(2024·武汉调研)No high school exchange student chooses the small town in the Midwest over California or New York City, but Ole has enjoyed and learned to the point that I don't think he regrets it anyway. It has been a good adventure for us and I think for him too.
Ole's stay was inspiring, entertaining, and fun.We enjoyed his time here and have learned almost as much as he has, I'm sure.He is a very wellrounded kid with many experiences, has a very good understanding of America, and speaks English very well.He and we,now take many of the things he initially was amazed by for granted. It has been fun watching him experience a lot of these.
He got to experience playing soccer for his school. We went to many games and he was fortunate enough to have a coach and a team that were kind enough to a new kid and gave him much playing time.Since he has had no school sports before, the whole concept of having your classmates cheer you on at regional competitions and having fans watch the games, let alone having the competition on TV, was a huge thing for him.The team also gave him a bunch of immediate friends and acquaintances. He liked being able to go to the high school basketball and football games too.He also got to go several of the school dances, a thing he doesn't do in his hometown.
We do feel fortunate to have had a kid who made an effort to get out and meet people, ask for rides, but was careful about who he hung out with. Our three kids did not meet any high school exchange students that were as well known in the school or as well liked and accepted as Ole had been.
We do expect that this hosting experience is the start of a lifelong relationship.

Meeting people from another culture can be difficult. From the beginning, people may send the wrong signal.Or they may pay no attention to signals from another person who is trying to develop a relationship.
Different cultures emphasise the importance of relationship building to a greater or lesser degree. For example, business in some countries is not possible until there is a relationship of trust.Even with people at work, it is necessary to spend a lot of time on “small talks”, usually over a glass of tea, before they do any job. In many European countries — like the UK or France — people find it easier to build up a lasting working relationship at restaurants or cafes rather than at the office.
Talk and silence may also be different in some cultures.I once made a speech in Thailand.I had expected my speech to be a success and started a lively discussion; instead there was an uncomfortable silence. The people present just stared at me and smiled. After getting to know their ways better, I realized that they thought I was talking too much.In my own culture, we express meaning mainly through words, but people there sometimes feel too many words are unnecessary.
Even within Northern Europe, cultural differences can cause serious problems.Certainly, English and German cultures share similar values; however, Germans prefer to get down to business more quickly. We think that they are rude. In fact, this is just because one culture starts discussions and makes decisions more quickly.
People from different parts of the world have different values, and sometimes these values are quite against each other. However, if we can understand them better, a multicultural environment (多元文化环境) will offer a wonderful chance for us to learn from each other.

As a college student majoring in engineering, Tom was in bad need of an advanced computer, which would cost him an arm and a leg. Tom chose not to upset his parents with this issue because he didn't want to be dependent on them all the time. After careful consideration, Tom decided that a secondhand computer of high quality would also do and he could afford one with the money he had earned by taking parttime jobs.
One Saturday morning, Tom went into a secondhand computer shop. Luckily for him, he came across a computer of the exact model he wanted. Better still, it was nearly brand new and was sold at just a third of its original price. It meant that if Tom bought it, he would still have 300 dollars left. It seemed too good to be true! Out of curiosity, Tom asked the shop owner why the computer was sold at such a low price, “Oh, it's a sad story,” replied the owner, adding that it was from a college student called Steven who was diagnosed with some type of cancer last month and now was badly in need of money for his treatment.
Hearing this, Tom felt truly sorry for the young man who was supposed to have a promising future. But at the same time, he also felt lucky to have this ideal computer for his college life. Without hesitation, he paid the shop keeper, took the computer and went back to his dorm. He couldn't wait to show his computer to his roommates. Everyone in the dorm thought Tom was lucky to have got the computer.

参考范文:
But deep in his heart,he knew something was not going right. When he began using the computer to complete his assignment, he just couldn't stay calm and peaceful in mind, even feeling a sense of guilt. Of course he didn't do anything wrong, but an inner voice kept echoing in his mind: “There's something else you can do.” Tom thought it over and an idea sprang to his mind. The next day, he went back to the shop and asked the shop owner how he could get in touch with Steven.
With the phone number given by the shop owner, Tom contacted Steven and paid him a visit. Handing over the computer to its original owner, Tom said, “I do believe you will need it after you beat the disease.” Before Steven could say a word, Tom added, “And I also have 300 dollars for you. I can take more odd jobs and will get a new computer before long.” Moved to tears, Steven replied,“Thank you so much,my friend! You can keep the computer until I go back to the campus, by which time I think you will have saved enough for a new computer.” Inner peace came back to Tom when he used the computer again.
