(2024·陕西西安·二模)In the Ming Dynasty, in order to protect the country and people, the emperor decided to rebuild the Great Wall. This is because the Great Wall is not just a wall. The walls were connected by a system (系统) of watchtowers. These were not only used to stop the enemy, but also to communicate with the capital by signals (信号). However, building a wall with huge stones seemed to be impossible at that time.
At that time, the building of Jiayuguan required millions of stones of the same size. People found that neither men nor horses could carry the stones because they were too heavy.
Winter was coming. The workers were worried about whether they can finish the work on time. They gathered every day to discuss the way to carry them. One day, a worker accidentally poured water onto the road, he found the water quickly became ice. He stepped on the ice and almost fell down. Thanks to this “mistake”, he came up with a perfect way—to build an “ice” road. In the end, this way was quickly put into practice. On the ice road, every stone was transported (运输) to the mountain easily. They finally solved the problem with their wisdom and diligence (勤奋).
The building of the Great Wall was not without its challenges, but the workers’ strong will and creativity got over all of them. Today, the Great Wall is not used to protect the country any more, but it is always the symbol of our nation’s spirit. It is the Great Wall that gives us the power to create and the courage to move on and get over all difficulties. We’ll be fearless, and we’ll work together to create the new “Great Wall” of our time.
4.Why was it difficult to build the Great Wall in ancient times?
A.Because there was much ice on the wall.
B.Because there were less people do this work.
C.Because it was hard for people to move heavy stones.
D.Because the weather at that time was very terrible.
5.The underlined word “gathered” probably means “________” in the passage.
A.get together B.keep together C.live together D.act together
6.Which of the following can best describe the workers who built the Grate Wall?
A.Strict and wise. B.Shy and patient.
C.Honest and friendly. D.Hard-working and smart.

(23-24九年级上·江西宜春·期末)Nowadays the pollution of the sea is becoming an increasingly serious problem. How can we reduce the pollution in the sea and make the underwater environment better? Scientists in Norway have created an underwater robot, which can help a lot.
The robot is 45 kg in weight and uses special cameras to get 3D images (图像). It can discover different kinds of pollution at the bottom of the sea. It will help clean-up teams find the areas where there is rubbish and then they can spend most of their time and money removing (清除) the most harmful materials.
The researchers put their work to the test in a bay (海湾) in the city of Bergen. First, the robot swam up and down two meters above the seabed, collecting information. Then a computer turned the information into a map, which showed different rubbish materials in different colors. Thousands of objects were discovered in the bay, including bottles, metals, plastics, etc. “Bergen is a place where different industries come together, and the city is quite old, so there’s a huge amount of rubbish,” said Trygve Olav Fossum, one of the researchers. “We think the rubbish in the bay weighs 150 tons to 300 tons.” It is not always possible to remove everything. Some things are more harmful, so it’s more important to clear them from the sea.
“Glass isn’t really polluting the sea,” said Fossum. “So if you know there’s an area with a lot of glass, you don’t need to worry much about that and you can pay more attention to the things that are putting heavy metals into the environment.” The maps will be used to help the clean-up teams locate (定位) the most harmful materials so that they can remove them first.
Thanks to the development of the science and technology, the underwater environment can be improved a lot. As well as helping to deal with pollution, the robot can also show where creatures like starfish are on the seabed.

