In show business, well-known movie stars are rich and widely respected. For the rest of us, however, it’s a different story. Here is a typical day in a film studio.
My alarm clock went off at 5:20 am. Why did I have to get up so early? Well, I had to arrive at the studio at 7 and it’s an hour’s drive away. The morning traffic was slow, but I got there on time. After I parked my car, an assistant director led me to the canteen for breakfast.
Before I even finished up my coffee, a costumer rushed in to measure me for a new blouse. Then, I headed to the makeup department. Forty minutes later, with a fresh look, I headed to the scene.
The director and some other actors were already there. I spoke with the director about the scene. I found out that he had changed the lines that I had stayed up late the night before to remember. We rehearsed the scene several times. After that, the technicians had to set up the lights. While I waited for them, I tried to remember my new lines.
About twenty minutes later, I got to the scene again. “Action!” the director ordered. One of the other actors said her lines as she walked towards me. I started to say mine. “Cut!” the director said suddenly.
Did I do anything wrong? No. One of the lights went out. The technicians repaired it as soon as possible.
Then, we started again from the beginning. Luckily, nothing went wrong this time.
Soon, it was time for lunch. In the afternoon, we shot one more scene. Finally, at 6 pm, I could go home.
There was no applause (掌声). This is a film studio, not a theater. But it’s a wonderful experience to make friends with other young actors. That’s why I love my job!

If our time is our most valuable thing, maybe we should be surprised how willingly we waste it.
I’ve read when smokers give up the habit, their lungs (肺) begin to repair themselves. So could it be true that our brains are boring by hours of phone use?
One day, something in me touched me and I decided to stop my phone addiction (上瘾) habit to live my life fully.
Of course, a complete change was impossible because the phone was part of our daily life. My new rules allowed for basic uses such as texting, calling, checking the news and making planned searches. Also, online shopping and social media (媒体) use should be limited. But my No. 1 rule was simple: Do not pick up the phone as a reflex (反射动作) to kill boredom.
Reducing my screen time has caused a lot, which is quite interesting. Just a few days after giving up the habit, I’ve read two books and I’ve had more creative ideas for writing projects in the last week than I had in the last year. More interestingly, I’ve also had more active communication with someone I don’t know, whether it’s giving out a praise, laughing at something funny, or taking an extra moment to hold open a door.
We’ve given the little computers in our hands far more of our time and attention than they should. They’ve become crutches (拐杖), giving us excuses. But the funny thing is, when we put them down, we’ll fill our time in a wise way.
And we may just discover a new enjoyment of old pleasures or new ones, which makes our brains fresh and new instead of being weak in ways we’d almost forgotten.
