Because of a lack of trained lifeguards to watch over swimming pools, a team of scientists from Germany has developed an underwater robot to help lifeguards in rescuing (救援) swimmers in emergencies.
According to scientists, there are some typical postures that you can use to recognize when someone is in danger. The robot has been tested in a variety of settings including indoor pools and open water. If swimmers’ movements are consistent with drowning (溺亡), the information of the drowning person will be sent out, which is stored in a docking station on the pool floor, and it will be released by a signal from the monitoring cameras. Once the robot receives the signal and reaches its destination, it will carry the endangered person to the surface. What’s more, the robot is designed with a set of moving parts to keep the lifeless person from sliding down as the robot surfaces.
When the robot is tested at lakes and other outdoor settings, drones (无人机) took on the task of the monitoring cameras. For rescues in swimming lakes where the visibility is limited, the underwater vehicle must be equipped with acoustic sensors (声音传感器). Sound wave echoes can be used to determine people’s positions so precisely that the robot can autonomously head for the target person and pick them up. When the robot is informed of an emergency (紧急情况), a signal will warn the team immediately.
“The current system is 90 centimeters long, 50 centimeters high, and 50 centimeters wide and looks like an underwater submersible that might be used for exploring ship wrecks. The central innovation (创新)of the system is the side folding wings that fix lifeless people on a stretcher without injuring them. To bring them to the surface of the water, balloons are filled with a total of 15 to 20 kilos of buoyancy (浮力).
The research team are still doing research on the robot, aiming to make future versions smaller, lighter and less expensive. At present, a patent has already been filed for the aquatic robot. In modified versions, it can take on further tasks—such as offshore and dam wall (坝墙)inspections or being used to monitor the health of fish in fish farms.
24.Why did German scientists invent an underwater robot?
A.To help lifeguards to rescue.
B.To prevent swimmers practicing.
C.To check if there are emergencies.
D.To watch over the swimming pools.
25.The expression “be released” in Paragraph 2 probably means “______”.
A.be sent out B.be controlled
C.be taken up D.be delivered
26.Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A.A Robot to Build Dam Walls B.A Robot to Prevent Drowning
C.A Robot to Protect Lifeguards D.A Robot to Improve Swimmers’ Skills

As Internet users become more dependent on the Internet to store information, do people remember less? If you know your computer will save information, why store it in your own personal memory, your brain? Experts are wondering if the Internet is changing what we remember and how.
In a recent study, Professor Betsy Sparrow conducted some experiments. She and her research team wanted to know the Internet is changing memory. In the first experiment, they gave people 40 unimportant facts to type into a computer. The first group of people understood that the computer would save the information. The second group understood that the computer would not save it. Later, the second group remembered the information better. People in the first group knew they could find the information again, so they did not try to remember it.
In another experiment, the researchers gave people facts to remember, and told them where to find the information on the Internet. The information was in a specific computer folder(文件夹). Surprisingly, people later remember the folder location(位置)better than the facts. When people use the Internet, they do not remember the information. Rather, they remember how to find it. This is called “transactive memory(交互记忆)”.
According to Sparrow, we are not becoming people with poor memories as a result of the Internet. Instead, computer users are developing stronger transactive memories; that is, people are learning how to organize huge quantities of information so that they are able to access it at a later date. This doesn’t mean we are becoming either more or less intelligent, but there is no doubt that the way we use memory is changing.
27.What can we learn about the first experiment?
A.Sparrow’s team typed the information into a computer.
B.The two groups remembered the information equally well.
C.The first group did not try to remember the information.
D.The second group did not understand the information.
28.In transactive memory, people ________.
A.keep the information in mind
B.change the quantity of information
C.organize information like a computer
D.remember how to find the information
29.What is the effect of the Internet according to Sparrow’s research?
A.We are using memory differently.
B.We are becoming more intelligent.
C.We have poorer memories than before.
D.We need a better way to access information.
D
In 1883, an imaginative engineer named John Roebling decided to build a spectacular(壮观的)bridge connecting New York with Long Island. However, bridge building experts throughout the world thought that this was a pipe dream. It was not practical. It had never been done before.
But Roebling refused to listen to them. He thought about the bridge day and night and he knew deep in his heart that it could be done. After much discussion and persuasion he convinced (说服) his son Washington, who was a promising engineer himself, that the bridge in fact could be built.
Working together for the first time, the father and son developed concepts of how it could be done. With great excitement, they hired their crew and began to build their dream bridge.
The project started well, but several months after it began, a tragic accident on the site took the life of John Roebling. Washington was so seriously injured that he was never able to walk, talk or even move again.
"We told them so", "Crazy men and their crazy dreams", "It's foolish to chase (追求) wild visions", the critics said and most thought the project should be ended since the Roeblings were the only ones who knew how the bridge can be built. In spite of his handicap Washington still had a burning desire to complete the bridge and his mind was still as sharp as ever.
Washington's wife tried to inspire and pass on her husband's enthusiasm to some of his friends, but they were too daunted by the task. As he lay in his hospital room, an idea suddenly hit him. All he could do was to move one finger and he decided to make the best use of it. By moving this finger and tapping (轻叩) it on his wife's arm, he slowly developed a code (代码) to communicate with her. Then he used this way to tell his wife what the engineers should do. It seemed crazy but the project was under way again. For 13 years Washington tapped out his instructions with his finger on his wife's arm, until the bridge was finally completed.
Today the spectacular Brooklyn Bridge stands in all its glory as a tribute (致敬) to the great success of one man's spirit and his determination not to be defeated by circumstances (境遇).

