In 1580, Galilei entered the University of Pisa to study medicine. Armed with unusual intelligence and drive, he soon became interested in many subjects, particularly mathematics and physics. While at the University of Pisa, Galilei was exposed to the Aristotelian view of the world, the only one approved by the Roman Catholic Church at that time. At first, Galilei also supported this view, like any other person of his time. In 1589, Galilei was appointed to the chair of mathematics at the University of Pisa. And he made his famous experiments with falling objects there. Then Galilei began to write about his discovery of the falling objects, which was against the Aristotelian theory. For that reason he lost his job at the University of Pisa in 1592. But Galilei continued his scientific study. In July 1609, Galilei learned about a simple telescope (望远镜) made by Dutch eyeglass makers and soon developed one of his own. In August, he showed it to some Venetian businessmen who saw its usefulness in sailing and spotting ships. They gave Galilei a salary and asked him to make several telescopes for them. Galilei’s ambition pushed him to go further. In the fall of 1609, he turned his telescope towards space. Using his telescope to explore the universe, Galilei observed the Moon and proved the planet Venus moved around the Sun, which was against the Aristotelian theory that the Earth was the centre of the universe. In January 1610, he discovered four moons moving around Jupiter. He also found that the telescope showed much more stars than the naked eye (肉眼) could see. These discoveries were startling, and Galilei quickly produced Sidereus Nuncius, in which he described these amazing discoveries. Galilei’s great contributions to our understanding of the universe include not only his discoveries, but also the methods he developed and the use of mathematics to prove them. 4.Which subject was Galilei most interested in while he was at university? A.Medicine B.Physics C.Chemistry D.Philosophy 5.Why did Galilei lose his job at the University of Pisa? A.His teaching method failed to attract his students. Each student in the school has their own locker (储物柜) for books and personal items. This convenience saves students from carrying textbooks, and allows students a small space they can decorate with posters and favorite objects. Cheating in any form is strictly prohibited(禁止) in American schools. And in fact, high school students usually don’t cheat. If they are caught cheating, they will have to face severe punishment. Schools often offer football, baseball, softball, basketball, volleyball, tennis, and soccer. Some may even have sports like golf, swimming, gymnastics and cross-country skiing. Many high school students have part-time jobs by the age of 15 or 16, some even earlier. Their first jobs are often baby sitting or cutting lawns (草坪), but later they will likely get a job at a fast-food restaurant, video store, or clothing shop. Sixteen years old is the legal driving age in most states, and students usually want to own a car as soon as they can. Some parents allow their children to drive a family car, and may even buy a car as a graduation present. Others prefer that their sons and daughters earn enough to buy a used car. Many teenagers feel it's necessary to own a car, and will do whatever it takes to be able to drive. 8.Which of the following is banned in American schools? A.Choosing your favorite subjects freely. But hundreds of beaches in Greece now offer a new way for people in wheelchairs to get into the water by themselves. It’s called Seatrac. Seatrac is basically a chair on a moving ramp (坡道) that can carry a disabled person into the sea. It is operated by remote control. Once in the sea, the person can either remain in the chair, enjoying the water, or go for a swim. When the person is ready to get out of the water, the Seatrac system brings the chair back to the top the ramp. Seatrac was invented and developed in Greece. When one of the inventors, Ignatios Fotiou, was talking with a friend who used a wheelchair, the friend said he enjoyed the sea, but didn’t like having to be carried into the ocean. Mr Fotiou realized there must be a way to make it easier for wheelchair users to get into the water. Mr Fotiou worked with his partner and a professor at a Greek university to design the system. Finally, they formed a company called TOBEA to build and sell the systems. The company worked hard to make the system simple enough to be put in place and easy to run. A wooden walkway allows wheelchair users to reach the Seatrac. The system uses solar power. It doesn’t require outside power, and can continue to run even if the electricity goes out. The Seatrac system can easily be packed up and stored when the swimming season ends. The Seatrac system is being used at over 220 beaches in Greece, Cypris, Italy, and Latvia. TOBEA hopes to offer Seatrac in other countries. TOBEA has created a website showing where beaches with these special services can be found. The Greek government hopes that Seatrac will help attract more tourists to the country. 12.What is Seatrac able to do? A.Watch out of the disabled in the sea. B.Choose the suitable beach for the disabled. C.Help the disabled get in and out of the sea safely. D.Enable the disabled to move around the beach freely. 13.What made Mr Fotiou decide to develop Seatrac? A.His partner’s advice. B.His love for the sea. C.his wish to start a company. D.The difficulty his friend faced. 14.What does the author mention about the Seatrac system? A.It is becoming more popular. B.It should be well protected. C.It needs to be fully introduced to the public. D.It is environmentally friendly and convenient. 15.What does the last paragraph mainly talk about? A.Expectations for Seatrac. The 21 came when I was 15. After a few months of planning and 22 , I was ready to spend the second semester of my first high school year 23 an exchange student in Australia. 24 in Perth was one of the most exciting moments of my life. I realized then that there was no turning back. The family I would live with was waiting for me, and it would only be five days 25 the new school year. The school I attended was 26 my school back in the States. I was quite 27 at first, especially never having been to a new school — even in the US. Everything went without 28 , though. The teachers were welcoming and the students were friendly. The most 29 time was travelling with other exchange students around Australia during our semester break. The few weeks we 30 together were full of amazing activities. At the end of our 31 in Australia, we had three weeks to share our stories and help each other deal with leaving. It was only 32 that our last day together was filled with tears. We packed our camp, 33 e-mail addresses and gathered together for a final good-bye. Upon coming home, an open mind was again important. Resettling home took time and 34 , but at last I made it. All the while, I was thoughtful to letting my family and friends know how happy I was to be home and how 35 I had missed them — though the experience is still unforgettable with me. I studied three years in a country school, which is faraway. However, it has a good environment and strict but kind teachers, so I loved the school and all my teachers very much. One Friday, just as we began to read books in reading class at our desks, our teacher, Mrs. Hill, said that she needed to be out of the classroom for a few minutes. She asked the class to read in silence while she was gone. And she said that those who didn’t read books in silence would have to answer to her when she returned. It was well-known that Mrs. Hill was strict. So we had to be on our best behavior. But that Friday, Mrs. Hill hadn’t been gone for ten seconds before some students in the classroom started to talk. From one corner of the classroom I heard Josh ask Nick, “Can I trade my candies for your toy?” At the other end of the room I heard Samantha tell Kayla, “Let’s sit together on the bus for the museum field trip tomorrow.” And so it went all around me, until about half of the students talked with each other. After a while, I, too, forgot about Mrs. Hill’s instructions. I turned back and asked my friend Liza, “Can I borrow your storybook and keep it for a day?” As soon as the words were out of my mouth, Mrs. Hill walked into the classroom. The whole class returned to silence immediately. And we were full of fear. Mrs. Hill slowly looked around the classroom and said, “If you were talking while I was gone, then please stand up.” The guilt (内疚) suddenly weighed heavily on me. “I shouldn’t have talked while she was not in the classroom. And now I should be honest and admit my mistake bravely. This is what my parents have always told me, “I thought. Then, I summoned up (鼓起) my courage to stand up, worrying about the punishment that waited for me. Then I looked around. 注意: 1.续写词数应为150左右; 2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 To my surprise, no one followed me. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ With Mrs. Hill’s encouragement, another student stood up. 根据文章“Accessibility”部分中的“The terrain(地形) is rugged with narrow, rocky trails and steep cliffs.
