(2024·浙江绍兴·统考一模)A team of Dutch researchers has discovered that magpies (喜鹊) are using metal spikes (things with sharp points) designed to keep them away from certain urban areas to make their own nests stronger and keep invaders at bay.
Scientists have known for a while that magpies are some of the most intelligent birds in the world, but even they were puzzled by their amazing ability to adapt to hostile urban environments. It’s not unusual for birds to use human trash as tools and building materials for their nests, but seeing them use the very things we humans use against them was nothing short of puzzling for researchers at the Natural History Museum in Rotterdam and the Naturalis Biodiversity Center in Leiden, in the Netherlands.
“I didn’t expect this. These anti bird spikes are meant to deter birds, they are supposed to scare them off, but on the contrary, the birds just use them.” Kees Moeliker, the director of the Natural History Museum Rotterdam, told The Guardian.
One particularly impressive magpie nest was discovered in the courtyard of a hospital in Antwerp, Belgium. It was made up of around 1,500 anti-bird spikes, most of which seemed to be positioned with the sharp point outwards, as protection against invaders. After discovering it, researchers checked the roof and confirmed that around 50 meters of anti-bird spike strips had been ripped off the building, leaving only the glue used to fix them in place.
Birds have been known to take sharp objects, from point y branches to nails, screws, into their nests as protection, but the use of anti-bird spikes is kind of ironic, as they are the very things used to keep them away. To scientists like Hiemstra, this is a sort of “beautiful revenge”.
A few years back, we wrote about rich people in the UK installing anti-bird spikes on trees to stop birds from pooping on their luxury cars, but I guess the birds had the last laugh.
4.How did the researchers feel when they found magpies made use of metal spikes?
A.Shocked. B.Amused. C.Frightened. D.Disappointed.
5.What does the underlined word “deter” mean in paragraph 3?
A.Attract. B.Threaten. C.Raise. D.Protect.
6.What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A.Supporting evidence for the research result.
B.Deeper explanation of the research finding.
C.Practical application of the research discovery.
D.Further exploration of the cause of the discovery.
7.What can we infer from the passage?
A.Birds are the masters of architecture.
B.Birds respond wisely in face of anti-bird spikes.
C.Birds use human trash to make for better adaptation.
D.Birds turn out the most intelligent species in the world.

Ⅵ(2023·广西南宁·南宁三中校考一模)阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
In the first and second grade in junior high school, I was extremely shy, I had friends, but it just wasn’t in my personality to be very outgoing, even when I knew someone. I was afraid I would do or say something wrong, so usually I just smiled and listened to other people’s conversations.
I did well in school and I loved to write. However, I would escape into my writing, where I could be myself and never had to worry about what other people thought of me. In my stories, I was never shy, I often imagined that I was the main character in the story. My teacher, Mrs. Sather, always encouraged me to write more and be myself. She told our class to go after our dreams and dig in with great efforts. I thoughts he was one of the first people to see my inner strength.
One day, she showed us a play she had written and announced that our class was going to perform it. “I’ll begin to choose all the performers tomorrow” she said, “I need someone who is not afraid to be onstage in front of a lot of people to play the lead part of Dorothy. Anybody wants to try?” A few excited hands shot up -- mine, of course, was not one of them and Mrs. Sather smiled. “We’ll talk more about it later,” she said. Then the bell rang and my classmates slowly left the classroom.
“I will never do that,” I thought. But after rereading the play, I was deeply attracted by the story and couldn’t help imagining myself to be the main character Dorothy. There seemed to be a new person inside me, a much more daring, outgoing person who had been hidden all along, just waiting for the opportunity to appear. However, I still felt shy and could never picture myself acting in a play in front of two hundred people. Having struggled for a few minutes, I still did not know how to make the decision.