The Future Is Far Away!
Alyssa Carson is a teenager and she already has a big dream for her future. If her dream comes true, she’ll fly into space. But she doesn’t want to orbit(环绕……运行)the earth on the space station or go to the moon. Alyssa wants to travel to Mars, the red planet.
So, is this just a dream? No. Alyssa made the decision when she was three years old because the idea was exciting and “no one’s been there!” After that she read lots of books on Mars and attended her first space camp when she was seven. Since then, she’s learned a lot about travelling to other planets. It’s an expensive trip which requires many years of training. This is a problem for Alyssa’s family, but her parents try to support her because she has been trying her best to make her dream come true. Alyssa believes we are the Mars generation and that the mission(飞行任务) to Mars will help us get to know the planet better.
More than 100, 000 people have already applied(申请)for a journey to Mars. If they pass the tests, like Alyssa, they will start a training program. She has a certificate(证书)in scuba diving and is already working on her pilot’s license. Both these things, as well as a certificate in skydiving are important for an astronaut’s training. And it’s necessary to speak several languages if you want to be an astronaut. Alyssa speaks Spanish, French, Chinese and some Turkish, so this should be enough!
Only a few people can go on the first Mars mission. The flight to Mars won’t be easy. They will spend hundreds of days together in a very tight space! So, if you were an astronaut on Mars, what would life be like? You would live in an extremely small space called a “pod” and you would wear a space suit all the time. If you made a phone call home, it would take half an hour for the sound to reach the earth! Also, if you got ill, there wouldn’t be any hospitals. Life wouldn’t be as easy, that’s for sure! But it would be really exciting.
34.Where does Alyssa want to travel?
35.Why do Alyssa’s parents support her?
36.What are the important things for an astronaut’s training?
37.What do you think of Alyssa? Why do you think so? (List two reasons)

2.Julius Caesar ________ that someone wanted to kill him and he should not speak in public.
A.was warned B.warned C.was asked D.told
【答案】A
【详解】句意:尤利乌斯·凯撒被警告有人想要杀他,他不应该在公开场合讲话。
考查被动语态。warned警告;asked要求;told告诉。分析句子结构可知,凯撒是被动地接收到这个警告,因此需要用被动语态,根据“someone wanted to kill him and he should not speak in public.”可知,此处指的是“被警告”,故选A。
3.Diogenes only owned three things including a bowl ________.
A.eat at B.eat with C.to eat with D.to eat at
【答案】C
【详解】句意:Diogenes只拥有三样东西,包括一个用来吃饭的碗。

【答案】24.A 25.A 26.B
【导语】本文介绍的是防溺水机器人。
24.细节理解题。根据“a team of scientists from Germany has developed an underwater robot to help lifeguards in rescuing (救援) swimmers in emergencies.”可知,为了帮助救生员营救。故选A。
25.词义猜测题。根据“If swimmers’ movements are consistent with drowning (溺亡), the information of the drowning person will be sent out, which is stored in a docking station on the pool floor, and it will be released by a signal from the monitoring cameras.”可知,如果游泳者的动作与溺水一致,溺水者的信息将被发送出去,这些信息存储在游泳池地板上的一个坞站中,并通过监控摄像头的信号发布。因此划线单词的意思是“发出”,与send out一致。故选A。
26.最佳标题题。根据“Because of a lack of trained lifeguards to watch over swimming pools, a team of scientists from Germany has developed an underwater robot to help lifeguards in rescuing (救援) swimmers in emergencies.”以及通读全文可知,本文讲述的是一款防溺水机器人。故选B。

