Book5 Unit1 Developing ideas What experience made the author write the book? What kind of person do you think the author is? 2 Read the passage and summarize the main idea. What were the grown-ups’ responses to the author’s Drawing No.1 and Drawing No.2? Why do you think they responded in this way? 4 They always need to have things explained. (Para 6) Grown-ups never understand anything by themselves, and it is tiresome for children to be always and forever explaining things to them. (Para 7) Evidence 5 Activity 4 Read the sentences from the passage and answer the questions. Q1: What does the author really mean by these sentences? Q2: What figure of speech does the author use? How does this figure of speech help to express the author’s attitude? … I have had a great many encounters with a great many people who have been concerned with matters of consequence. And the grown-up would be greatly pleased to have met such a sensible man. 6 Most of the adults I have met are the same. They focus on practical matters only and seldom pay attention to imagination or creativity. If I pretend to think the way they do, the adults will conclude that I am sensible and mature. 7 Think & Share Imagination and genuineness. According to the author, what is a child’s most valuable trait? 8 “But, what are you doing here?” And in answer he repeated, very slowly, as if he were speaking of a matter of great consequence: “If you please—draw me a sheep…” When a mystery is too overpowering, one dare not disobey. Absurd as it might seem to me, a thousand miles from any human habitation and in danger of death, I took out of my pocket a sheet of paper and my fountain-pen. But then I remembered how my studies had been concentrated on geography, history, arithmetic, and grammar, and I told the little chap (a little crossly, too) that I did not know how to draw. “That doesn’t matter. Draw me a sheep…” But I had never drawn a sheep. So I drew for him one of the two pictures I had drawn so often. It was that of the boa constrictor from the outside. And I was astounded to hear the little fellow greet it, with “No, no, no! I do not want an elephant inside a boa constrictor. A boa constrictor is a very dangerous creature, and an elephant is very cumbersome. Where I live, everything is very small.”… And that is how I made the acquaintance of the little prince. “Who are you?” asked the little prince, and added, “You are very pretty to look at.” “I’m a fox,” said the fox. “Come and play with me,” proposed the little prince. “I am so unhappy.” “I cannot play with you,” the fox said. “I am not tamed.” “Ah! Please excuse me,” said the little prince. But after some thought, he added: “What does that mean — ‘tame’?”… “Just that,” said the fox. “To me, you are still nothing more than a little boy who is just like a hundred thousand other little boys. And I have no need of you. And you, on your part, have no need of me. To you, I am nothing more than a fox like a hundred thousand other foxes. But if you tame me, then we shall need each other. To me, you will be unique in all the world. To you, I shall be unique in all the world…” “I am beginning to understand,” said the little prince. “There is a flower… I think that she has tamed me…” “Go and look again at the roses. You will understand now that your rose is the unique in all the world. Then come back to say goodbye to me, and I will make you a present of a secret.” The little prince went away, to look again at the roses. “You are not at all like my rose, ”he said. “As yet you are nothing. No one has tamed you, and you have tamed no one. You are like my fox when I first knew him. He was only a fox like a hundred thousand other foxes. But I have made him my friend, and now he is unique in all the world.” And the roses were very much embarrassed. “You are beautiful, but you are empty,” he went on. “One could not die for you. To be sure, an ordinary passer-by would think that my rose looked just like you — the rose that belongs to me. But in herself alone she is more important than all the hundreds of you other roses: because it is she that I have watered; because it is she that I have put under the glass globe; because it is she that I have sheltered behind the screen; because it is for her that I have killed the caterpillars (except the 2 or 3 that we saved to become butterflies); because it is she that I have listened to, when she grumbled, or boasted, or even sometimes when she said nothing. Because she is my rose. ” And he went back to meet the fox. “Goodbye,” he said. “Goodbye,” said the fox. “And now here is my secret, a very simple secret: It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye. ” “What is essential is invisible to the eye,” the little prince repeated, so that he would be sure to remember. “It is the time you have wasted for your rose that makes your rose so important… Men have forgotten this truth. But you must not forget it. You become responsible, forever, for what you have tamed. You are responsible for your rose…” As we grow up, what traits/qualities should we keep along the way? Take note of the tense of each paragraph. Circle useful expressions in the book review. It tells a story about a pilot who has crashed in the desert. Visiting from another planet, the little prince recounts his adventures to the pilot, and the two become friends. …the importance of looking beneath the surface of things to uncover their real meanings… …one of the most memorable characters in the book is… 此处可以适当补充更多useful expressions. 19 1.
