Dancing through life
舞出我天地
舞蹈也能跨越文化障礙。当上海的公园里充满活力的广场舞与充满异域风情的乌兹别克斯坦传统舞蹈同时上演时,那会是怎样一种场景?
1 In 2019, I found a special place in Shanghai at Donghua University. Early in the morning at a local park, old people were dancing. It was amazing, and I loved to watch them while drinking my coffee. Sometimes, I would even join them. They didn’t care if you missed a step; everyone just danced and had fun.
2 I’ve been dancing since I was little, back in Uzbekistan, where I’m from. My parents weren’t dancers, but they loved watching me dance to music as a kid. At 3 or 4, I started dance classes. I can still remember my first big performance when I felt nervous but kept dancing even after forgetting some steps. This made me love dancing more and want to get better.
3 Among these dances, one of my favorites is the And Polka, a lively Uzbek folkdance that combines fundamental, energetic movements with entertaining components. It’s a dance that both children and adults adore. When I first arrived in China, I had the privilege of showcasing this dance at a cultural event for international students, introducing my culture to others. It was a compelling experience to teach and share our unique dance form, and it left a lasting impression.
4 At the university, we made a dance club where students could teach and learn different dances like hip-hop and Kpopdances. I joined and loved trying new dances. But I also loved going back to the park. The dancing there wasn’t just about moving, but about old and young people coming together to enjoy themselves and make friends.
5 Dancing, whether in the modern city of China or the soul of Uzbekistan, continues to be the rhythm of my life. It serves as a bridge between cultures, an expression of the human spirit, and serves as a reminder that the joy of dance transcends borders, languages and backgrounds. In every step and movement, I find a connection to the diverse world of dance and a celebration of the universal language of joy, movement and connection.

1“ We believe that no matter what bad news there is in the world, there's also a story of a helper, somebody who’s showing up and making a difference,” says Branden Harvey, founder and chief executive officer of Good Good Good.
2 Harvey founded Good Good Good in2017. Before that, he was a professional photographer. A lot of his work was with nonprofit organizations. Good Good Good shares stories from around the world. Eight staff members, as well as contributing writers and artists, help Harvey tell inspiring stories about social justice, education and animals, among other topics. The articles in Good Good Good reach people through the organization's website, email newsletter, podcast, and monthly print newspaper. A digital version of the newspaper is available at most libraries in the United States through Libby, a reading app. Good Good Good also provides readers with opportunities to take action, to not just feel good but do good.
3 Harvey explained why positive stories are important, especially in difficult times. He was inspired by the late Fred Rogers. For several decades, Rogers hosted Mister Rogers Neighborhood, a children’s television program. He was known for saying,“ When I was a boy, I would see scary things in the news, and my mother would say to me,‘ Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.”
4 Harvey talked about some of the Good Good Good stories that have stayed with him. One is about Terence Lester, an activist and author who was once homeless. Lester started a nonprofit organization called Love Beyond Walls, which provides food, clothing and other resources for people in need. He also created a museum inside a shipping container. The Dignity Museum, which can be transported, helps visitors understand what it’s like to experience homelessness. “It’s really cool that he’s been able to take his personal experience and find a way to make a difference to others,” Harvey said.
5 Harvey added that stories like Lesters can inspire people to help others. He encourages young journalists to look for similarly hopeful stories, especially when events make them feel sad, overwhelmed or nervous.
