Officials have unveiled the gold, silver and bronze medals that will be awarded at this summer’s Olympic games in Paris, and each one contains a unique souvenir: a fragment of waste iron from the Eiffel Tower.
“It’s the opportunity for the athletes to bring back a piece of Paris with them,” Thierry Reboul, creative director of Paris 2024, told reporters last week. “The absolute symbol of Paris and France is the Eiffel Tower.”
The Eiffel Tower opened in 1889 and during the later repair work, some of the original iron was cut off and preserved over time. Now, some of those preserved metal fragments have found new homes.
Each new Olympic medal features a piece of Eiffel Tower iron—though the signature “Eiffel Tower brown” paint has been removed. These pieces have been shaped into hexagons (六边形),which is the “shape of France”. Besides, there are words “Paris 2024”, the Olympic rings and the Games logo, which looks like a flame or the face of a woman with a bob haircut.
How did they think of such an idea? Joachim Roncin, head of design at the Paris Games organizing committee told the press, “We talked about the design many times and realized that there’s one symbol known across the world, which is the Eiffel Tower. We said to ourselves,’ ‘Hey, what if we approached the Eiffel Tower Operating Company to see if it’s possible to get a bit of the Eiffel Tower to integrate into the medal?”
When the Eiffel Tower Operating Company agreed to volunteer pieces of original iron, “the dream became reality,” adds Roncin.
The medals, designed by the luxury Paris jewelry house Chaumet, make people think of the Eiffel Tower in several other ways. The pieces of iron are secured by what looks like special nails that hold the structure together, and the medals’ ribbons are decorated with patterns of the tower’s latticework structure.
The iron fragments are set in recycled silver, gold and bronze disks. Over 5,000 medals are being made.

Want to know all the ins-and-outs regarding the Paris 2024 Olympics? Then you’ve come to the right place! Below you will find all the information about the new Olympic sports.
Olympic skateboarding
Who will follow in the footsteps of Momiji Nishiya, the first Olympic skateboarding champion, who was crowned at the last Games at the age of 13? The answer will be revealed in Paris this summer. Speed, technique, mastery of the board will be required to successfully perform the most beautiful tricks.
Olympic sports climbing
With its second time entering the Olympics, sports climbing has three branches: Speed, Bouldering (抱石攀岩) and Lead. Speed is all about the speed of climbing. Bouldering is all about climbing a boulder on a wall and Lead requires athletes to climb a difficult route 20 meters high.
Olympic surfing
The Olympics will be held in Paris, but what about Olympic surfing? There is one venue (场地) that is literally on the other side of the world. The location Teahupoo, on the island of Tahiti, is where Olympic surfing will take place. This island is part of French Polynesia, between Australia and South America.
Olympic breakdancing
Breakdancing is the new Olympic sport that will make its first appearance in Paris 2024. How to establish a grading system without taking away the artistic freedom at the same time? The points should be based on creativity and musicality, a gray area that depends a lot on feeling and thus has a lot of subjectivity to it.

The design of the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic torch (火炬) was shown on July 25, marking almost a year until the opening ceremony (典礼) of the Paris Olympic Games.
The torch, measuring 70 centimeters and weighing 3.3 pounds, is made with lightweight radiant steel and is known for its champagne color, a color of French white wine.
Mathieu Lehanneur, the designer of the torch said that he drew inspiration from three Paris 2024 symbols-equality, water and peacefulness. Equality is shown by perfect balance. Peacefulness is shown by the gentleness of the curves. The lower half features a relief pattern that copies the movement of the River Seine, along which the opening ceremony will be held.
It will be the first torch in the history of the Games to be used for both the Olympics and Paralympics. Past designs have shared similarities but are different in shape and color. This is part of the organizing committee’s plan to “build bridges between the Olympic and Paralympic Games”, Paris 2024’s president Tony Estanguet said in a statement.
Equality means putting the same ambition into organising the Paralympic Games as the Olympic Games. Following on from the medals to the mascots, the Olympic and Paralympic Games will share the same torch design.
Equality in the Paris 2024 project is also reflected in the strong promise to equality in the Olympic Games: For the first time in the history of the Games, as many women as men will take part in the competitions. Reflecting this desire for peace, the torch, with its curves and rounded lines, is filled with gentleness. The design of the torch delivers generosity and unity.
“Such a project is a dream for a designer, because it’s a project that connects something symbolic and technical in one, for a big moment,” Lehanneur said.

