Do you find getting up in the morning so difficult that it’s painful? This might be called laziness, but Dr. Kleitman has a new explanation. He has proved that everyone has a daily energy cycle.
During the hours when you labor through your work you may say that you’re “hot”. That’s true. The time of day when you feel most energetic is when your cycle of body temperature is at its peak. For some people the peak comes during the forenoon. For others it comes in the afternoon or evening. No one has discovered why this is so, but it leads to such a familiar monologue as: “Get up, John. You’ll be late for work again.” The possible explanation to the trouble is that John is at his temperature-and-energy peak in the evening. Much family quarrelling ends when husbands and wives realize what these energy cycles mean, and which cycle each member of the family has.
You can’t change your energy cycle, but you can learn to make your life fit it better. Habit can help, Dr. Kleitman believes. Maybe you’re sleepy in the evening but feel you must stay up late anyway. Counteract your cycle to some extent by habitually staying up later than you want to. If your energy is low in the morning, but you have an important job to do early in the day, rise before your usual hour. This won’t change your cycle, but you’ll get up steam and work better at your low point.
Get off to a slow start which saves your energy. Get up with a leisurely yawn and stretch. Sit on the edge of the bed a minute before putting your feet on the floor. Avoid the troublesome search for clean clothes by laying them out the night before. Whenever possible, do routine work in the afternoon and save tasks requiring more energy or concentration for your sharper hours.
52. What’s the relationship between the cycles of your energy and your body temperature?
A. You feel hot when you have a high fever.
B. You feel hot when you are doing physical exercise.
C. The more energetic you are, the higher your temperature is.
D. The less energetic you are, the higher your temperature is.
53. Which of the following statements is true about the energy cycle?
A. Few people have a daily energy cycle.
B. Some people don’t have an energy cycle.
C. Different people have different energy cycles.
D People have never heard of this term.
54. What will happen if family members have no idea of each other’s energy cycle?
A. They may have conflicts. B. They may cooperate well.
C. They may live a harmonious life. D. They may understand each other.
55. According to Dr. Kleitman, how can people work energetically at their low point?
A. Keep to their habitual lifestyle. B. Change their habitual daily routine.
C. Insist on staying up late as usual. D. Organize their activities as regularly as usual.
56. What is the main idea of the last paragraph?
A. How to do routine work. B. How to avoid troublesome problems.

Fake news is everywhere — you see it on your social media, and even on forwarded messages in your phone’s group chats. Being able to spot fake news is an important aspect of life in the digital age. Here’s a simple guide on how to spot fake news.
Check the website and quality of the articles. Look at where the story comes from and read other articles on the site. Are they well written with proper citation (引用), or are they full of grammatical errors? You should also make sure that you are on a legal news website. Some fake sites use addresses similar to those of real news organizations. For example, a website that ends with .com might be real, while the one with .co is not.
Moreover, remember to ask yourself, “Is it the whole truth?” Sometimes a fake news story can have some truth to it, but most of the facts and figures are made up. For example, the event and the people mentioned are real, but the quotes attributed to them and other facts are simply made up. Search for the same story on other credible websites to avoid being misled (误导).
There are other steps you can take to check the information you receive. You can do a reverse image search. Upload a photo to some image search engines to see where else it has been used and for what purpose. That will help you find out if a photograph is being falsely presented. You can also do some independent search. Check the questionable piece of news against other news sources or fact-checking websites, which will help expose fake news and rumors.
52. The first paragraph of the passage is to ________.
A. illustrate the importance of social media
B. explain the bad effects of fake news on social media
C. introduce fake news as the topic of this passage
D. show the author’s attitude towards online fake news
53. Which of the following is probably a reason for the fast spread of fake news?
A. The wide use of social media.
B. The rapid development of education.
C. The increasing number of newspaper readers.
D The great influence of news organizations in the digital age.
54. How can people avoid being cheated by fake news?
A. Browsing websites ending with .co.
B. Believing the forwarded messages without doubt.
C. Taking the received information as definitely true.
D. Checking the received information on credible websites.
55. What is the main purpose of this passage?
A. To exemplify what fake news is. B. To tell people how to identify fake news.
C. To explain why there is so much fake news. D. To call on people to fight against fake news.
56. What does the underlined word “rumors” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Untrue stories. B. Funny stories. C. Private stories. D. Secret stories.
52. C 53. A 54. D 55. B 56. A
根据第一段中的“Being able to spot fake news is an important aspect of life in the digital age. (在数字时代,识别假新闻是生活的一个重要方面。)”和“Here’s a simple guide on how to spot fake news. (这里有一个关于如何识别假新闻的简单指南。)”可知第一段是引出话题并提出辨别虚假信息的方法。故答案选C。
53.考查细节理解。根据第一段中的“you see it on your social media, and even on forwarded messages in your phone’s group chats (你可以在社交媒体上以及在你手机群聊中转发的信息中看到)”可知虚假信息源自社交媒体和群发消息。
根据第三段中的“Search for the same story on other credible websites to avoid being misled.(在其他可信的网站上搜索相同的故事,以避免被误导。)”
根据第一段中的“Being able to spot fake news is an important aspect of life in the digital age. Here’s a simple guide on how to spot fake news.(在数字时代,识别假新闻是生活的一个重要方面。这里有一个关于如何识别假新闻的简单指南)”可知本文的写作目的是指导人们如何辨别消息的真伪。故答案选B。
56.考查词句猜测。根据第四段中的“Check the questionable piece of news against other news sources or fact-checking websites, which will help expose fake news and rumors.(将有问题的新闻与其他新闻来源或事实核查网站进行对比,这将有助于揭露假新闻和谣言)”可知fake news和rumors是并列关系,词义应该相似,和fake news词义相近的应该是不真实的新闻。