(23-24九年级上·河南鹤壁·期末)Did you know that paper was first invented in China? Before paper was invented, people used to write on bones, turtle shells and bamboo pieces. But it was hard to write on them and even harder to carry them.
Papermaking is one of the greatest inventions by Chinese. 105 A.D.is often considered as the year in which papermaking was invented. The raw material (原材料) for the first paper came from silk rags (破布). It took several steps to make a piece of paper. First, the rags were put in water, then boiled, and next hit hard many times to form a pulp (浆状物). A thin bamboo screen was then dipped (蘸) into the pulp and became covered with a thin film of fiber (一层纤维). The screen fit inside am old (模具), which was used to press out the useless water. Finally, the screen was left to dry on a heated wall. After it was dry, a piece of paper could be peeled off the screen.
In fact, the papermaking technique was improved by Cai Lun, an official at the court of the Handy nasty. Cai Lun Paper was much lighter and cheaper than the materials used before. During the Handy nasty, people who worked for the government needed large amounts of paper, so it was produced in factories.
After Cai Lun invented paper, the paper technique went all around the world. Most of the papermaking knowledge spread through the Silk Road. The papermaking skills were first spread to Korea and Japan, then spread to the Arab area and Europe. It is exciting to see that all of the papermaking from around the world started with one Chinese man. (23-24九年级上·四川内江·期末)Getting electricity has always been a problem for the 173 people living in Nuevo Saposoa, a small village in Peru, South America. However, things went from bad to worse in March 2015 after heavy rains broke the only power cable (电力电缆) in the area. The villagers were forced to use oil lamps (灯), which are not only expensive but also dangerous because of the terrible smell they produce.
Luckily, researchers at the University of Technology (UT) in Lima, Peru heard about their problem and found a wonderful way. They made a lamp that can be powered by plants and soil (土壤). Both can be easily found in the Amazonian rainforest where the village lies. The lamp takes energy from a plant growing in a wooden box and uses it to light up a LED light bulb (灯泡).
While that may sound amazing and even impossible, the science behind the idea is quite simple. As plants create their food, they produce waste. And the waste returns to the soil. Tiny animals in the soil eat the waste and they produce electrons—the parts of electrical energy. The UT team put special sticks inside the soil to get the energy and keep it in the lamp for later use. The researchers say a single charge (充电) can make a 50w LED light work for two hours—enough time for local villagers to get their evening work done.
The university gave ten Plant Lamps to the villagers of Nuevo Saposoa in October 2015. So far, they have been a huge success! Elmer Ramirez, the UT professor who invented the lamp, believes the Plant Lamp could help improve the lives of many people, especially small rainforest villages. 42% of them have no electricity.

7th floor-Strawberries. 15th floor-Carrots. It sounds like you’re in the lift of a supermarket, but actually this describes a vertical farm (垂直农场)!
Vertical farming means growing plants on different levels in tall buildings. There is running water, and sunlight enters through glass windows with LED lights for plants that don’t receive direct sunlight at some points of the day. Also, farmers in vertical farms have controlled the temperature and humidity (湿度). So no matter what the weather is like outside, the plants can continue growing! It’s possible to grow crops (庄稼) all year round.
Vertical farming began as an idea at Columbia University in New York City in 1999. Dickson Despommier, a professor, challenged his students to come up with ways to feed the population of Manhattan by growing food in the city. One idea was to use rooftop (外屋顶) gardens, but that could only feed 2% of the population. Out of nowhere, Despommier suggested that people could grow plants in tall buildings in the city. Then vertical farming was born!
Today, vertical farming is a reality and it’s growing in popularity. As is known to us, the population of the world will become larger and larger, so we will need more food. Cutting down forests to grow crops would do harm to the environment, so vertical farms can be a solution.
Despommier says that a 30-storey 2-hectare (30层两公顷的) vertical farm can grow the same amount of crops in a year as a normal 1,000-hectare farm! In 2012, the world’s first commercial (商业的) vertical farm opened in Singapore. Today, there are many vertical farms around the world.
31.When you are in a vertical farm, you will have a feeling of ________.
A.staying in a forest B.staying in the sun
C.being in a lift of a supermarket D.being outside a tall building
32.Farmers in vertical farms grow crops without ________.
A.a lot of LED lights B.running water
C.comfortable temperature D.depending on the weather
33.According to Paragraph 4, we can learn that ________.
A.vertical farms are large enough to make food
B.the conditions in vertical farms can be controlled
C.it is cheaper for farmers to grow crops in vertical farms
D.using vertical farms to grow crops is meaningful and popular
34.Which of the following can show the structure of the passage?
