Dear Bill,
I’m more than glad that you are so interested in learning Chinese. Two courses are provided for foreigners—one is Listening and Speaking, the other is Story Reading and Writing. I advise you to choose the latter one.
Compared to Listening and Speaking, which is just teach you some simple daily dialogues, Story Reading and Writing can take you to enjoy more skills of the use of Chinese. Besides, this course takes place on Friday nights, just taking up your little spare time. What’s the most important is that it is taught both in Chinese and English, which makes no difficulty for you to understand what the teachers explain in classes.
Hope my suggestions can be of great help to you.
Yours,
Li Ming

In the fall of 1903, O. Henry was living in a room at the small Hotel Marty in New YorkCity. He had published a few stories in local magazines, but was still relatively unknown when editors at the New York World newspaper sent a young reporter 21 (track) down this mysterious writer. By the next day, O. Henry had an agreement with the newspaper to write one story a week for the magazine section of their Sunday edition. O. Henry was the pen name used by William Sydney Porter, who was born in North P. Carolina. At the age of twenty, he moved to Texas, 24 he held a variety of jobs, eventually becoming a bank teller. He married and became a reporter and columnist for the Houston Post. After a few years, his wife 25 (diagnose) with a serious infectious disease, and he was accused of illegally taking the money of the bank where he worked. Future Fashion: Biometric Bodysuits
A team of the Applied NanoBioscience Center at Arizona State University has built prototypes (原型) of biometric bodysuits. They can detect chemical attacks, deliver drugs to their 31 , or even perfume scents if your body temperature rises too much. The 32 version of the Scentsory Chameleon Bodysuit incorporates fuel cells to provide a lightweight source of power for the soldier’s equipment. The civilian one can monitor your heart or blood pressure, deliver interactive games or simply work as a wearable computer. You will even be able to download new colors and patterns from the Web to change your appearance according to this article from East Valley Tribune in Arizona. Both versions should 33 the market within a few years.
Frederic Zenhausern, director of the Applied NanoBioscience Center at ASU, has joined with Ghassan Jabbour, a professor at the University of Arizona, to develop two prototypes of “biometric bodysuits” that contain embedded sensors, power sources, microfluidic devices and other gadgets not normally associated with the latest Paris fashions. Such “smart” clothing could 34 future soldiers early warning of chemical attacks or automatically deliver insulin to diabetics, Zenhausemn said. “The biometric bodysuit shows how electronics and fluidics (流体学) can be incorporated into clothing to perform a wide range of 35 tasks, from highly functional to the aesthetic.” he said.
The civilian Chameleon will have somewhat different 36 . Its biometric outfit demonstrates how miniature electronics could be embedded in clothing to promote health. It is made of clear vinyl (乙烯基) and white plastics to show the placement of various electronic and fluidic devices. In the future, such an outfit could diagnose diseases and deliver medications to the wearer, monitor heart rate or blood pressure, deliver interactive games and other forms of entertainment or 37 as a wearable computer.
Another possibility would be to download different designs from the Internet so the fabric could change colors and patterns, Zenhausern said. And it could all be made to look stylish by the 38 of electronics and high-fashion designs, he said. In fact, the concept of embedding microelectronics in fabrics has 39 far beyond clothing. Sheila Kennedy, a Boston-based architect and visiting professor at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design, sees possibilities to 40 the technology in building design. As an example, she said window shades containing organic light emitting diodes (二极管) could produce electricity from sunlight that would help generate power.

Clothes play a critical part in the conclusions we reach by providing clues to who people are, who they are not, and who they would like to be. They tell us a good deal about the wearer’s background, personality, status, mood, and social outlook.

Perhaps you have used clothing to gain confidence when you 49 a stressful situation, such as a job interview, or a court appearance.