注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;

Paragraph 2:

【答案】
When I was loading up my backpack, Mrs. Sather asked me to go to her. Smiling gently, she asked if I'd like to have a try. “But I'm not good at acting and I'm afraid to screw things up.” In a low voice, I said. Mrs. Sather patted me on the shoulder, saying. “Don't worry, dear. From your writing I know you are a brave girl inside. All you need to do is overcome your fear and take the first step. You can do it. I have faith in you.” Hearing Mrs. Sather's words, I realized it was time to make a change.
One week later, it was time for me to perform on the stage. I felt really nervous at first. Then I remembered all the hard work that I'd put in over the last week. I devoted myself to the play, studying the character, memorizing lines and practicing before the mirror. Gradually, I became more and more confident on the stage. Through misty eyes, I saw Mrs. Sather, who was smiling at me and looking at me encouragingly. I knew I made it! I was very grateful to Mrs. Sather.

Antoine de Saint-Exupéry
Antoine de Saint-Exupéry (1900-1944) was a French writer and pilot. As a young boy, he was obsessed with aeroplanes, riding
in one for the first time at the age of 12. He spent much of his
life flying and writing about his adventures. Saint-Exupéry’s most successful work, The Little Prince, is one of the best-selling books ever published. The story was probably inspired by his
plane crash in the desert in 1935. Saint-Exupéry nearly died, and wandered around for four days before being rescued. In 1944, Saint-Exupéry left on a wartime mission over occupied France, from which he never returned. Although the remains of his plane were discovered in 2000, his body has never been found, and the cause of his death remains unknown.

But they answered: “Frightening? Why should anyone be frightened by a hat?”
My drawing was not a picture of a hat. It was a picture of a boa constrictor digesting an elephant.

But since the grown-ups were not able to understand it, I made another drawing: I drew the inside of the boa constrictor, so that the grown-ups could see it clearly. They always need to have things explained. My Drawing Number Two looked like this:
The grown-ups’ response, this time, was to advise me to lay aside my drawings of boa constrictors, whether from the inside or the outside, and devote myself instead to geography, history, arithmetic and grammar.
Task1: Read the passage and find out the information and fill in the diagram.

