(2023·江苏南京金陵中学校考)The Palace Museum's clock collection,more than 1.500 in
number, is arguably one of the most breathtaking clock preservations worldwide. 1 (make)
between the 18th century and the 2oth century, some were crafted in Britain, France and
Switzerland, some were from the Clock Workshop of the Qing Palace, and the others were 2
mixture of both the East and the West.
The 3 (major) of British clocks feature bronze cases inlaid with splendidly colourful jewels.
They are diverse 4 form, recreating all kinds of architecture and natural sights, and often
include automatic 5 (decorate), such as fountains, moving figures, boats and birds. These
clocks represent the highest level of craftsmanship in Britain.
Most of the French clocks here are the products of the early 2oth century. Whether in terms of
theme 6 decorative style, the French clocks in the collection have a style of 7 (they) own,
and deserve their place in history.
The Swiss timepieces 8 (most) comprise small, unconventionally shaped desk clocks and
delicate pocket watches. They were specially made 9 (suit) the tastes of Chinese customers.
Clocks may turn back in time, but humans may never dream of doing so. Today, the Palace
Museum 1o (aim) to carry on this touching tale of "time" as an guardian of this traditional
craftsmanship.

(2024·重庆统考期末)Some ants have figured out how to avoid getting lost: build taller
anthills, according to a recent study.
Desert ants living in the hot, flat salt pans of Tunisia spend their days looking for food and
reach as far as 1.1 kilometres from their nests. To find their way home, desert ants use a navigation
system, relying on the sun's position and counting their steps to track their location relative to thei
nest.
054·学霸组合训练·英语 高二上
But this system becomes increasingly unreliable as the distance from the nest increases. "We
realised that, whenever the ants in salt pans came closer to their nest, they suddenly pinpointed the
nest hill from several metres distance," says Markus Knaden, a researcher at Max Planck Institute
for Chemical Ecology. "This made us think that the hill serves as a nest-defining landmark."
So Knaden and colleagues captured ants from nests in the middle of salt pans and from along
their shorelines(海岸线). Only salt-pan nests had distinct hills, up to 4o centimetres tall, whereas
the hills on shoreline nests were lower or barely noticeable. Next, the team removed any hills and
placed the captured insects some distance away from their nests. Salt-pan ants struggled more than
shore ants to find homes. Shore ants relied on the shoreline for guidance and weren't affected by the
hill removal, the researchers concluded
The team further conducted another study to see if desert ants were deliberately building a
taller hill when their surroundings lacked any visible landmarks. So, the researchers removed the
hills of 16 salt-pan nests and installed(安装) two 50-centimetre-tall blocks near eight of them. The
other eight nests were left without any artificial visual aid. After three days, the researchers found
that seven ants from the unaided nests had rebuilt their hills. But only two ants from the nests with
man-made blocks nearby had bothered to rebuild.
“It implies that ants regularly assess the complexity of their environment and change their
decisions based on their conclusion," says ecologist Judith Bronstein of the University of Arizona.

(2023·湖北荆州联考)WHY ADOSEOF FEAR ISGOOD FOR YOU
Eleanor Roosevelt once said: "Do one thing every day that scares you."She was onto
第一部分 基础过关。055
something. Science has shown that feeling fear-in the right doses-has several benefits.
· Feeling fear is fun and exciting. Many people scare themselves on purpose. 1
When you step outside your comfort zone, it is fear that makes you feel alive, which is fun and
exciting. The excitement generated can also help reduce depression by increasing adrenaline(贤 上腹
素), which in turn increases excitement and glucose (changed into energy). 2 A dose of fear is
an"eraser" for the mind.
· 3 Being afraid of something can remind you of an area of your life that is limiting you.
For instance, if you're afraid of flying but face the fear and gather up the courage to step on an
airplane, you can travel the world. Adding to your experiences means that you'll create a varied life.
You'll also have fewer regrets.
· Fear makes you aware of what's really important in life. How often have you said to yourself:
“When I have more time, I'll spend it with my family, pursue my passion, eat healthier or exercise
more."? Fear makes you realise that "now" is the only time you have to achieve and follow through
what is most important. 4
Some say where fear meets courage is the sweet spot in which mountains get scaled and rivers
run. 5 We should all embrace our fear. Not the big fears that are life-threatening but the
helpful fears that come in small doses.
A. Fear helps you succeed.
B. “Later" is never ensured.
C. Fear allows you to live life to the fullest.
D. They watch scary films, ride roller coasters or go skydiving.
E. And every time you come through a challenge, you feel empowered.
F. Most of all, fear can be the birthplace of change, creativity and innovation
G. Actually, it's nearly impossible to be thinking of your worries when you are experiencing fear.