Male administrators tend to judge women more 53 for managerial positions when the women display less “feminine” grooming - shorter hair, 54 use of make - up, and plain tailored clothing. The World Is Our Classroom
Tonight, our family was going out to play under the full moon.
We first started going on full moon walks for ourselves, because my husband Todd and I, loved them and we needed these little doses of moonlight to stay happy and to function in society. But after we became parents, we did this for our children. We wanted Sierra and Bryce to see that there is much magic in the natural world and that most of it is accessible to anyone. We also wanted to show them that it was not necessary to travel far from home to have an adventure, learn, and experience something new. Nearly every month, our family went into the night to “play” by the full moon.
Once we arrived at our location that evening, Sierra and I stood holding hands, waiting to cheer the full moon in its rising. A thin sliver of the apricot (杏黄色) moon poked above the shape of the Blue Mountain Ridge. Everyone stood up and witnessed its rising. More of the moon came out until it turned into a brilliant orange sphere. Todd explained to Sierra and Bryce that the moon makes no light of its own, but simply acts like a mirror, reflecting the sunlight back to us long after the sun has sunk below the horizon.
“Does the moon’s face change?” Bryce asked. I told him that the moon rotates with the earth, but it does not spin on its axis like the earth does. The same side of the moon is always facing earth. We never see the other side, the far side of the moon. Sierra remarked that the moon looked larger and closer when it was rising. I explained that it is an optical illusion (视错觉) because it is so close to the horizon that the moon tricks our eyes into comparing it with nearby objects to create the impression of increased size.
Much of the knowledge that Todd and I shared with the kids had been learned from our past life experiences. If we did not possess the knowledge to explain and educate, we looked it up, either beforehand to enhance the experience, or afterwards, together, after we wondered and came up with a list of questions.
Sometimes all it takes is going outdoors and gazing up at the heavens.
56.What does the underlined word “this” in paragraph 1 refer to?

A.It was a rare chance for them to play under the full moon.
B.They felt forced to watch the moon coming out with their parents.
C.They remained curious and kept digging deeper about the moon.
D.They knew the answers to all the questions put up by their parents.
58.What can we learn from paragraph 5?
A.The author and her husband did not make much effort to teach their children.
B.The author left some questions for the children to get them thinking after each trip.
C.The author and her husband gained all the knowledge from their past experiences.
D.The author and her husband sometimes looked up information in advance to better educate their children.
59.Choose the best sentence to complete the last paragraph.
A.As we stared up at the sky, a brilliant shooting star raced across the sky.
B.Families have to spend a ton of money on entertainment in order to have fun and learn.
C.Opportunities to seek magical experiences and learning is right in your neighborhood.