As Internet users become more dependent on the Internet to store information, are people remembering less? If you know your computer will save information, why store it in your own personal memory, your brain? Experts are wondering if the Internet is changing what we remember and how.
In a recent study, Professor Betsy Sparrow conducted some experiments. She and her research team wanted to know how the Internet is changing memory. In the first experiment, they gave people 40 unimportant facts to type into a computer. The first group of people understood that the computer would save the information. The second group understood that the computer would not save it. Later, the second group remembered the information better. People in the first group knew they could find the information again, so they did not try to remember it.
In another experiment, the researchers gave people facts to remember, and told them where to find the information on the Internet. The information was in a specific computer folder(文件夹). Surprisingly, people later remembered the folder’s location better than the facts. When people use the Internet, they do not remember the information. Rather, they remember how to find it. This is called “transactive memory”(交互记忆).
According to Sparrow, we are not becoming people with poor memory as a result of the Internet. Instead, computer users are developing stronger transactive memory, that is, people are learning how to organize huge quantities of information so that they are able to access(获得) it at a later date. This does not mean we are becoming either more or less intelligent, but there is no doubt that the way we use memory is changing.
52. The passage begins with two questions to ▲ .
A. introduce the main topic B. show the author’s attitude
C. describe how to use the Internet D. explain how to store information
53. Professor Betsy Sparrow conducted some experiments in order to discover ▲ .
A. if the Internet is changing memory B. how the Internet is changing memory
C. what the Internet is changing D. why the Internet is changing memory
54. What can we learn about the first experiment?
A. Sparrow’s team typed the information into a computer.
B. The two groups remembered the information equally well.
C. The first group did not try to remember the information.
D. The second group did not understand the information.
55. In transactive memory, people ▲ .
A. keep the information in mind B. change the quality of information
C. organize information like a computer D. remember how to find the information
56. What is the effect of the Internet according to Sparrow’s research?
A. We are using memory differently. B. We are becoming more intelligent.
C. We have poorer memories than before. D. We need a better way to access information.
52. A 53. B 54. C 55. D 56. A

C. The first group did not try to remember the information.
这是从第二段中的句子“People in the first group knew they could find the information again,so they did not try to remember it.”
D. remember how to find the information
A. We are using memory differently.
根据最后一段中的句子“This does not mean we are becoming either more or less intelligent, but there is no doubt that the way we use memory is changing.”

In India, one of the most significant festivals is Diwali, which falls between October and November. It's a five-day celebration that includes good food, fireworks, colored sand, special candles and lamps.
In honor of Lakshmi, the Hindu goddess of wealth, people make special prayers on the first day to obtain blessings for welfare, success, and well-being. People welcome the goddess into their homes by decorating entrances with colourful lanterns and traditional designs. In addition, many people treat themselves to fine jewelry, praying for good fortune. Those who cannot afford so much, seek out cheap items such as clothes or household goods.
The second day of the festival is called Kali Chaudas. For some, the day provides an opportunity to get rid of bad luck from homes and businesses. They decorate their homes with clay lamps and create design patterns called Rangoli on the floor using colored powder or sand.
The third day is when the biggest celebrations occur, which begin early in the morning with a visit to a temple to seek the blessing of the goddess. As the sun sets, people light up their homes with small lamps and enjoy delicious traditional foods with their loved ones.
The fourth day of the festival is celebrated in many different ways. Friends and relatives visit with gifts, sweets and best wishes for the season.
And the final day of the festival is called Bhai Dooj. It honors the close bond between brothers and sisters and is observed with traditional ceremonies and more delicious food.
For children in India, Diwali is similar to Christmas. They get an entire week off from school and are treated to gifts, new clothes, amazing food, and, in the past at least, a large number of fireworks. It is no wonder that the festival ranks high among the country's favorite celebrations.