【答案】27.C 28.D 29.A
【解析】本文是议论文。文章主要讲的是互联网给人类的记忆带来的影响。
27.细节理解题。根据第二段“People in the first group knew they could find the information again, so they did not try to remember it.”可知,第一组没有尝试记住信息。故选C。
28. 细节理解题。根据倒数第二段“Rather, they remember how to find it. This is called 'transactive memory'”可知,在交互记忆里,人们记得怎样找到信息。故选D。
29.推理判断题。根据最后一段“but there is no doubt that the way we use memory is changing”可知,互联网对人们的记忆产生的影响是它改变了我们使用记忆力的方式。故选A。
30.The underlined word "daunted" (para.6) is closest in meaning to "__________".
A.unpleasant B.amazed C.scared D.determined
31.Which of the following shows the correct order of the events that happened in the story?
a. Roebling convinced his son.
b. Washington found a new way to communicate.
c. They hired the crew.
d. The bridge was completed.
e. Roebling wanted to build a bridge.
f. There was a tragic accident.
A.e, a, c, f, d, b B.e, a, c, f, b, d C.e, f, a, b, c, d D.e, a, f, b, c, d
32.What can we learn about Washington's wife?
A.She was devoted to her husband. B.She knew sign language very well.
C.She developed a code to communicate with her husband. D.She helped her husband design the plan.
33.What does the story tell us?
A.Success will come with the passing of time.
B.Struggles are exactly what we need in our lives.
C.The people who make a difference in our life should be remembered forever.
D.Even the most distant dream can be realized with a never-say-die attitude.
【答案】30.C 31.B 32.A 33.D
It's foolish to chase (追求) wild visions", the critics said and most thought the project should be ended since the Roeblings were the only ones who knew how the bridge can be built“评论家们说:追求不切实际的幻想是愚蠢的。大多数人认为这个项目应该结束,因为只有罗布林知道如何建造这座桥”以及Washington's wife tried to inspire and pass on her husband's enthusiasm to some of his friends“华盛顿的妻子试图激发他并且向他的一些朋友传递他的热忱”可知,专家都认为这是不可能的事情,所以他的朋友听说后都会感到恐惧,故选C。
31.细节理解题。根据In 1883, an imaginative engineer named John Roebling decided to build a spectacular(壮观的)bridge connecting New York with Long Island“在1883年,一个叫做约翰罗布林的有想象力的工程师决定建立一个连接纽约和长岛的大桥”;After much discussion and persuasion he convinced (说服) his son Washington, who was a promising engineer himself, that the bridge in fact could be built“在许多次讨论和劝说后,他成功说服他的儿子华盛顿,他的儿子是一个有前途的工程师,这个大桥事实上可以被建造”;With great excitement, they hired their crew and began to build their dream bridge“带着兴奋的心情,他们雇佣了他们的员工并且开始建造他们梦想的大桥”;The project started well, but several months after it began, a tragic accident on the site took the life of John Roebling“这个工程开始很好,但是开始后几个月,一个悲剧性的事故夺去了约翰罗布林的生命”;As he lay in his hospital room, an idea suddenly hit him. All he could do was to move one finger and he decided to make the best use of it“当他躺在医院的房间里,他突然想起一个主意,他所能做的就是移动一根手指,并且决定充分利用它”;For 13 years Washington tapped out his instructions with his finger on his wife's arm, until the bridge was finally completed“在十三年的时间里,华盛顿在他的妻子的胳膊上敲打他的指令,直到这个大桥最终建成”可知,顺序为e,a,c,f,b,d,故选B。
32.推理判断题。根据Washington's wife tried to inspire and pass on her husband's enthusiasm to some of his friends“华盛顿的妻子试图激发他并且向他的一些朋友传递他的热忱”以及For 13 years Washington tapped out his instructions with his finger on his wife's arm, until the bridge was finally completed“在十三年的时间里,华盛顿在他的妻子的胳膊上敲打他的指令,直到这个大桥最终建成”可知,虽然华盛顿不能动弹,但是他的妻子不离不弃,帮助他完成这个项目,所以他的妻子坚贞不渝,将她自己投入到他的丈夫的事业中,故选A。

When someone 16 the gun, I was off, swimming towards the distant buoy (浮标) that marked my turn. I finished the half-mile swim and ran towards my bike. I was dripping 17 , trying to get on it. Once on my bike, I experienced a particular excitement of 18 . I went through the transition zone (转换区) again and switched to my running shoes. At the start of the run part of the triathlon, my legs already felt like they were made of cement (水泥) .
For me, the real competition began during the run, because now I could see each 19 as a goal. No matter my position in the field, each racer was either following me or being followed. The run part of the race boiled down to pain tolerance. “Shut up, legs”, one of my favorite sayings, kept me from thinking about the 20 feeling. Then I crossed the finish line. I took a breath and then began a celebration with the other finishers. The sense of achievement was there for all of us.
Looking back, I remember the small boy on that day in Montauk who thought he couldn’t do it. Now, that same boy is not only a huge fan, but also a training partner.