The Mona Lisa is the famous Leonardo da Vinci painting of a woman with a mysterious smile. This week, the woman parted her lips to whisper an ancient secret.
Scientists using X-rays to examine the chemical structure of a small part of the painting discovered a technique Leonardo used in the work. An oil paint used for it was a special, new chemical mixture, which suggests that the Italian artist was in an experimental mood when he worked on the painting in the 16th century.
“He loved to experiment, and each of his paintings is completely different technically,” said Victor Gonzalez, a chemist who has studied the chemical element of several works by Leonardo and other artists. The researchers found a rare lead compound (铅化合物) — plumbonacrite, in Leonardo’s first layer of paint. The discovery proved that da Vinci most likely used lead oxide to thicken and help dry his paint. The paint in the study is about the thickness of a human hair, lying in the top right area of the painting.
The scientists looked into its atomic structure using X-rays, moving particles at the speed of light, permitting researchers to look deeper into the paint structure. “Plumbonacrite is really a fingerprint of his recipe, as it’s the first time we can chemically confirm it,” Gonzalez said.
Rembrandt, the Dutch master, may have employed a similar blend in his 17th-century paintings. Gonzalez and fellow researchers have also detected plumbonacrite in his art. It’s believed that Leonardo used lead oxide powder, which has an orange color, to thicken his oil paint and speed up drying. “What you will get is an oil that has a very nice golden color,” Gonzalez said. “It flows more like honey.”
But the Mona Lisa — said by the Louvre to be a portrait of Lisa Gherardini, the wife of a Florentine silk businessman — There’s more to her gaze than meets the eye. “What we are saying is just a little brick in the knowledge,” Gonzalez said.
63.What technique did da Vinci potentially use in the Mona Lisa?
A.The employment of tailored X-rays. B.The application of a rare lead compound.
C.A special mixture of oil paints. D.The universal use of atomic structures.
64.What does the use of plumbonacrite suggest about Leonardo’s painting approach?
A.Willingness to experiment. B.Giving priority to conventions.
C.Technically identical output. D.Concentration on paint drying.
65.What is Gonzalez’s attitude towards the use of lead oxide powder?
A.Dismissive. B.Objective. C.Doubtful. D.Favorable.
66.What can we infer about the Mona Lisa from the last paragraph?
A.It still holds secrets yet to be uncovered.
B.It echoes the realities of the worldly life.
C.It’s a perfect combination of old and new.
D.It serves as the key to understanding Leonardo.
Section C
Directions: Read the following passages. Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in the box. Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need.
Many of our most worrying problems, from overeating to not saving enough for retirement to not working out enough have something in common: lack of self-control. Self-control is what gives us the capacity to say no to choices that are immediately satisfying but costly in the long term — that a piece of chocolate cake (instead of an apple), that afternoon in front of the couch (instead of a visit to the gym). 67
The problem of self-control has puzzled psychologists and behavioral scientists for decades. A great deal of research has identified situations in which self-control failures are likely to happen and tools to help people exercise better control. 68 These motivating incentives can increase our self-control, at least up to a point.
Entrepreneurs have also become interested in self-control, as is evident from the many diet and exercise apps and gadgets on the market. To take one notable example, on the commitment contract website stickK.com, users put down some money (say, $200) and state a goal they want to achieve (such as to lose ten pounds in a month). 69 If they meet their goal, they earn their money back. If they don’t, they lose the money.
Tools like stickK.com can be effective, but they are often difficult to implement. My colleagues and I conducted a new research to point to a different solution that may be easier to carry out: using rituals.
70 Players in all sorts of sports have rituals that involve actions such as eating the same foods in exactly the same order before a game. From the way some prepare their coffee to the way people celebrate important life events, like weddings or graduations, rituals are a part of our daily life. And though they may seem useless, or even silly, research has found that rituals are powerful.
A.They have to point out someone to monitor them and ensure they reach the goal or donate the money.
B.Despite our best intentions, we often fail to meet our goals.
C.Rituals are series of steps we take while attaching some kind of symbolic meaning.
D.In the past, my colleagues and I have found that rituals reduce anxiety before stressful tasks, and improve performance.
E.They also need to state what will happen to the money if they don’t stick to their commitments (e.g., it’ll go to a friend or to a charity they do not like).
F.For instance, research has found that people persist for longer on tasks that require self-control when they know they’ll be paid for their efforts, or when they are told that their work will benefit others.

Absent-mindedness
“Most events of absent-mindedness—forgetting where you left something or wondering why you just entered a room—are caused by a simple lack of attention,” says Dr. Daniel Schacter, a distinguished psychologist and memory scientist. “You’re supposed to remember something, but you haven’t encoded it deeply.”
“Encoding,” Schacter explains, “is a special way of paying attention to an event that has a major impact on recalling it later.” Failure to encode properly can create annoying situations. If you put your mobile phone in a pocket of a jacket, for example, and don’t pay attention to what you did because you’re involved in a conversation, you’ll probably forget where exactly you put your mobile phone. Your memory itself isn’t failing you. Rather, you didn’t give your memory system the information it needed.
As many people accept, women have slightly better memories than men, possibly because they pay more attention to their environment, and memory relies on just that. Yes, visual cues can help prevent absent-mindedness. But be sure the cue is clear and available. If you want to remember to take a medication with lunch, put the pill bottle on the kitchen table—don't leave it in the medicine chest and write yourself a note that you keep in a pocket.
Lack of interest can also lead to absent-mindedness. “A man who can recite sports statistics from 30 years ago may not remember to drop a letter in the mailbox,” says Zelinski, a scientist from New York University. There are many cases in life where women can remember prices of bags of different brands while they tend to forget the specific place where they put their bags.

