.
15. What message does the author intend to convey in the text?
A. The name of joy is creativity.B. No limitation, no innovation.
C. Rules are meant to be broken.D. Success comes with a free mind.

It is impossible to tell what the future holds. For Nelly Cheboi, the future was
guided by her childhood dream of wanting to change the lives of those around her; little
did she know that technology would become the gateway for such change.
A native of Mogotio, Kenya, Nelly Cheboi grew up in a run-down house, walked to
school barefoot every day, and went to bed hungry every night-something not
uncommon for those in her community. Nevertheless, she studied hard and earned a
full-ride college scholarship. She had consumed plenty of books growing up, but didn’t
know a thing about computers. If given a ten page paper in college, Cheboi would
choose to hand-write it because she typed too slowly.
It was only in Cheboi’s third year of college that she encountered computer
science—a subject she was fascinated by. She learned low technology could serve the
economy and realized that, in order to fix the systems in Kenya that kept people in a
cycle of poverty (贫穷), she could encourage her community to work online. That then
became the motivation for TechLit Africa.
Founded in 2018, TechLit Africa is Cheboi’s nonprofit organization that provides
students in rural Kenya with access to technology and the ability to learn fundamental
digital skills. Computers are donated, transported to Kenya, and then refurbished(翻
新 )locally. TechLit Africa provides the computers and curriculum to schools. Schools
and parents cover for the costs of local operations.
Today, Cheboi is working on ensuring TechLit Africa keeps running, especially in
terms of funding. She says that TechLit Africa’s programs are the highlight of students’
days-but it is difficult to convince parents, teachers and the county government of the
digital economy and how technology can financially support people.
“In a way, TechLit Africa serves as a bridge to connect two worlds-kids interact,
ask questions and imagine what life is like out there while understanding the value of the
Internet,” Cheboi says. In doing so, kids unlock global opportunities and a second
chance at a more fulfilling life.
4.Where did Cheboi’s weakness lie according to paragraph 2?

Imagine if it were easy for everyone to get to the seashore, to smell the sea winds
and to feel seawater on their skin. Wouldn’t it be great if people with walking difficulty
could also get closer to the ocean to enjoy the thrill of a sunset, watching the sun’s rays
light up the waves? The good news is that things are moving in the right direction!
In a CDC study, around 14% of adults in the US report a mobility disability,
defined as serious difficulty walking or climbing stairs. This can make vacation planning
a challenge and put some destinations off-limits. But technology companies like
Mobi-mat are making a day at the beach for people with limited mobility a reality.
Mobi-mat has developed some exciting innovations like non-slip roll-out
accessibility mats(垫子 ). These function like red carpets at movie premieres(首映 ),
taking people with special needs right to the seashore. They are made of a fine nylon
material that is designed for people who use wheelchairs or may otherwise need a firmer
surface to cross the sand.
More cities are working to make enjoyment of the beach much more wide-ranging
in other creative ways based on regional conditions. The town of Jupiter in Florida has
opened up access to its beaches to people who have trouble going up and down stairs via
three new wide wooden walkovers. The Miami Herald recently reported on the
upcoming construction of a wheelchair-accessible beachfront observation platform, and
upgraded park with adaptive playground and exercise equipment for people with
disabilities in Miami Beach.
Inspired by creative innovation, forward-looking policymakers and companies, and
the shared demands of disabled people who are calling for better access to beautiful
beach locations, it seems that many more people of all abilities will be able to head to
the beach.
8.What is the good news mentioned in paragraph 1?
A. The seashore becomes the hottest destination.
B. The ocean environment changes for the better.
C. Beaches are more accessible to the disabled.
D. Approaching the sea benefits disabled people.

10.What can be inferred about the measures in Jupiter and Miami?
A. They’re well behind schedule.B. They center on ocean protection.

11.What is the purpose of this text?
A. To introduce a friendly move.B. To recommend a treatment.