Booksellers have run their trade along the banks of the River Seine for about 450 years, their time-beaten green boxes a Paris tradition as treasured as freshly baked baguettes (法棍面包).
But this piece of French history is now at the center of a storm after the city’s police ordered that the booksellers and their stalls (排位) be relocated for “safety reasons” to make way for the opening ceremony of the Summer Olympic Games in 2024.
One plan was for booksellers’ boxes to remain in place but they must be examined by the police first and sealed off (封锁) during the Olympic event, which would attract millions of visitors to the city—including many who would potentially visit their stalls. Another plan, considered even worse by booksellers, was to move the boxes elsewhere. As booksellers pit on, many bores have been is place for 30 or 40 years. Most are mused and all their parts are not strong enough.
Although the city’s government has offered to relocate the bookstalls and cover the cost of the move as well as repairing damaged stalls, booksellers say the lack of consultation over a decision affecting a Paris landmark has left them fearful about the future.
Plus, there’s concern about what will happen when the Olympics are over. “Are they even going to offer us the same spots again after the games?” asked a bookseller. “I’m afraid that we get our boxes back either in a year, or maybe never, or with someone else’s things in them,” he said.
Booksellers worried that not only would moving the boxes be much more expensive for the capital, but a relocated book market wouldn’t work. “The stalls only make sense when they are on the banks of the Seine,” they said. The attraction and culture of the boxes is their age-worn character, their poetic shades of green.

A.Covering the cost of repairing old bookstalls.
B.Building a new landmark for the bookstalls.
C.Replacing old bookstalls with new ones for free.
D.Attracting more customers for the bookstalls.
14.What idea do booksellers hold about their stalls?
A.They are much too expensive. B.They must lie along the Seine.
C.They must be painted green. D.They are not a Paris landmark.
15.What is the best title for the text?
A.Paris Bookstalls Being Moved for Safety Reasons

During the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, there was a lot of talk about the environmental efforts taken. Athletes slept on beds made from recycled cardboard. The medals were produced out of old appliances such as smartphones and laptops. Over 90% of Japanese cities, towns and villages participated in the two-year effort to collect recycled materials to produce 5000 medals. Eighty tons of small electrical devices were collected to make this project successful.
With the 2024 Olympics Games underway in Paris, new environmental efforts are coming into play. Observers will sit on chairs made of plastic recycled from local bins. This decision was made due to a lack of unused raw materials to make new seats, so the eco-construction firm Le Pave turned to make the seats out of waste. Around 11,000 seats will be made from recycled materials.
The plastic collection for Paris 2024 has been carried out in the region’s schools, and over five million coloured bottle caps have been recovered. Moreover, 80% of the 100 tons of recycled plastic needed to make the seats come from the yellow bins collections. This is all part of the Paris 2024 “zero waste” strategy to limit single-use plastic usage and encourage a circular economy.
The Olympic Games organizers are planning to make the Paris 2024 Games the greenest Olympic Games yet. They intend to employ a carbon-neutral approach that will lessen the climate impact of the Games by predicting, avoiding, reducing and balancing emissions and encouraging others to get involved. The Summer Games have emitted 3.6 million tons of carbon emissions in previous years. The Paris 2024 Games has set a carbon budget of 1.5 million tons which includes the emissions from construction, transportation and operations of the Games.
These plans are ambitious but are achievable. If Paris 2024 successfully reduces emissions and promotes a circular economy, it might set the standard for future Olympic and Paralympic Games, regardless of where they are held.
22.What were the 2020 Olympics medals made from?
A.Raw metal. B.Recycled cardboard.
C.Reused plastic. D.Used electronic devices.
23.What is the purpose of the Paris 2024 “zero waste” strategy?
A.To stop carbon emissions. B.To make seats for athletes.

