Dear Dr. Know,
After I finish my homework, I often go online to chat with my friends. Sometimes I play computer games. But my parents don’t allow me to play computer games. Maybe they have heard too much news about how computer games harm children. Once I went to a net bar to play games after school, but I told my parents that I was playing basketball at school. I said so because I didn’t want to make them unhappy. I feel bad about it. However, I need to rest for a while by playing computer games after studying for a long time. I really want my parents to understand that. Do foreign parents do the same to their children? Please help me.
Xiao Yang
Dear Xiao Yang,
I don’t think it’s strange for parents to keep their children away from anything bad. Foreign parents will do the same as your parents do! They may not let their children watch TV for a long time. Or like your parents, they don’t want their children to play computer games. Talk to your parents and be honest to them, I think. Tell them what you are doing so to make them understand you. It’s never good to do things behind your parents’ back. Our parents seem to know what is the best for us. Remember: to be honest is the best way.
Good luck!

Amy was a dear little girl, but she was always wasting time getting prepared to do her tasks, instead of doing them at once as she should do.
In the village, Mr. Thornton kept a store where he sold fruits of all kinds, including berries (莓子) when in season. One morning he said to Amy, “Well, Amy, I noticed some fine, blackberries on Mr. Green’s farm today. He said that anybody was welcome to them. I will pay you 13 cents a kilogram for all you pick for me.”
Amy was excited about the thought of making some money to help her mom, so she quickly ran home to get a basket to hold the berries. Then she thought she would like to know how much money she would get if she picked five kilograms. After finding out that she would get 65 cents, she started to dream big, “If I should pick a dozen kilograms, how much should I make then?”
“Dear me,” she said to himself, after thinking a while, “I should make a dollar and fifty-six cents!”
It took her some time to dream bigger, and then it was so near lunchtime that she had to stay at home until the afternoon.
As soon as lunch was over, she took her basket and hurried to the farm. Some boys had been there before lunch, and all the ripe blackberries were picked. She could not find half a kilogram to fill her basket. Then she thought of what her teacher often told her, “Do your task at once; then think about it. One doer is worth 100 dreamers.”

Most American teenagers can’t wait to kick away their “metal mouth” nickname (绰号). They count down the days they can finally take their braces (牙箍) off. However, trendy (追求时髦的) teenagers in Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand can’t wait to get them on, even if they don’t need them.
Braces are the latest teenage fashion trend in Southeast Asia. Having a mouthful of metal has become so popular with Asian teens that there have been reports of many teens wearing fake (假冒的) braces. There even appear cheaper do-it-yourself braces such as “Hello Kitty” or “Mickey Mouse” for a price of around $100.
Braces are considered as a sign of wealth in Southeast Asia. A real set of braces costs around $1,200, which is a large amount for the country with a GDP of $345 billion, compared to the US which had a GDP of $1, 506 Trillion (a Trillion is 1, 000 billion) last year.
While Asian teens may think their colorful fake braces are cool, experts say that these trendy fashion braces can cause illness and even lead to death. According to the New York Daily News, fake fashion braces have already been connected to the deaths of two teens in Thailand. A 17-year-old boy in the northeast city of Khon Kaen died from heart failure caused by a thyroid infection (甲状腺感染) from a pair of fake braces. Police also connected the death of another 14-year-old girl in Chonburi to a pair of fashion braces she had bought from an illegal (非法的) shop. Although the government is giving warnings about fake braces, the trend has been going strong for at least four years. What’s worse, the trend for fake braces shows no sign of slowing down.

①Childhood is a wonderful time full of fun for us. Many old people still remember when they were young, they often played games like hide-and-seek and chess. In the past, they played games to guide children to get along well with each other. They not only make children happy, but also exercise their mind and body. But now some children spend most of their time in front of the computer, playing video games.
②A recent survey found that children between 8 and 12 spend at least 13 hours a week playing video games or “gaming” in some countries. Boys of this age spend even more time, almost 16 hours a week. Although some people will say that gaming is helpful, it brings many problems as well.
③One big problem is that kids who spend most of their time on games might have difficulty communicating with real people. They might have trouble sharing and resolving problems because they do not practice these skills when sitting alone at a computer.
④Another problem is about health. Game players usually sit for hours without doing any exercise. And they might not eat healthily. As a result, they might be out of shape.
⑤Next, game players might have trouble with their lessons. Some of them spend more time playing games than working on their homework. ______
⑥Finally, it is always possible that the gamers become addicted (成瘾的). Some people play four or five hours a day or even all day. This happened to a 28-year-old man. He spent about 50 hours playing an online game without sleeping or eating well. He died while gaming!