People often call music a universal language, but do certain songs really cause the
same mental images in our minds? Scientists at Princeton find that while music
absolutely can stimulate(激发 )similar mental experiences, the results also strongly
suggest culture is a major factor.
A total of 622 people took part in the study. All of the volunteers came from one of
three locations: two suburban college towns in the US (one in Arkansas and the other in
Michigan), or the rural Chinese village of Dimen. It’s worth noting that the main
language in Dimen is Dong, a tonal language unrelated to the official language of China.
Locals there have little contact with Western media or culture at all. All participants
listened to the exact same 32 “musical stimuli”— which were 60-second cuts of
instrumental music. Half of these pieces came from Western music while the rest came
from Chinese music.
After hearing, researchers asked the groups about the images they saw in their
heads while listening. Incredibly, people from Arkansas and Michigan often described
very similar stories, even using the exact same words frequently. Dimen listeners, on the
other hand, envisioned stories that were similar to each other but quite different from the
American listeners. More specifically, one track led t o Americans seeing a cowboy in
the hot desert surveying an empty town. Meanwhile, Chinese participants imagined a
man in ancient times reflecting on the loss of a loved one.
“There’s something about the results that’s really surprising, especially because
people encounter music in 2022 often in a solitary way, over headphones. But it turns
out, it’s still a shared experience, almost like a shred dream, although not universally
shared, ”says Elizabeth Margulis, the study author.
The results paint a more complex picture of music’s power. Music can generate
remarkably similar stories in listeners’ minds, but it depends on a common set of cultural
experiences. So while we imagine music can bring people together, the opposite can also
be true-it can distinguish between sets of people with a different background or culture.
12.What is the probable reason for Dimen being selected for the study?
A. Its unique cultural background.B. Its close contact with US.
C. Its complex language system.D. Its long tradition of music.
13.What were the participants required to do after listening to music?
A. Exchange their comments on the scene.B. Imagine musicians’ original inspiration.
C. Describe the picture forming in mind.D. Recall personal music-related stories.

Visit America’s National Parks for Free on These Six Days in 2024
It’s time to plan a visit to your dream national park destination. For a few days each
year , every national park in America is free to visit — including hundreds of national
monuments, seashores, historic sites and more.
Less than a quarter of them have entry fees, but those that do charge up to $20 per
person or up to $35 per vehicle. Revenue (收入) from these fees stays in the National
Park Service to cover visitor services, including improving accessibility, restoring
wildlife habitat and more.
“National parks are places that awaken senses, inspire curiosity, encourage
reflection, and promote joy,” National Park Service Director Chuck Sams said in a
statement. “The entrance fee-free days expand opportunities for people to visit their
national parks and experience the beauty and history of our country.”
There’s a new addition to the entrance fee-free days in 2024: Juneteenth, which
became recognized as a national holiday on June 17, 2021.
National park free entry days for 2024:

life-threatening situation where he became trapped beneath a bus.
The 16-year-old found himself unable to move beneath a tyre (轮胎) of the bus
when he fell down during an attempt to catch the departing vehicle at a local stop on a
Monday afternoon. The quick response of the bus driver, who immediately stopped the
vehicle, coupled with the assistance of roughly 40 people, including both passengers and
bystanders, led to a remarkable achievement. Together, they managed to lift the right
side of the bus sufficiently to free the young man.
Frank Kurze, one of the courageous volunteers who participated in the rescue,
recalled the messy scene, stating, “I saw the men trying to lift the bus, and it was clear to
me that I also had to help lift the bus and try to pull the young man from underneath.”
Nearby medical professionals from a healthcare center in the Spandau
neighborhood of Berlin instantly arrived at the scene to provide vital first aid. Michelle
Rueckborn, one of the nurses on duty, shared their response, saying, “We were at work
when we heard screams, and our coworker looked out of the window and saw what had
happened, and said ‘Grab the doctor’s kit and run.’”
Sandra Grunwald, another nurse present at the scene, added, “He was responsive
but understandably confused, unsure of what was unfolding around him.” Despite the
frightening circumstances, the young man unbelievably survived with only minor
injuries, thanks to the collective effort of around 40 individuals who came together to
perform a heroic rescue.

I came across the book Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less from a library
app and I can say that after reading, it did not disappoint.
The book fits into the personal development category. It talks about how important
it is to focus on absolutely important things and remove the unnecessary distractions.
The common problem, Greg McKeown says, is spotting the important things.
Essentialism means continuously defining where we can create the most value, then
finding ways to execute these tasks most effortlessly.
高二英语试题 第 15 页 共 30 页
In Essentialism, McKeown draws on experience and insight from working with the
leaders of the most innovative companies in the world to show how to achieve the
pursuit of less. More importantly, by applying a more selective standard for what is
essential, the pursuit of less allows us to regain control of our own choices so we can
channel our time, energy and effort into making the highest possible contribution toward
the goals and activities that matter.
McKeown further explores the difference between an essentialist and a
non-essentialist. He gives fantastic and relatable examples from his life as well as from
others to illustrate how functioning as a non-essentialist is harmful for both you and
those around you. He says the primary difference in both of them is the one who says
yes to everything and the other (the essentialist) says yes only to the things that matter.
He also tells that a non-essentialist will commit to everything and put his personal
priorities (优先事项 ) on the side while that is opposite in case of the essentialist.
Whether it is in work-life or personal life, a non-essentialist will try to do more by
quick-fix solutions but an essentialist will focus on removing barriers and nothing else.
He also gives us examples of famous people like Mahatma Gandhi who followed
essentialism.
Finally, the book tells us how to set out the important things in our life — like a
routine of 8 hours of sleep, daily journal or playing or relaxing every day to let our
minds rest. In today’s fast-paced life, McKeown says, restfulness is a precious escape
from the noisy world.
8.What does the underlined word “execute” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Carry out.B. Switch between.C.Watch out for.D. Get away from.
9.What is mainly stressed in paragraph 3?
A. The significance of essentialism.B. The inspiration for the book.
C. Achievements of essentialists.D. Strategies for pursuing less.
10.Which of the following is a feature of essentialists?
A. Commitment to daily work.B. High efficiency in work.
C. Positive influence by celebrities.D. Concentration on priorities.
11.What does McKeown suggest people do?
A. Avoid tiring work if possible.B. Find meaning in everyday life.
C. Take a break when necessary.D. Remain restless and unmotivated.