13.A.Their taming for circuses and zoos.
B.The destruction of their natural homes.
C.Man’s lack of knowledge about their behavior.
D.Their natural habit of living in small groups.
【答案】11.A 12.A 13.B
The Asian elephant is one of the world’s rarest animals. Unfortunately, its sad condition is not as well popularized as that of the African elephant. This is because Asian elephants’ ivory supplies only a small percentage of the world’s ivory trade. Besides, we know very little about Asian elephants. They live in the remote forests of southern Asian. And it’s therefore very difficult to study them. Most knowledge of Asian elephants is from those that have been captured or tamed. Asian elephants are easier to tame than African elephants. The elephants you see in the circuses and zoos are nearly always Asian. The main reason for the decline of Asian elephants is the loss of their forests. The huge increase in human population has caused the destruction of Asian forests for human occupation. As a result, Asian elephants are compelled to scatter in different areas. Originally, they lived all over the continent. But now there are only small isolated populations left. These isolated elephant populations face greater danger of extinction. Wild Asian elephants are threatened by illegal capture for taming. They are also killed for ivory and skin. Elephants are shot in the forests along the border between Thailand and Burma. And their skins are sold to factories in Bangkok. The skin is made into shoes, boots, suitcases, wallet, etc. for sale to tourists.
Questions:
1. What’s the difference between the Asian elephant and the African elephant?
2. Where does most knowledge of Asian elephants come from?
3. What is the main cause of the decline of Asian elephants?

【答案】14.B 15.C 16.C
Both John and Sue joined the staff of a successful public relations firm in New York during the same year. They had just completed their PR degrees at a nearby university and were thrilled to be hired by one of the finest PR firms in the city. John’s first assignment was to create a promotion campaign for a client who was putting a new game on the market. Initially Sue was assigned to work with a sportswear company on a marketing concept for its newest line of clothing. As time passed and work with their respective first clients became more and more difficult, John and Sue realized that they had been assigned two of the toughest clients in town. Although John completed his assignments quickly and successfully, he was very angry when he learned that the boss had deliberately assigned him a difficult client. In response he not only complained to his colleagues but also to the boss’s secretary. Sue, on the other hand, had a more difficult time satisfying her first client and she took several additional months to actually complete the assignment. However, she just laughed when she heard that the boss had made the assignment purposely. Over the next two years, John worked reluctantly with each assignment and problem that he encountered. Sue accepted each assignment cheerfully. And when problems arose, she responded with her characteristic “No problem, I can handle it.” Although Sue took longer to complete her projects than John and both were equally successful on the assignments they completed, Sue was given the first promotion when there came a vacancy.
Questions:
1. What’s the relationship between John and Sue now?
2. Why was John angry after he finished his first assignment?

(A)
The World Is Our Classroom
A.Going on a hike through the forest.
B.Going outdoors to watch full moon.
C.Visiting a museum to learn about space.
D.Traveling far from home to have an adventure.
57.Which of the following statements is true about the children on the family outing?
D.The wonder state often occurs when you don’t quite understand what or why something is.

The same side of the moon is always facing earth. We never see the other side, the far side of the moon. Sierra remarked that the moon looked larger and closer when it was rising.(‘月亮的脸会变吗?’

