Many kids do the housework such as washing the dishes, making the bed and folding the clothes. In exchange, they get some money or extra computer time.
Paying kids for the housework is one of the most popular topics, especially at a time when everyone is more careful about money. Some parents think since adults are paid to do their jobs, we should pay kids for everyday housework.
But some people think kids shouldn't get rewards(报酬) for doing the housework. Susie Walton, an expert , believes that by rewarding kids, parents are sending a message that work isn't worth doing unless you get something in return. “Running any kind of housework is a team effort,”Walton said.“A home is a living space for everyone in the family. It's important for kids to see that we all have responsibilities in the house. Family members decide how they want their home to look, and how they are going to keep it looking like what they want.”
Other people believe that getting a reward encourages kids to do the housework. It also teaches them real-world lessons about how we need to work to get money. There are also apps that give kids point s and digital gifts that can be redeemed(兑现) either online or in the real world.“Our goal is to give kids lawful power so they can get rewards,”says Chris Bergman.“And kids need rewards to encourage themselves.”

Rob had problems with bullies(欺辱) at school for eleven years. He was often lonely and scared. When he was fifteen, however, he decided to do something about his problems. He walked into a newspaper office and told them about the bullying. His story went into the newspaper and soon all the TV stations in Canada wanted to talk to him about his experiences. They also wanted to hear his ideas to stop bullying.
After that, Rob continued his studies at school, but in his free time he helped other people with bullying problems. With a friend Katie Neu, he made a website called www. bullyingcanada. ca. Visitors to the website can find advice, stories and poems about bullying, in both English and French. When people are upset, they can talk on the phone or online to Rob and his team. Every weekend Rob has to answer e-mails to the website. He also speaks to children, teachers and members of government around the country about bullying.
Rob’s most important message is: “When bullies are unkind to you, it isn’t your fault. There’s nothing wrong with you, so you should try to keep trusting yourself. And remember that people care about your problems. You just have to find those people.”
One of Rob’s ideas is “Blue Day”, a special day for stopping bullying in schools. Students have to wear blue clothes and in class they learn how to stop bullying. More than 150 Canadian schools now celebrate Blue Day, but Rob won’t stop until there’s a Blue Day in every school in Canada.

My father is a truck driver, and he has been for over 30 years. He works more than 12 hours every day, and weekends.
One evening my father brought my brother and me to pick up our mother. We arrived at the Eagles Hall and were waiting in the truck when my father smelled something. He looked behind our truck and could see smoke coming from a house, a block behind us. He drove quickly to the house. The smoke was thick, and we saw fire when he opened the door and went inside. He came out with a woman and rushed back in for her children. He didn't stop until all the children were out. When the firemen arrived we went back to get my mother.
My father didn't even mention it to Mom. We had to tell her what we had seen. My father said that nothing much happened and not to worry. The next day, it was reported in the newspaper that the people in the house were trying to find my father to thank him. My father just said they had more important things to care about.
My father has a metal detector. He used it all over the town, in fields, bus stations, parks—almost everywhere. He found countless amounts of change, jewelry, and junk. The most valuable thing he found was a pure gold nursing pin, a badge(徽章) given to nurses when they graduated. There was a name on it, and a date in the early 1920s. Dad did some research and learned that the owner was now in a nursing home several hundred miles away.
The next Sunday he drove to see her. She was overjoyed. The pin had been lost for over 50 years. The woman asked my father how much he wanted for the pin and he refused any reward. But the woman became upset that he would accept nothing, so he compromised by accepting gas money for the trip—though I am sure that he didn't tell her how much the drive really cost.
Any one of these events makes my dad a hero, but he never stops. I've learned from him that being a hero means doing whatever you can whenever you can.