36.What does the underlined word “They” in Paragraph 1 refer to (指代)?
A.The old people. B.The games. C.The children. D.The children’s words.
37.How long do children of 8 to 12 spend playing video games in a week?
A.At least 13 hours. B.More than 16 hours.
C.About 26 hours. D.About 32 hours.
38.How many problems about playing video games are mentioned in the passage?
A.Two. B.Three. C.Four. D.Five.
39.Which of the following is the right sentence for the blank in Paragraph 5?
A.A few days later, they might become ill.
B.Soon, they might lose their friends.
C.In a week, they might stop playing games.
D.In the end, they might get lower grades at school.
40.What does the writer want to tell us by writing this passage?
A.Video gaming has quite a lot of advantages.

How similar are language and music?
Language is part of our daily lives, no matter where we live in the world. Similarly, music is a part of many people’s lives, whether it is played on the radio on your drive to work or played in a concert. Both language and music play important roles in our culture and here are some of their similarities.
Both language and music have a writing system.
In English we record language using the alphabet(字母表), which is a collection of letters. Similarly, we use notes to keep a record of music. Just as you are reading this collection of letters and find meaning in it, musicians read notes and create meaning in the form of music which we can hear. So just as you read English, you can also read music. By writing pieces of text or music, we are able to share experiences through time. I can read or hear the ideas of someone who lived hundreds of years ago, which is really quite exciting.
Both vary with culture.
You can make a good guess at where someone is from by listening to the language they use. In the same way, we know that styles of music are different around the world, giving us the opportunity to explore many different cultures through their music and providing us with music for every situation. This also means that there is something for everyone! Even if you don’t like Britpop melodies(旋律), you may love the energy of Latin American salsa music.
Both share emotion.
How do you know I am angry? Of course you may be able to see it on my face, but you will know for sure through my words. Similarly, music can sound angry, sad or happy. Music can show you exactly how the composer(作曲家)was or is feeling, and allow us to share that emotion. When you feel happy, you may want to sing and dance to a happy song to celebrate your happiness, while you probably want to listen to sad music when you are feeling down. I think we have all used music to express or process our emotions, often combining it with language in the form of song lyrics(歌词).
Similarities 56 language and music
Having a writing system
◆ Language is 57 with the alphabet—a collection of letters expressing plenty of meanings and ideas.
◆ Music uses notes for 58 a record.
◆ Language and music are written and heard to share 59 through time.
Varying with 60
◆ Music may have a local colour because of its culture.
◆ Those different styles of music 61 us music for every situation.
Sharing emotion
◆ The words will 62 tell the writer’s feelings and music shows us the 63 feelings as well.
◆ We can express or process our emotions by combining music with language in the 64 of song lyrics.
Conclusion: Both language and music are of great 65 to our culture.
Schools are using computers more and more today. When children s 66 primary school at the age of six or seven, there will be computers in their class and they will quickly learn how to use them. The q 67 is, should parents buy their children their own home computer as soon as they start school?
If parents decide to do this, the children can practice their computer s 68 at home. This will help them learn faster at school and as a result they will do b 69 . What’s more, young children really enjoy using computers and can spend hours playing h 70 with them. Another reason for buying a computer for your child early on is that young children learn to use them more easily than older children.
But there are reasons a 71 this. Although children use computers in their primary classrooms, it is not necessary for parents to buy them their own computers. Young children need to be active and play o 72 . If they spend too long in front of a computer, it can be harmful.
It can damage their eyes. They also f 73 to learn how to get on with other children. What’s more, a computer does not become really important for school work until children are much older.
It is t 74 that young children of six or seven learn to use computers quickly and enjoy using them but other things are more important at that age. P 75 the conclusion is that parents do not need to buy a computer for their young child, as there are more important things. However, if there is already a computer at home, the child can be allowed to use it for short periods only.

1.C
此处修饰动词词组went out of the classroom,故用副词noisily,选C。
3.B
so will I我也;Neither do I我也不;Nor shall I我也不;So I will我的确。
It's the same with.
A. Both两者都;B.
one/ones 代替前文出现的单复数可数名词,that同类替代,但不是同一个,单数名词时相当于the one;those 相当于the ones。故选D。
7.C
固定短语“be good for”意思是“对……有好处”,首先排除D,因为maybe是副词;Running and swimming作主语,是指两种行为,为第三人称复数形式,故答案选C。
10.B
【详解】句意:请问您可以花一些时间把它解释给我们听吗?
sometimes有时; some time一段时间; some times好几次; sometime某时;根据句意应该是一段时间,第二空表示“给我们解释”,用介词to,故选B。
11.A
find it+adj+to do sth“发现做某事怎么样”,it作形式宾语,真正宾语是to do sth,故选A。
12.B
A项中it多余;C和D项少了it;结合句意可知,B项符合要求;“how to do it”表示“如何去做”。故选B。
13.D
what to do with处理什么,what是do with的宾语;how to solve怎么解决,其后加宾语;how to deal with怎么处理,其后加宾语;how to do 怎么做,其后加宾语。

Dear Dr. Know,
After I finish my homework, I often go online to chat with my friends.

Later, with the encouragement of my teacher, I now enjoy sports, especially playing basketball. So I am very slim and healthy. I used to have a lot of homework and finished very late every day.