【答案】63.B 64.A 65.D 66.A
根据第三段“The researchers found a rare lead compound (铅化合物) — plumbonacrite, in Leonardo’s first layer of paint. The discovery proved that da Vinci most likely used lead oxide to thicken and help dry his paint.”(研究人员在达·芬奇的第一层画作中发现了一种罕见的铅化合物——plumbonacrite。
根据文章第三段“He loved to experiment, and each of his paintings is completely different technically”(他喜欢实验,他的每一幅画在技术上都完全不同)可知,达芬奇喜欢实验,故选A。
根据文章第五段““What you will get is an oil that has a very nice golden color,” Gonzalez said. “It flows more like honey.””(“你会得到一种非常漂亮的金色的油,”Gonzalez说,“它流动起来更像蜂蜜。”)
根据文章最后一段““What we are saying is just a little brick in the knowledge,” Gonzalez said.”(Gonzalez说:“我们所说的只是知识中的一小块。”) 故选A。
67.根据前文“Many of our most worrying problems, from overeating to not saving enough for retirement to not working out enough have something in common: lack of self-control. Self-control is what gives us the capacity to say no to choices that are immediately satisfying but costly in the long term — that a piece of chocolate cake (instead of an apple), that afternoon in front of the couch (instead of a visit to the gym).
68.根据后文“These motivating incentives can increase our self-control, at least up to a point. (这些激励可以提高我们的自制力,至少在一定程度上是这样。)”可知,此处是指有自制力的人往往很有动力点,所以选项F“例如,研究发现,当人们知道他们的努力会得到回报,或者当他们被告知他们的工作将使他人受益时,他们会坚持更长的时间来完成需要自我控制的任务。”切合文意。故选F。
69.根据前文“To take one notable example, on the commitment contract website stickK.com, users put down some money (say, $200) and state a goal they want to achieve (such as to lose ten pounds in a month). (举一个著名的例子,在承诺合同网站stickK.com上,用户先投下一些钱(比如200美元),然后陈述一个他们想要实现的目标(比如一个月减掉10磅)。)”和后文“If they meet their goal, they earn their money back. If they don’t, they lose the money. (如果他们达到了目标,他们就能赚回自己的钱。如果他们不这样做,他们就会失去这笔钱。)”可知,此处是指用户需要陈述没有达成目标会受到的惩罚,所以选项E“他们还需要说明,如果他们不遵守承诺,这笔钱会怎么处理(例如,这笔钱会捐给他们不喜欢的朋友或慈善机构)。”切合文意。故选E。
70.根据前文“My colleagues and I conducted a new research to point to a different solution that may be easier to carry out: using rituals. (我和我的同事进行了一项新的研究,指出了一个可能更容易实施的不同解决方案:使用仪式。)”和后文“Players in all sorts of sports have rituals that involve actions such as eating the same foods in exactly the same order before a game. (参加各种运动的运动员都有一些仪式,比如在比赛前按照完全相同的顺序吃同样的食物。)”可知,此处是介绍“仪式”是什么,所以选项C“仪式是我们采取的一系列步骤,同时附加某种象征意义。”切合文意。故选C。

Lack of attention or interest can result in absent-mindedness. Lack of attention refers either to not giving information to your memory system effectively for you to recall it later or to not recognizing visual cues in the environment, in which case the cue should be visual and approachable. Lack of interest causes us to forget what might otherwise be remembered.

V. Translation (第1-2句,每句3分;第3句,4分;第4句5分;共15分)
Directions: Translate the following sentences into English, using the words given in the brackets.
(own)
These roadside coffee shops have their own regular customers.
“这些路边咖啡店”翻译为these roadside coffee shops;“有”翻译为have;“各自的回头客”可用所给的形容词“own自己的”作定语,修饰名词,翻译为their own regular customer。 These roadside coffee shops have their own regular customers。
(which)
There is a lot of misleading/false/incorrect information online, some of which is exaggerated/ overstated to grab your attention.
There is a lot of misleading/false/incorrect information online, some of which is exaggerated/ overstated to grab your attention.
(take on)
After the three-month restoration/renovation/update, the lecture hall/auditorium is equipped with/has been equipped with the top-class visual and audio equipment/facilities, taking on a new look.
分析句意可知,本句中的“经过”可用介词after表示;表示“翻新”可用名词restoration或renovation或 update;表示“三个月的”可用合成形容词短语three-month;表示“报告厅”可用名词auditorium或短语the lecture hall作主语;配备”可用短语be equipped with作谓语,再根据句意此处可以用一般现在时或现在完成时,所以此处用is equipped with或has been equipped with;表示“一流的”可用合成形容词top-class;表示“试听设备”可用短语audio equipment或audio facilities;表示“焕然一新”可用短语 take on a new look,再分析句式结构,因为take on和主语之间是主动关系,所以用现在分词短语taking on a new look作伴随状语表主动关系。 After the three-month restoration/renovation/update, the lecture hall/auditorium is equipped with/has been equipped with the top-class visual and audio equipment/ facilities, taking on a new look。
(achieve)
Compared with similar products, this one has achieved the goals of smaller volume, lighter weight, more complete functions and higher precision.
Compared with similar products, this one has achieved the goals of smaller volume, lighter weight, more complete functions and higher precision.

Yours,
Li Ming
