Tuesdays with Morrie
Tuesdays with Morrie is an inspirational book winning widespread recognition. It was written after the author was reunited with his college professor Morrie, who was being weakened by a severe illness but didn’t cry in despair or get vexed instinctively. A box of tissues will be needed to get through this book!
Despite being a book about dying, it’s far from being pessimistic. Indeed, it’s crammed with pure joy and transparent hope. As Morrie anticipates his own death, he observes things from a different point of view. As he says, “abnormal values make majority of people tend to get distracted by material possessions and absurd luxuries. Happiness is to be found in simple things, such as cooperating with my college to donate university fees, leaning on Madame Morrie and dance rather merrily, and stroking my grandson’s head with outstretched hand.”
At the end of the book, the author summarizes Morrie’s reflections in a short phrase——“Once you learn how to die, you learn how to live”, which is concise, precise, and to the point. It encourages us to appreciate what we have, to make the most of each day, and to live life to the full.
