The idiom "Broken Mirror Reunion" originates from a touching tale involving Yang Su, Duke of Yue of the Sui Dynasty, who facilitated a fulfilling marriage for others.
During the late Northern and Southern Dynasties, Emperor Yang Jian of the Sui Dynasty dispatched troops southwards to eliminate the Southern Chen Dynasty in his quest to unify China.
The last emperor of Chen, Emperor Chen Shubao, indulged in drinking, poetry, and pleasure-seeking, neglecting state affairs and causing turmoil within the court.
In Chen, there was a man named Xu Deyan, husband of Princess Lechang, sister of Chen's final emperor.
Sensing the impending downfall of Chen, Xu tearfully said to Princess Lechang, "With our country soon to fall, we will no longer be able to stay together.
With your beauty and talent, you will surely be taken into the palace or a wealthy household after our country's demise. If we survive, I hope we can reunite in the future."
With these words, he took out a round bronze mirror, broke it in half, gave one half to Princess Lechang, and kept the other half for himself, agreeing that if they were separated, they would seek each other out on the fifth Lantern Festival, amidst the bustling streets of Chang'an.
Soon after, Chen Dynasty was conquered by Sui Dynasty, and indeed, Princess Lechang was captured and sent to Chang'an, becoming the concubine of Yang Su, Duke of Yue.
Xu Deyan, deeply missing his wife, embarked on a long journey to Chang'an to find her.
On the Lantern Festival as agreed, he took to the streets selling his half of the bronze mirror, and after a long walk, he suddenly encountered an old servant also selling a half of a bronze mirror.
Taking it and finding it fitting perfectly with his own half, Xu Deyan was overcome with tears upon realizing Princess Lechang was in Yang's residence, feeling hopeless at the thought of seeing her again.
He wrote a poem titled "Broken Mirror" on the half mirror, which the old servant took back to Princess Lechang.
The poem read, "The mirror and I are separated, but the mirror has not returned to you. Without Chang'e's reflection, only the brilliance of the moon remains."
Upon reading Xu Deyan's poem, Princess Lechang refrained from eating or sleeping for several days, tears washing her face.
Yang Su, upon learning the truth, deeply sympathized with the couple's hardships. He summoned Xu Deyan and returned Princess Lechang to him, hosting a banquet to celebrate their "Broken Mirror Reunion."
This poignant story has been widely circulated, giving rise to the idiom "Broken Mirror Reunion," which continues to be celebrated and passed down to this day.
In ancient China, many love stories were far from perfect, but "Broken Mirror Reunion" stands out as a rare and noble tale.
When lovers or spouses parted ways in ancient times, they often exchanged special tokens to express their emotions. In the legend of "Broken Mirror Reunion," this token was a round mirror, symbolizing deep affection and hope between the two.
The separation of Xu Deyan and his wife was due to external factors—war and turmoil—a formal rupture, whereas their reunion was based on their mutual subjective efforts and determination.
Three Men Make a Tiger
During the Warring States period, countries frequently attacked and fought each other.
To ensure the credibility of alliances, it was common for two nations to exchange hostages, typically the crown prince, when they ceased hostilities and signed a treaty.
Before accompanying the crown prince to Zhao as a hostage, Wei state minister Pang Cong said to King Wei, "If someone now says there is a tiger in the marketplace, would Your Majesty believe it?"
King Wei replied, "I wouldn't believe it."
Pang Cong continued, "If two people say there is a tiger in the marketplace, would Your Majesty believe it?"
King Wei replied, "I would start to doubt."
Pang Cong then asked, "If three people say there is a tiger in the marketplace, would Your Majesty believe it?"
King Wei answered, "If so many people say they have seen the tiger, there must be some truth to it, I would believe it."
Pang Cong explained, "Everyone knows that it is impossible for a tiger to appear in the marketplace, but if three people claim there is, it would seem true.
Now, the capital of Zhao, Handan, is much farther from our capital, Daliang, than the marketplace is from here. There will be more than three people talking about me. I hope Your Majesty can see through their words clearly."
King Wei agreed, "I understand."
However, as soon as Pang Cong left with the crown prince, people began to slander him in front of the king.
Initially, King Wei defended Pang Cong, but as the number of slanderers increased, the king eventually believed the accusations.
When the crown prince returned from Zhao, King Wei never summoned Pang Cong again.
This story vividly illustrates the power of rumors and how repeated misinformation, even about something impossible, can be perceived as true.
This anecdote is known in Chinese history and culture as "Three Men Make a Tiger," signifying the influence of repeated lies and how easily people can be swayed by others.
Quenching thirst by thinking of yumberry
During the late Eastern Han Dynasty, Cao Cao led his troops to attack Zhang Xiu.
It was midsummer at the time, with scorching hot weather, and Cao Cao's army had been marching for several days, their carried water already consumed.
The terrain was barren, with only desolate hills and no signs of human habitation or water sources.
The soldiers, burdened with heavy weapons, were drenched in sweat, suffering from both heat and thirst, making the march exceedingly difficult.
Seeing his soldiers licking their dry lips and barely able to continue marching, Cao Cao became very anxious.
He ordered the troops to rest in place and sent men in all directions to search for water.
After a long while, the searchers returned empty-handed, carrying only empty buckets.
Cao Cao then commanded the soldiers to dig a well on the spot. The troops, sweating profusely, dug for a long time but couldn't find a single drop of water.
Cao Cao realized the situation was dire and that if they stayed there any longer, more soldiers would be unable to endure.
He thought for a moment, then pointed to the hillside ahead and said loudly to the soldiers, "I am very familiar with this area. Just over the next hill, there is a vast forest of lush yumberries."
When we get there, each of you will be able to enjoy the yangmei to your heart's content."
When the soldiers heard about the yangmei and its sour juice, they immediately thought of the sour taste, began to salivate, and felt less thirsty.
Cao Cao promptly ordered the troops to continue marching. After some time, they finally found a water source. Everyone drank heartily, felt revitalized, and continued their march with renewed vigor.
Cao Cao used the conditioned reflex people had towards sour plums to instill hope and boost morale among his soldiers.
This not only addressed their thirst but also accelerated the pace of their march.
The fable teaches us that in the face of difficulties, we should not shrink back but instead motivate ourselves with a thirst for success. This courage enables us to overcome challenges, as success often lies just beyond persistent efforts.
The snipe and the clam struggle 鹬(yù )蚌(bàng)相争
A clam had not been on shore for a long time.
One day, the sun came out, and the riverbank was warm. The clam crawled onto the shore, opened its shell, and basked in the sun.
Feeling very comfortable, the clam lazily dozed off.
At this moment, a snipe flew over and quietly landed beside the clam.
The snipe quickly used its long, sharp beak to peck at the clam’s flesh.
The clam was startled awake and quickly closed its shell, tightly trapping the snipe's beak.
The snipe said to the clam, "Let's see how long you can stay on the shore! If it doesn't rain today or tomorrow, you'll dry out and die. By then, there will be a dead clam here."
The clam firmly responded, "Let's see how long you can go without food! If I don't release your beak today or tomorrow, you'll starve to death. By then, there will be a dead snipe here."
The two little creatures confronted each other like this, neither willing to give in, seemingly ready to fight to the death.
At this moment, a fisherman walked by. Seeing this situation, he easily took advantage of it and caught both the clam and the snipe, happily taking them home.
"The struggle between the snipe and the clam" is often used together with "the fisherman benefits," and it is commonly used to describe a situation where two parties are in conflict, leading to mutual destruction, allowing a third party to benefit from the situation.
