A Speech Draft:Human and Nature
Greetings, everyone. On behalf of the Ecology Conservation Association, I’m honored to introduce two nature reserves added to the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Halfway between Australia and Antarctica lies Macquarie Island, a perfect habitat for royal penguins and parakeet. However, their population decreased dramatically due to the invasion of rats. Mice multiplied rapidly and developed an appetite for native vegetation, which absorb dissolved nutrients from soil and provide protection in return. Then soil erosion and land collapse killed a substantial number of native inhabitants.
Subsequently, greater chaos occurred for human intervention/interference like releasing virus, to which the pests developed an immunity and their numbers exploded once again. Look at this slide. The satellite images and statistics in postscript won’t fail to give you a visual shock. This incident made it clear that we humans owe it to the island to eradicate the invading species once and for all by dropping poison and setting traps.
By comparison, Shennongjia, a mysterious area also making it onto the List, proves how mankind can coexist in harmony with nature. For centuries, the local villagers provide secure beehives for Chinese bee, a living fossil endangered elsewhere in China. They also collect floral plants to make herbal medicine following the footsteps of legendary Shennong, after whom the reserve is named .
Meanwhile, Shennongjia is awarded special status for meeting two criteria. For the first criterion, its vast range in altitude results in a great variation in climatic conditions, allowing a wide variety of species to thrive and prosper. For the other, it’s apparently a rare location where we can observe the biological evolution of various endangered species, including floral plants, vertebrate and insect.
Thank you for listening. Now let’s come to the Q&A session. You can ask any questions before my departure.