在文章第一段中提到:“It's a five-day celebration that includes good food,fireworks,colored sand,special candles and lamps.”(这是一个为期五天的庆祝活动,包括美食、烟花、彩色沙子、特殊蜡烛和灯笼。)
A. good fortune
在第二段中提到:“In honor of Lakshmi, the Hindu goddess of wealth, people make special prayers on the first day to obtain blessings for welfare, success, and well-being.”(为了向印度教财富女神拉克希米致敬,人们在第一天做特别的祈祷,以获得福利、成功和幸福的祝福。)
B. to help drive away something unpleasant
D. Get together with his brothers and sisters.

C
When I was nine years old, I loved to go fishing with my dad. But the only thing that wasn’t very fun about it was that he could catch many fish while I couldn’t catch anything. I usually got pretty upset and kept asking him why. He always answered, “Son, If you want to catch a fish, you have to think like a fish.” I remember being even more upset then because, “I’m not a fish!”I didn’t know how to think like a fish. Besides, I reasoned, how could what I think influence what a fish does?
As I got a little older I began to understand what my dad really meant. So, I read some books on fish. And I even joined the local club and started attending the monthly meeting. I learned that a fish is a cold-blooded animal and therefore is very sensitive to water temperature. That is why fish prefer shallow water to deep water because the former is warmer. Besides, water is usually warmer in direct sunlight than in the shade. Yet, fish don’t have any eyelids and the sun hurts their eyes... The more I understood fish, the more I became effective at finding and catching them.
When I grew up and entered the business world, I remember hearing my first boss say, “We all need to think like sales people.” But it didn’t completely make sense. My dad had never said, “If you want to catch a fish you need to think like a fisherman.” What he said was, “You need to think like a fish.” Years later, with great efforts to promote long-term services to people much older and richer than me, I gradually learned what we all need is to think more like customers. It is not an easy job. I will show you how in the following chapters.
52. Why was the author upset in fishing trips when he was nine?
A. He could not catch a fish.
B. His father was not patient with him.
C. His father did not teach him fishing.
D. He could not influence his father.

B. his father’s fishing advice inspiring
C. his first boss’sales ideas reasonable
D. it difficult to sell services to poor people

A. a millionaire’s story B. a popular sales book
C. a novel on childhood D. a book on fishing guide
A 53. C 54. D 55. B 56. B
A. He could not catch a fish.
C. To understand what he thinks.
D. in shallow water under waterside trees
B. his father’s fishing advice inspiring
B. a popular sales book

When you open your e-mail, you may find information about how to buy medicine, cheap airline tickets, books, computer products, and so on. There may also be offers for investment deals, bank loans and special holidays. However, to many computer users, this use of spam to sell products has become a major problem as it makes computer communication more difficult.
Many companies that want to send a great deal of advertising at the same time might use the services of a“ spammer”. A spammer is a person or company that uses computers to send out millions of copies of the same sales information. Spammers get people’s e-mail addresses from websites, news groups and“chat rooms”where people send messages to each other.
Most spam is sent by companies that are trying to get you to buy their products. Some of these are honest companies that may offer good products or services for fair prices. These companies can offer their products for a cheaper price than you may find in a store. However,
much of the spam on the Internet is sent by criminal(s 罪犯)who are trying to sell products that do

Nowadays, the food that you buy comes from many countries. Have a look in your fridge, cupboard, and fruit bowl and check the origins (来源 ) of the food. Perhaps there are apples from California, lamb from New Zealand, or potatoes from Egypt. You will probably be surprised how far food travels to get to your plate. This journey, from “field to plate”,is called “food miles”. A food mile is the distance that food travels from the farmer 5s field to the person who buys the food. Nowadays, food often travels thousands of miles to get to the consumer(消费者). Why is this, and what are the effects of these long distances?
Traditionally, farmers sold their food in the local market, so the food didn^ have to travel very far. The consumers also did not travel very far because they went to their local market to buy the food. This was a good system for farmers and consumers. However, there were some disadvantages. For example, consumers could only buy food that fanners produced locally. In addition, they could only get food that was in season. Now because of modem technology, food comes from all over the world. We do not have to wait for spring or summer to buy strawberries or tomatoes. They are available in winter if we want.
Some countries have to import (进口) most of their food. This is because they have difficult climates. The United Arab Emirates(UAE), for example, gets 85% of its food from other countries. Even food made in the UAE often uses imported materials.
What’s wrong with “food miles”? Is this not a good way of increasing international trade? I believe these miles are worrying for a number of reasons. First of all, because food travels such long distances, we need more planes, lorries, and ships to move the food. This means we use more oil or petrol, so there is more pollution and more global warming. In addition, food that travels a long way is not fresh and usually not very tasty. Tomatoes, for example, are picked early and stored for their long journeys. For this reason, they are usually tasteless when they get to the consumer. Local food has a better taste, and it also reduces the amount of global pollution. We need to buy more local food.
52.What is called “food miles” according to the passage?
A. The origin of the food.
B. The effect of long distances.
C. The journey from field to plate.
D. The disadvantages of imported food.
53.The word “available” in Paragraph 2 most probably means “ ▲ ”
A. easy to get
B. not busy
C. willing to talk
D. impossible to get
54.Some countries, like the United Arab Emirates, have to import most of their food because of
A. long distances B. difficult climates
C. fresh and tasty food D. modem technology

