Continuing a sci-fi story
Looking at the shared air-cycles, Carolyn lost in thought about artificial intelligence and automation. As a loyal client of AI firms, she reckoned that the value of AI lies in its capacity to analyse vast amounts of data and provide on-demand services. Her AI robot guards are super-smart assistants that will never do illegal or immoral behaviors. She thought it’s also fair to say that nanorobots capable of eliminating cancerous cells are just on the horizon……
Soon Carolyn reached Crater, the maximum security prison she regulated. Everything seemed normal except for a faulty robot-mutt at the front gate, squeaking and hopping. She frowned. “It’s an old model, a mechanical imitation comprising tendons of steel and a simple positronic brain.” But just as she entered her office, a loud alarm sounded and her blood froze. The faulty robot guards had opened the cell doors. “Grab the robots’ weapons tightly and run!” shouted the prisoners.
Carolyn’s heart sank as she reached for her emergency call device. I need to call in the riot police, she thought. But how? Nothing in the prison would work properly now. Seeing the prisoners climbing up the crater-slope difficultly, she gasped. “The gravity-fortifying system still works!” She agilely put up her anti-gravity suit with built-in radio and consistently called her husband on their private wavelength. She was about to be desperate when the door burst open, and there was…Todd! “I came here to bring you the emergency caller and saw the prison breakout, so I activated the device to call in the police.”
“Now we know robots are potentially susceptible to system error and breakdowns are bound to happen sooner or later.” Todd continued. “I know it’s my fault.” Carolyn whispered seeing the police rounding up the prisoners, “When you cited examples to reveal the danger, I banked on AI too much to assess clues as to what is to come later, becoming victims of AI. While AI could be the biggest leap forward in human history, we humanity must maintain and regulate it with consistent efforts.”