It’s time for people to pick up their boom boxes and dust off their sneakers. Breaking, or competitive break dancing, is going for the gold.
On Dec 7, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced that breaking would be an Olympic sport at the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics. It will be the latest modern sport to be added to the Games. IOC President Thomas Bach said that the new addition of breaking could help the Olympics event be “more youthful”. “We had a clear priority, and this was to introduce sports particularly popular among the younger generation,” Bach said. “And also to take into consideration the urbanization of sport.”
Breaking was originally part of early hip-hop culture in New York in the 1970s. In the decades since, it has spread globally, enjoying huge popularity beyond the US and particularly across Europe and Asia. Though breaking is often categorized as a style of street dance, it more easily lends itself to the field of sports than other styles for the competitive nature.
“Back in the Bronx in New York, when it first started, it was always neighborhoods of kids just battling each other,” 26-year-old break-dancer Victor Montalvo told USA Today. “That’s how they did it back in the day.” “Breaking competitions typically consist of one-on-one battles in which one competitor challenges his or her rival with different moves and the other responds. It’s a sport/art just as physically demanding as high-intensity dancing and acrobatics”, Montalvo added.
But as an art, breaking also features coordination and creativity. Some combinations of moves can be practiced, but much of a round is improvised. Combining vitality and creativity, breaking is accepted by young dancers across the world who are motivated by the prospect of representing their countries at the world’s biggest sporting event.

B.To introduce a new Olympic event — breaking.
C.To throw light on the rules of breaking.
D.To make a brief historical review of breaking.

People in Paris, France are growing concerned about a problem that has worried people for centuries: bedbugs, which are small, flat insects that live in beds and other places.
With more and more reports of bedbugs being found, the French government is worried about the problem. Millions of people will be traveling to Paris this summer for the 2024 Olympics. France doesn’t want the country to leave a bad impression by letting its visitors get bitten by bedbugs. No one likes bedbugs, but it’s important to remember that they can be upsetting and leave itchy bites behind, but they do not spread diseases. They’ve been around for thousands of years, and even found in old Egyptian tombs.
After World War II, people began using dangerous chemicals to kill them, which caused bedbugs and many other pests to become much less common. But in the past 20 or 30 years, bedbugs have become common again. For one thing, now many bedbugs aren’t affected by most of the chemicals that used to kill them. Some people think that the bedbugs that are left may be ones that the chemicals don’t work on. For another, people are traveling more these days. Bedbugs can hide in tiny spaces, including inside suitcases. When people bring their suitcases to new places, bedbugs can spread to new areas — or from those areas back home.
In France, bedbugs are a long-standing problem. Jean-Michel Berenger, a scientist who studies insects in Marseille, says, “Every late summer we see a big increase in bedbugs.” That’s mainly from people returning after traveling. And now, in addition to reports of bedbugs in hotels and apartments, there’re also reports of them being found in other places: on seats at movie theaters, on long-distance trains, on the Paris subway, and at the country’s busiest airport. French officials are making sure Paris’ apartments, along with hotels and other places where tourists stay, are safe and clean.

Some events have been added to the 2024 Olympics, with surfing, breakdancing and sport climbing among the recent additions. With them come a group of terms that are foreign to the French language. For some French-language purists, it’s too much to bear to rely on English to praise surfers on their “noseriding”-standing on the front of the board. They’ve decided they need a French solution.
The French government has created a team of language experts devoted to promoting the national language. They will meet periodically over the next couple of years to identify and define new sports terms. The French battle against the influence of other languages isn’t new. In 1994, the Toubon law was passed, forcing the use of French in all government publications, contracts and advertisements. Yet it contained several loopholes, which allow brands and companies to extensively use English. As a result, anglicisms are becoming more obvious.
Julie Neveux, linguistics professor at Sorbonne University in Paris, said anglicisms are “sometimes estimated at just under 5% of the present vocabulary, but they are disturbing because they show that we follow an economic and cultural model other than our own.” They are particularly present in sports competitions and events, during which athletes from around the world are used to communicating in English. “Sport was one of the first areas to be globalized,” said sports historian Michael Attali, “This phenomenon has strengthened English as the official language.” Despite their best efforts, no committee has successfully prevented English from infiltrating everyday language. By the time French officials agreed on a translation and its definition, the English version has already spread throughout the nation, “Similar committees have been put in place in the past, but nothing has changed so far,” said Attali.
“There are far fewer anglicisms in French than there are French words in English.” said Neveux, adding these exchanges should not be seen as a threat. “All living languages exist by borrowing from each other. Languages only exist thanks to their impurity.”
34.What will a team of language experts do?
A.Promote the spread of French in the world.
B.Decide upon some new sports terms.
C.Bring English and French together.
D.Make French much purer.