How long you live has a lot to do with your environment and lifestyle, but exceptional long life may have even more to do with your genes. For the first time, researchers have discovered a genetic recipe(墓因谱) that can tell who may live to 100 and beyond.
Detailed examination shows that 90% of the people who lived to 100 had at least one of the signature genetic clusters(标志基因组). Dr. Thomas Perls at the School of Medicine of Boston University said, "We realize that this is a complex genetic puzzle. There is a long way for us to go to understand how the combination of these genes with lifestyle factors is playing a role in this long life puzzle."
Perls has studied many factors that help people to live long, and he is the first to recognize that living longer isn't likely to be simply a matter of genes. His previous work has shown, for example, that among mostly elderly people who live into their 70s and 80s, about 70% can owe their long life to lifestyle factors such as not smoking; eating a healthy, low-fat, low-calorie diet; and remaining socially engaged and mentally active (恩维活跃) throughout life.
It seems clear that those who live extremely long are benefiting from a special DNA. In fact, Perls believes that the older a person gets, the more likely it is that his or her genes are contributing to those extended years.
52. Perls may most likely agree that ▲
A. living longer just depends on certain genetic recipes
B. the combination of certain genes with lifestyle factors plays an important role in long-living
C. most people living extremely long benefit from not smoking
D. being mentally active has nothing to do with living an old age
53. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?
A. Remaining socially engaged helps a person to live long.
B. If you want to live to 100, you must have the right genes.
C. A genetic recipe can predict who may live to 100 and beyond.
D. Perls is the first to think living longer is just a matter of genes.
54. Which of the following would be the best title of the passage?
A. The Secret of Long life B. Diet and Smoking
C. Genes Decide Your Lifestyle D. Environment and Resources
55. Perls believes that ▲ .
A. they have understood how certain genes with lifestyle factors are playing a role in a long life
B. there is a long way for them to get to understand what leads to a long life
C. they are close to the factors why people can live a long life
D. they fail to understand what makes a long life possible
56. In which part of a newspaper can you most probably find this passage?
A. Sports and Games B.Entertainment and Economics
C. Medicine and Science D. Culture and Custom

B. the combination of certain genes with lifestyle factors plays an important role in long-living
D. Perls is the first to think living longer is just a matter of genes.
A. The Secret of Long life

Just a couple of hours ago, I was on the plane, ready to fly home from London. The flight had been put off by a few hours so it felt good to be so close to take-off. I had my iPad in place and a new book to read. Then, over the loudspeaker came the pilot’s voice;“We are sorry to tell you we must cancel this flight because there’s still something wrong with the plane.”
The passengers’ reactions that announcement led to were interesting. One man close to me began to argue with an air hostess. A couple in another row complained loudly. More Chinese universities are opening their libraries to the public, allowing people to enjoy reading during normal time and the vacations.
But for some students, including Wang Ling, 21, in Sun Yet-sen University, this practice has caused headaches. "Members of the public come to our library more for sightseeing than reading."
said Wang.
"They sometimes even bring their kids along, and take photos as if it were a place of interest."
Wang has found it hard to get a seat during busy times, Being short of space is a common problem for university libraries in China.
However, this is not the only reason why students dislike their libraries being open to members of the public. They fear that the quietness of the libraries will be influenced because of visitors' rude behavior.
Chen Jie, 18, a student in Tongji University, is one who would be against opening to the public. "I have been to a public library before. People were chatting loudly or speaking on cellphone so you can hardly read," Chen said. She notices teachers doing serious reading and feels their concentration has influenced her. "If too many strangers stay here, the whole library will be a noisy place and it's difficult for us to study quietly," she said.
Will there be alternative(可替代的) ways to share those libraries? Some experts consider that university libraries can prevent the public from entering certain areas. "We might keep magazines for academic research only for teachers and students," said Zhu Lina, the library director in Jinan University.
Working together with the community library is another solution. "It's possible that a member of the public can order a book in our library over the Internet," Ge Jianxiong, the library director in Fudan University said. "We'll send it to a public library close to their home."
