Was my dad afraid of that man? surprised ➲ Task 2(Worksheet) Read and find out Paul’s thoughts and feelings. This was strange. ‘Well done, Dad.’ confused proud Paul’s dad set a good example for us of how to deal with trouble wisely and safely. And the author of the diary, Paul also admires his father’s method, can you find a sentence in his diary to express his admiration? Yes, that’s “well done, Dad’ what’s Paul’s feeling when his father helped the women tourists catch the thief. right, he is proud of his father. As we can see,we can also write about our feelings and thoughts in a diary, so can you find other similar expressions in Paul’s diary? Please take out your worksheet, read through the diary and try to complete the blanks about Paul’s thoughts and feelings. (停顿1分钟,音乐) All right, Have you found how Paul felt when he wrote This was strange, right, he felt surprised. and have you found the sentence to show Paul was doubtful? Right, Paul wrote Was my dad really afraid of that man? Of course not, his dad was brave and smart. but at that time it was really doubtful to Paul, why did Paul want to know if his dad was afraid of that man, I think because he also wanted to help the women tourists but he was a teenager, he didn’t know what to do with such a trouble, We can learn that Paul also has a sense of justice. 14 15 Why didn’t Paul’s dad stop the thief at the ferry station? I think Paul’s dad had already planned how to help the women tourists. He tried to find the chance to call the police. He didn’t want the young man to run away like his fellows. Alice In my opinion, Paul’s dad wanted to protect his son and other people. It’s unwise to fight or argue with the thief directly in public. Sam Try to help people in trouble in a safe and clever way. While-reading Be kind but careful. Think about the questions. According to Paul’s diary, his dad helped the women tourists deal with the trouble and caught the thief, but why didn’t he stop the thief at the ferry station? Now please think about it. (停顿1分钟,音乐) Have you got any ideas? Alice, what’s on your mind? Good idea, Alice, what about you, Sam? Well done, class, I totally agree with your ideas. As we all know, Paul’s father didn’t just witness the trouble, he acutally did something to solve it, all he did and all he said teach us a lesson. He didn’t stop the thief at the ferry station because maybe the thief would have gun or a knife, he would hurt other people, so we should rememeber that When someone is in trouble, we should try to help them. We needn’t put ourselves in danger, we can often help others in a safe and clever way. 15 16 While-reading Read and analyze Paul’s dad’s personalities. warm-hearted helpful wise thoughtful ‘What’s going on?’ ‘Wait’ ‘Let’s take the next ferry.’ ‘I want to report a theft…’ When the young man stole the purse from one of the women tourists, I think they must be very worried and anxious, what did they do in this situation? Besides the women tourists , Paul and his dad, there were also the crowd at the ferry station, what did they do when they witnessed the theft, did they do something to deal with the trouble like Paul’s dad? What’s their reactions when they were facing the trouble? Let’s find out the different reactions. We have circled what Paul’s dad did in the last lesson, now, can you find some words he said to each action? (音乐,停顿30秒) Here is what we found in the diary. When Paul’s dad moved through the crowd and said quietly to the woman, he said ‘ what’s going on?’ that implies he cared about what happened to the women tourists When he decided to take the next ferry, he said ‘ wait, let’s take the next ferry’ I think he must have his reason not to take the same ferry with the others, and please pay attention to the words quietly and quickly, these advs shows maybe he had a good idea to solve the trouble at that time. when he went to a shop nearby and made the phone call to the police, he said ‘I want to report a theft. The man is on No.3 ferry now. It just left a few minutes ago, Please meet the ferry’ All he did and said was really impressive, what about the crowd and the two women tourists? what did the crowd do when Paul’s dad moved through the crowd and talked to the woman? They just stared at the three people and no one knew what was happening. When Paul’s dad decided to take the next ferry, what did they do? They went abroad. So the crowd just watched and did nothing, Compare to their reaction, what do you think of Paul’s dad? I think he is warm-hearted and helpful, right? Now, let’s look at the women tourists, what about their reactions? when they meet a theft, they shouted to the young man in a public place, and when the man hurried abroad, they went after him. We can felt their helplessness and worries, they had absolutely no idea what to do in this situaion. Compare to them, we can find Paul’s dad was actually wise and thoughtful. Do you agree? 16 Dear Kurt Yesterday something (1)__________ happened to us. Dad and I heard a big (2)__________ when we were waiting for the ferry.