For years, those looking to generate electricity without using fossil fuels have
dreamed of exploring the virtually unlimited heat source that lies 8 kilometres or more
beneath Earth’s surface. Previous efforts have been blocked because getting to that heat
requires drilling into rock that is too hard for conventional techniques.
Now, one possibility involves repurposing an existing technology to dig this source
and produce electricity at a lower cost than any existing form of power generation. This
isn’t, however, simply a matter of economics. Even if all nations were to meet the
commitments that were made under the Paris Agreement on climate change,
temperatures are expected to rise by roughly 3℃ by 2100. Digging deep geothermal (地
高二英语试题 第 16 页 共 30 页
热 ) energy has the promise of replacing fossil fuel-powered plants to prevent this
disaster.
The technology that might enable this, which makes use of millimetre waves, was
improved for academic research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and could
provide access to the 400℃ to 500℃ heat that lies several kilometres below Earth’s
surface. Obtained through a hole, this heat could produce steam for electricity generation
as a zero-carbon alternative for fossil fuels.
Millimetre waves are similar to, but vastly more powerful than, the waves used in a
microwave oven. Created by a device called a gyrotron, these waves have now been
proven to vaporise (汽化 ) rock according to Carlos Araque,CEO of start-up Quaise
Energy, which has a licence to commercialise the technology for deep drilling.
Combined with conventional drilling, it might be possible to open a hole reaching large
amounts of deep heat.
The genius of this technology is that it matches existing facilities and expertise,
while the biggest difficulty will be delivering and focusing the millimetre waves so deep
underground.
This challenge can and must be met. Quaise Energy plans to complete a shallow
pilot project next year and construct two deep drill holes later. If its approach proves
attainable, deep geothermal energy could be employed extremely rapidly. The speed
with which a covid-19 vaccine (疫苗 ) was produced showed what the world can do
when faced with an emergency. Deep geothermal energy promises to be the equivalent
of a vaccine for the climate emergency.
12.Why does the author mention the Paris Agreement in paragraph 2?
A. To explain the complexity of climate change.
B. To show the urgency for sustainable resources.
C. To display the climate crisis caused by humans.
D. To prove the accuracy of prediction on temperature.
13.What can millimetre waves be used to do?
A. Generate enough powerful steam.B. Transform rock into heat energy.
C. Detect the location of deep heat.D. Create holes through hard rock.
14.What can be inferred about Quaise Energy’s plan?
A. It’s a hurried decision.B. It’s sort of unrealistic.
C. It’s highly anticipated.D. It’s inspired by vaccines.
15.Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. Exploring the EarthB. Drilling DeepC. HOT! Wave EnergyD. Heat for Heart!

On Monday, Jack’s mother sent him off to work for the carpenter. Jack worked hard,
and at the end he got a shiny new penny. Throwing it in the air, he dropped it in the

“Mom!” I screamed as I looked through the window, “Why is my Ink Spot sitting
in Mrs. Cleary’s window?”
Mom pushed past me to confirm it. Sure enough, across the street was Ink Spot
cleaning himself in the window of Mrs. Cleary’s sitting room. I couldn’t believe my eyes.
He was my cat, not Mrs. Cleary’s. She had already adopted twelve cats. Why must she

