The Hunchback of Notre-Dame
Recent findings in psychology show misjudging personal looks really bothered some teenagers. I used to be so self-critical that only selfie apps can boost my confidence, which can remove freckles, enlarge eyes and even slim jawlines. Plus, I spent most savings on lipsticks and weight-loss pills in pursuit of exquisite make-up and skinny shape.
This kind of obsessive makeover from head to toe made me unable to study intently, which was beyond the comprehension of my roommates in college dormitory. They even make a assumption that I’m a bizarre person. Fortunately, a novel changed my beauty stereotypes.
The heartbreaking story begins with Claude, a handsome and bookish bishop with graceful accent. Outwardly, he is righteous and cares about public welfare. Actually, he is a repulsive narcissist and a timid coward. Out of a frightful motive, Claude sent his loyal servant, Quasimodo, to kidnap an actress. When Quasimodo is captured and tortured in public, Claude heartlessly leaves whilst the actress offers him water with an expression of heartfelt compassion.
To repay her, Quasimodo rescues her from execution when she is later sentenced to death for a crime she did not commit. Quasimodo resembles a savage monster, coarser, more downtrodden, and plainer than a pebble. When your glance travels from his hunched back to monstrous face, you’ll be too surprised to exclaim or utter a syllable. Yet there is so much melancholy and profound tenderness over this poor wretch, and beneath the outward appearance of beasts lies a heart as pure as dew.
After reading, I felt an immense pity for myself. I acknowledged that I was identical to Claude, a pretended gentleman overlooking inner beauty . I also perceived that all external defects can’t hide Quasimodo’s inner beauty. As a famous novelist puts it, “A human being should be entirely beautiful: the face, the clothes, the mind, the thoughts”.