A.English is more popular than French.
B.All languages should be preserved.
C.The exchanges between two languages can be avoided.
D.Neveux is positive about the impurity of language.
37.Where can we probably read the passage?
A.In a newspaper. B.In a travel guide.
C.In a biography. D.In a fiction novel.

The Summer Olympic Games this year are in Paris, France, which does not have an ocean. So, how do organizers plan to present competition in the sport of surfing? They are taking that Olympic event in a small coastal village called Teahupo’o in the South Pacific country of French Polynesia. Hundreds of people are expected to visit Teahupo’o to watch the sport, as the surfers go out onto the famous waves from July 27 to August 4.
Proposed preparations for the event included building temporary housing, roads, and even a large structure out on the water. The work called for drilling into a coral reef. However, opposition to the plans quickly grew. Environmentalists, locals and surfers joined forces to protect Teahupo’o’s culture, its corals and other sea life.
For locals, Teahupo’o beach was a“secret spot” with a special energy known as “mana”, and they want that special quality protected. There are concerns that a week of Olympic competition there could destroy the “mana”.“It was too much for us, a big change,” said Levy, a Tahitian surfer and a volunteere on a local environmental organization.
Some people worry that the drilling into the reef will disrupt the ecosystem and attract a dangerous algae (海藻). If fish eat the algae, people who eat the fish can become sick.“The water is where we get our dinner,” 22-year-old Maitei, a spearfisher catching fish to feed his family, said.
Local Tahitians’ worry were confirmed when a boat working on some Olympic construction hit a piece of the reef and broke it. “In Polynesian culture, gods are everywhere in nature, in the coral, in the ocean. If we break a coral, we break a home,” Cindy Otcenasek, a local official, said.
No new buildings or roads are welcome for the locals. And the organizers are adjusting their plans as a result. For example, they will not be building any Olympic housing. Instead, athletes will stay on a nearby boat. Homes of locals will serve other Olympic housing needs. Judges will watch the competition from the platform. The whole world is ready for the great events and the impact.
38.Why is the 2024 Olympics surfing to be held in Teahupo’o?
A.It is the sister city of Paris. B.It is the best choice for the sport.
C.It aims to develop its tourism. D.It has favorable geographic location.
39.What makes Teahupo’o beach special to local Tahitians?
A.The rich fishing resources. B.The surfing spots.
C.The power of mana. D.The unique corals.
40.Why are some local people opposed to the Olympic plans in Teahupo’o?
A.They are worried the event will damage the environment.
B.They want more construction and development in the area.
C.They think the event will bring too many tourists.
D.They don’t like the sport of surfing.
41.What are the organizers doing to address the local concerns in Teahupo’o?
A.Building new roads and housing for the event.
B.Cancelling the Olympic surfing competition.
C.Relocating the event to a different location.
D.Adjusting their plans to minimize the impact.

C.To collect coloured bottle caps. D.To restrict single-use plastic usage.
24.What do the underlined words “carbon neutral approach” in paragraph 4 refer to?
A.Limitation to single-use plastics. B.Reduction of carbon emissions.
C.Promotion of recycling in school. D.Encouragement of a circular economy.
25.What is the author’s attitude to the plans for the Paris 2024 Games?
A.Favorable. B.Intolerant. C.Doubtful. D.Unclear.

30.Why does the French government start dealing with bedbugs?
A.They are spreading diseases. B.They may affect a big event.
C.They bite more and more people. D.They exist in France for too long.

A.The places where bedbugs often live. B.The ways that bedbugs travel globally.
C.The reasons why bedbugs come back. D.The fact that bedbugs beat chemicals.

A.Bedbugs can be easily got rid of.
B.The bedbug problem is getting worse and worse.
C.Bedbugs live mainly in hotels and apartments.

35.What’s the result of previous efforts to stop English from infiltrating French?
A.Unimportant. B.Successful.
C.Fruitless. D.Unmentioned.
36.What can we infer from the last paragraph?