1. What kind of profession did the author choose?
2. Why did the author try showing other people his drawing again?
What were the results?
3. Why did the author choose to talk about other topics with the
grown-ups?
14
Read to answer the question:
I learned to pilot aeroplanes and found geography was useful to me.
Para. 8
So then I chose another profession, and learned to pilot aeroplanes. I have flown a little over all parts of the world; and it is true that geography has been very useful to me. At a glance I can distinguish China from Arizona. If one gets lost in the night, such knowledge is valuable.
1. What kind of profession did the author choose?
15
Read to answer the question:
I tried the experiment of showing the drawing to find out, if this was a person of true understanding. But, whoever it was, he, or she, would always say: “That is a hat.”
Para. 10 & 11
Whenever I met one of them who seemed to me at all clear-sighted, I tried the experiment of showing him my Drawing Number One,
which I have always kept. I would try to find out, so, if this was a person of true understanding. But, whoever it was, he, or she, would always say:
“That is a hat.”
2. Why did the author try showing other people his drawing again?
What were the results?
16
Read to answer the question:
The grown-ups would be greatly pleased to have met such a sensible man.
Para. 12
Then I would never talk to that person about boa constrictors, or primeval forests, or stars. I would bring myself down to his level. I would talk to him about bridge, and golf, and politics, and neckties. And the grown-up would be greatly pleased to have met such a sensible man.
3. Why did the author choose to talk about other topics with
the grown-ups?
17
Task 3: Choose the author’s attitude towards grown-ups and find evidence to support your choice.
1. Grown-ups are more practical than children. They want
to teach children knowledge that will be useful in the
future.
2. Grown-ups are no better than children. They lack
imagination and only care about matters of consequence.
3. Grown-ups are more knowledgeable than children. They
can understand everything by themselves.
They always need to have things explained. (Para. 6)
Grown-ups never understand anything by themselves, and it is tiresome for children to be always and forever explaining things to them. (Para. 7)
…, I have had a great many encounters with a great many people who have been concerned with matters of consequence. (Para. 9)
I would bring myself down to his level. I would talk to him about bridge, and golf, and politics, and neckties. And the grown-up would be greatly pleased to have met such a sensible man. (Para. 12)
Task 3: Choose the author’s attitude towards grown-ups and find evidence to support your choice.
Evidence
19
… I have had a great many encounters with a great many people who have been concerned with matters of consequence.
And the grown-up would be greatly pleased to have met such a sensible man.
Task 4: Read the sentences from the passage and answer the questions.
Q1: What does the author really mean by these sentences?
Q2: What figure of speech does the author use? How does this
figure of speech help to express the author’s attitude?
20
Q1: What does the author really mean by these sentences?
Most of the adults I have met are the same. They focus on practical matters only and seldom pay attention to imagination or creativity. If I pretend to think the way they do, the adults will conclude that I am sensible and mature.
… I have had a great many encounters with a great many people who have been concerned with matters of consequence.
And the grown-up would be greatly pleased to have met such a sensible man.
21
Q2: What figure of speech does the author use? How does this figure of speech help to express the author’s attitude?
Irony(讽刺,反语).
This figure of speech enables the author to indicate his low opinion of adults’ behavior and values by stressing such things.
… I have had a great many encounters with a great many people who have been concerned with matters of consequence.
And the grown-up would be greatly pleased to have met such a sensible man.
22
Learning to learn
Irony is a subtle figure of speech that refers to things one says that are the opposite of what one really means. It has a humorous, emphatic or sarcastic effect.
For example: Fine, don’t buy me an airline ticket. I’ll just swim across the ocean!
It must be delightful to find oneself in a foreign country without a penny in one’s pocket..
When I was six years old, after having read the book 1.________ (call) True Stories from Nature and pondered 2.________ (deep), I 3.________ (success) in making my first drawing, which was a picture of a boa constrictor digesting an elephant. But to my 4._____________ (disappoint), when 5._______(show) to the grown-ups, the drawing was misunderstood. They all thought it was a picture of a hat. In order to help them see it clearly, I drew the inside of the boa constrictor. But they advised me 6._______ (lay) aside my drawings of boa constrictors and devote 7.______ (me) instead to geography, history, arithmetic and grammar.

What were the grown-ups’ responses to the author’s Drawing Number
One and Drawing Number Two? Why do you think they responded in this way?
They thought the author’s Drawing Number One was just about an ordinary hat.
When seeing the author’s Drawing Number Two, they advised the author to change his focus to other subjects such as geography, history, arithmetic and grammar.
Because they lack imagination and patience and just focus on the consequences of matters.

3. After reading the two passages in this unit, what can you
acquire and lose as you grow up?
After reading the two passages in this unit, I have learnt a lot. Being a child or an adult may have its own advantages and disadvantages. As far as I am concerned, being a child is much happier because I don’t take a lot of responsibilities, and I must be taken good care of by my parents, although I have to be supervised by them as well. Being an adult means I will be allowed to do a lot of things that I can’t when I was a child, while I must be mature and strong enough to take responsibilities.
Above all, I can acquire a lot; meanwhile, I may also lose something precious as I grow up. So I hope I will keep a childlike innocence deep in my heart.

A Book Review of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is a novel written by Mark Twain, one of the greatest writers to use everyday English in American literature. It is commonly regarded as one of the first “Great American Novels”. The story takes place along the Mississippi River. Huckleberry Finn is a poor white boy who runs away to escape his bad-tempered father. While hiding on an island in the middle of the river, he encounters Jim, a runaway black slave. They find a raft and sail down the river together, having many adventures. The story tells how Huckleberry Finn’s encounter with Jim makes him accept Jim as a man and as a close friend. The book shows the writer’s view of so-called “civilization”, and reflects the moral growth of Huckleberry Finn. Huckleberry Finn comes to realize that Jim, a slave, is not only a man, but a good man. The book contains much sharp social criticism, especially of slavery and racism.
I think the book is well worth reading. Ultimately, it tells a story showing how everyone seeks freedom, and how every human being is entitled to respect.
