[2024·烟台一模]①A group of scientists from the University of Kitakyushu in Japan has come up with an unusual solution to a messy problem. They’ve taken dirty diapers (尿片), and used them to replace (取代) some of the sand needed to build a house with concrete (混凝土).
②As we all know, making concrete creates a lot of pollution. And it uses a lot of sand. Mining (开采) for sand creates other problems for the environment.
③Siswanti Zuraida had an unusual idea. What if some of the sand in concrete could be replaced with used disposable (一次性的) diapers?
④Diapers are a huge source of pollution. In the US alone, over 3. 6 billion kilograms of them are thrown away each year. These end up taking up space in landfills. In other countries, dirty diapers can be thrown into rivers.
⑤So Ms Zuraida and her team set out to study the problem. They collected used diapers, cleaned them up, and treated the diapers with chemicals to get rid of any bad germs (细菌). Then the diapers were dried and cut into small pieces that could be added to concrete. They found that this new kind of concrete was just as safe and strong as regular concrete. It also didn’t have any harmful germs in it.
⑥The scientists think their idea could make it less expensive to build homes. After all, sand needs to be mined, which costs money. Used diapers are basically (基本上) free.
⑦Perhaps the biggest challenge will be persuading (说服) people to use concrete made with diapers. What do you think? Is it time to change the house?

[2024·大庆二模]Birds usually build their nests with sticks, leaves or grass. But do you know that birds are also building their nests with rubbish these years? The rubbish includes cigarette butts (烟头) and plastic bags.
A group of European scientists looked into (调查) about 35, 000 studies on bird nests. They found that birds have used manmade things in nests almost everywhere on Earth except Antarctica. Some rubbish seems to be helpful. This is why birds “like” putting it in their nests. For example, cigarette butts have special smell, so they can keep insects away and protect the baby birds. Plastic bags are useful in keeping the animals warm, and other hard things, such as paper cards, can make nests stronger.
However, in the end, human rubbish may only bring more harm to birds. The toxic (有毒的) chemicals in cigarettes hurt the baby birds. They may get sick or have shorter lives, according to a study.
To make matters worse, if the cigarette still burns when the bird brings it back to its home, it may set fire to the nest. Pieces of fishing net may also trap birds, and it’s impossible for them to get out by themselves. If the baby birds eat other kinds of rubbish by accident, they will also get hurt. Our bird friends in the air are feeling the bad effects of humans’ polluting the environment.
【导语】本文主要讲述了许多鸟类正在用人类产生的垃圾筑巢,这一做法既有利也有弊。

[2023·永州中考改编]Have you ever noticed plastic waste everywhere in your community? Dr. Aboubacar Kampo has. He was living in Côte d’Ivoire, a country on the coast of West Africa, where plastic is a big environmental problem, compared with water and air pollution. Côte d’Ivoire’s biggest city, Abidjan, produces more than 300 tons of plastic rubbish a day, and only about 5% is recycled. “How can we turn plastic into something useful?” Kampo wondered.
So Kampo, who works for UNICEF, the United Nations Children’s Fund, googled, researched, and then noticed a company in Colombia, a country in South America. Plastic pollution is a problem there, too. Conceptos Plásticos, the Colombian company that Kampo read about online, recycles plastic waste and turns it into big, Legolike bricks(砖)for building schools and houses.
Next, Kampo went to Colombia to learn about the company in person. He toured schools that were built with its bricks and the factory where the bricks were made. “Conceptos Plásticos gave us a solution,” Kampo said. He thought it could help with more than just the plastic problem. It could also improve children’s education.
According to UNICEF, 1. 6 million children in Côte d’Ivoire don’t go to school. One reason is that there aren’t enough classrooms. For kids who do go to school, classrooms are often very crowded. Kids often sit on the floor and can’t stand up because there isn’t room to move around.
In 2018, UNICEF built its first classrooms in Abidjan, using bricks produced in Colombia by Conceptos Plásticos. Right away, the local education improved a lot. People couldn’t believe at the beginning, that the classrooms were made of plastic. But now all the parents want their children in these classrooms. By the end of 2021 UNICEF had built 528 classrooms in Côte d’Ivoire. The new Conceptos Plásticos factory in Abidjan will soon be producing bricks from rubbish collected in children’s playgrounds and on the beach.
The environmental influence is huge. Kampo says it takes about five and a half tons of plastic and just a few weeks to build a classroom. Unlike traditional building, no cement(水泥)is needed. “It’s just a hammer(锤子)and those bricks,” he added.

第三部分 书面表达(共两节,满分30分)
第一节 阅读表达(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
阅读下面短文,完成短文后的问题。
Do you often use plastic straws(塑料吸管)?You probably use them to drink lots of things, such as soya milk, cola or milk tea. Plastic straws are small but they are a big problem. They are made in 10 minutes, used in 20 minutes and normally remain on the earth for over 100 years since they are hard to be broken down.
But how do plastic straws get into the ocean? Through human mistakes, they are often thrown away everywhere and all gutters(排水沟)in some areas lead to our ocean. Even worse, plastic straws kill ocean life. Once a turtle was found bleeding because a 12centimeterlong plastic straw was pushed into its nose. How terrible!
In fact, around 500 million plastic straws are used every day in the US alone. If we don’t act now, there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish by 2050.
Luckily, more and more people around the world have realized this problem. They begin to think about whether plastic straws are necessary or not when drinking drinks.
So what can we do right now to reduce plastic pollution? The simplest way is to say “no”to singleuse plastic, like straws. For example, next time if you go to a restaurant, make sure you order your drink without a straw. There are reusable straws instead.
Some coffee houses have started to offer strawless cups and paper straws instead of plastic straws in Shanghai and Shenzhen. And some fastfood restaurants have also taken action to reduce the use of the plastic straws. It is hoped that more businesses and customers will work together to protect our environment.

To reduce white pollution we should use fewer plastic bags
when going shopping. Use cloth bags instead. We should try to
reuse old textbooks, so people needn’t cut down more trees to
make paper. In order to save energy we should use the lift less
and take the stairs instead. We should also save water and
electricity. And we should plant more trees so that the air will
be fresher. Besides, it will be better if we walk or ride a bike to
school.
In fact, even the simplest everyday activities can make a difference to the environment. I believe that by working together we can make the world a better place to live in.
