Unit 5 A healthy lifestyle

河马的善良本性
Every year, hundreds of thousands of wildebeest(牛羚) and zebras
come together along the Mara River. They wait to cross the running water to
the other bank. Yule is a park keeper. He watches from the riverside, and
sees a baby wildebeest jump into the water. But he can’t predict what will
happen next.
The baby wildebeest tries to go across the river but the rushing water
sweeps it away. The wildebeest tries to keep its head above water, but it
can’t. Suddenly a hippo(河马) rises out of the water. It is lying in the
water near the baby wildebeest, and it quickly swims after
the little wildebeest. Hippos can be very dangerous so Yule wants to see what
the hippo will do to the baby wildebeest.
The strong hippo uses its body to stop the baby wildebeest’s scary ride in
the river. It takes the baby wildebeest to the other side of the river. Yule and
other onlookers watch the scene(场面) in surprise. “I have never ▲
like this,” he says. The wildebeest reaches the other bank and runs back to
join its group.
Yule thinks the hippo would be too tired for its brave action. However,
it goes back into the river to keep a watchful eye.
“Animals are changeable, and each one has its own character,” Yule
says. “This hippo’s instinct is to help those that need help. It’s just like
helpful people who say ‘Not on my watch!’ as they help others.”

生活在马来西亚
Hi, Kylie,
We are excited to be penfriends with you. Thanks for telling us about
New Hampshire. We would love to visit it someday, especially in winter so
we can see snow for the first time. We don’t get snow in Malaysia.
We live in Petaling Jaya. We have lots of parks, and there are many
things to do.
The best time of the day to do outdoor activities is either in the morning
or in the evening when it is cooler. ▲ We like having fun there, and
we both like riding our bikes, and skateboarding(滑板运动).
When it’s hot, our favourite thing to do is jump into a pool to cool off.
Having ice cream, a smoothie, or any cold drink really helps too. We also
turn on the air conditioner most of the time.
Thankfully, there are plenty of things to do indoors like visiting
museums, cinemas, science centres and the bird park, walking around
huge malls, or playing a board game(棋类游戏) at home. We also like
playing ball games in our free time. Our favourite sport is soccer.
In Malaysia, we have lots of beautiful beaches. Our family’s favourite
beach is at Emerald Bay. If you’re lucky, you can get to see hornbills(犀
鸟) up close. If you visit Malaysia, we will take you there!

与众不同的狼
Outside the Arctic(北极), humans and wolves(狼) don’t always
get along. They often fight for the same living place and the same food.
Wolves sometimes kill livestock(家畜) too, causing many people to
think the animals are dangerous. Humans often kill wolves, so in most
places, these animals have learned to stay away from people.
But here on Ellesmere Island, Canada’s northernmost island, it is so
far away and so cold that humans hardly ever visit. Only a few scientists have
ever studied these Arctic wolves. Because of that, they’ve never learned to
fear humans.
There may be no other places where wolves would let a human sit beside
them like what I’m doing. That’s why I travelled here with a film team. We’re
hoping this lack(缺乏) of fear will allow us to watch these animals and
learn how they live.
A I’ve been watching these nine wolves for hours, keeping a good
distance(距离) between us, so they don’t feel afraid. B They knew I
was there, but they haven’t paid any attention to me-until now. I feel afraid
as we look at each other. C However, I remember that these are still
wild animals. D
Seven small wolves begin to walk to me. They come close to see the
dead(死的) cow. They pass me and get to the cow. Most of the meat is
gone, but there is still much left so that each wolf has something .
Every few minutes, one of the wolves looks up at me. But none of
them seem to be troubled by me. I relax a little as I watch them eat, not
knowing what will happen next.