keep my cat?I could feel anger boiling up inside me. Meanwhile, Ink Spot’s leaving
without any signs upset me. A sense of being left out hit me hard.
Ink Spot was special for me. After my baby sister’s birth, “my” parents’ time was
taken by her. It seemed no one in the family cared about or even noticed me. Worse still,
I was packed off to a kindergarten. I hated being left out from the bottom of my heart.
It was when mom noticed me weeping in a corner one night that things began to
change. After that, Ink Spot came into my life. Every night, he curled(卷曲)up beside
me in bed and he was there for me after school when I raced home just to be with him.
I fell in love with Ink Spot the first time I saw its tiny black and white kitten, for
which I called him Ink Spot. Mom and daddy beamed with pleasure as my eyes danced
with joy again. It was the first time that I had smiled since my little baby sister came into
the family. As for me, he was more than a cat. Actually, he was my life.
But today when I came home, Ink Spot was in Mrs. Cleary’s window. I wanted him
back. But mom insisted that if Ink Spot stayed at Mrs. Cleary’s, that meant it was where
he wanted to be. “No!Mom, Ink Spot is my cat”, I protested wildly but I had to admit
the truth of mom’s words. Standing on the sidewalk, I was at a loss as to what to do.
Staring at Ink Spot for a while, I couldn’t stand the anger any longer.

Kareem sighed as he counted his money again. He was still short of fifty dollars to
buy the latest Speedster X bike. In order to save his pocket money to replace his old bike,
he had been packing sandwiches to school the last three months.
“How can I get that fifty dollars?” he thought to himself. His mind was wondering
when Mother’s voice disturbed his thoughts. “Kareem, I just ran into Aunty Kim, our
neighbour who just moved in next door. Her son, Shawn, will cycle to school next week.
Could you show him the shortcut to school later? It’s Saturday anyway!” Hearing this,
Kareem had no option but to obey it, He knew Mother had probably already volunteered
his service to Aunty Kim. “Oh, here’s a mail from your Grandma. Open it!” added
Mother.
Kareem’s grandmother lived abroad and she would send him photos and cards. He
opened the envelope and pulled out a greeting card. Incredibly, a fifty dollar note slipped
out as well! Kareem was wild with joy. Waving the note in the air, he shouted happily,
“Enough money for my bike!”
At 2 p. m. Kareem met Shawn as arranged by their mothers. The sooner he finished
this task, the sooner he could go to the bike shop. While the boys were cycling, a squirrel
(松鼠) appeared behind a parked car and dashed across the road so suddenly that the

The little country schoolhouse was heated by an old-fashioned, pot-bellied coal
stove (火炉). An eight-year-old boy named Glenn Cunningham had the job of coming to
school early each day so that he could use kerosene(煤油)to start the fire and warm the
room before his teacher and his classmates arrived.
One cold morning, someone mistakenly filled the kerosene container he used with
gas, and disaster struck. The class and teacher arrived to find the schoolhouse enveloped
in a big fire. Terrified on realizing that Glenn was inside, they rushed in and managed to
drag the unconscious(无意识的)little boy out of the flaming building more dead than
alive. He had major burns over the lower half of his body and was rushed to a nearby
county hospital.
From his bed, the seriously burned, half-conscious little boy faintly heard the
doctor talking to his heart-broken mother. The doctor told his mother that her son would
surely die-which might be for the best, really-for the terrible fire had ruined the lower
half of his body. From the waist down, Glenn had no ability to move at all. His thin,
scarred legs just hung there, all but lifeless.
But the brave boy didn’t want to die. Glenn made up his mind that he would
survive. And somehow, to the amazement of the physician, he did survive.
Returning home, Glenn was seen either in a wheelchair or in bed. One sunny day
his mother wheeled him out into the yard to get some fresh air. Over the grass and the
strong white fence bordering their lot, he watched other boys playing joyfully. He
couldn’t help looking back on the happy days before the disaster. With his thoughts
wandering back to those old golden memories, this brave little boy made up his mind.

shopping center. The thought of playing piano with so many people around made her
stomach clench into a knot.
On Saturday morning, as Mya helped Mom and Dad wrap presents for
Great-Grandma, she thought about her friends playing the piano at the shopping center.
She pictured hundreds of shoppers hanging around and listening while going from store
to store. Some of them would take breaks from shopping to sit on benches and watch the
piano players. “I’m so glad I won’t be there,” she thought to herself.
When Mya and her parents arrived at the retirement community, they greeted
Great-Grandma with hugs and wishes for a merry Christmas. Mrs. Carmen, the party
activities director, showed a short holiday movie first. Then they played games, and the
residents opened their gifts.
“We usually end by singing Christmas carols,” Mrs. Carmen said. “But our
pianoplayer wasn’t able to make it today.” “Mya plays the piano,” Great-Grandma
announced, smiling proudly.
“Wonderful,” Mrs. Carmen said. She smiled at Mya. “Mya, would you like to play
while we sing? It would be such a help.”
