It all started when I saw a little advertisement in a magazine for teens that read, “Follow your dreams”.
I have always dreamt of seeing other parts of the world, meeting people of different cultures, and communicating in a language that is different from my native one. It was the influence of my dad that made me decide on learning English. He told me that if I learned how to speak English, I would have friends all around the world. So I decided to study the language.
Learning English was like finding gold! Just by learning the language I could read books written in English, make friends with people from Brazil, Switzerland, Italy, USA, Canada, Singapore, Japan, Spain and many more countries. I started attending meetings abroad. I was getting job offers just because I could speak English.
British English has a long history, but I wanted to speak English like an American not an Englishman. Speaking with an American accent is more interesting. One of my teachers told me that the best way to improve my English was to live in a country where English was spoken. After living in the USA, I came to understand that the best way to understand its cultures and its people was by living there for a period of time.
I decided to go to the United States to study and learn how to do business with Americans. I chose California because to me California accent was easy to understand and the way of life was casual; the weather in California was warm and I would be next to the Pacific Ocean. The cost of living here is high, but the spirit in California is international. It is relaxing and peaceful. It is full of action.

London could feel as hot as Barcelona by 2050, with Edinburgh’s climate more like Paris’, Leeds feeling like Melbourne and Cardiff like Montevideo. That’s from a study looking at how a 2℃ temperature increase could change the world’s 520 major cities.
The scientists at Crowther Lab, Zürich, Switzerland, evaluated the world’s 520 major cities and their study shows the dangerous effects of climate change. Published in the journal PLOS One, the study suggests summers and winters in Europe will get warmer with average increases predicted to be 3.5℃ and 4.7℃ respectively. With this analysis on climate change, the scientists want to help people visualise the effect of climate change in their own city, within their lifetime.
Researchers warned London could suffer from the type of extreme drought(干旱) that hit Barcelona in 2008, when it was forced to import drinking water from France at a cost of £20 million.
Lead author of the research paper, Jean-Francois Bastin, said, “History has repeatedly shown us that the general data alone do not inspire the general public to change their beliefs or actions. The intangible(无形的) nature of reporting on climate change fails to adequately convey the urgency of the problem---for example, it is hard to imagine how 2℃ of warming in average temperature by 2100 might affect daily life.”
The scientists found that 22 per cent of major cities in the study will experience the conditions that major environments have not seen before. Commenting on the study, Professor Richard Betts, from the Met Office Hadley Centre and University of Exeter, said, “This study helps to put climate change in the context(背景) of human experience—and more importantly, shows that many places will see the climates that are totally outside of current human experience.”

Ransomware has become a more and more common problem in recent years. In a ransomware attack, the attackers use special software to bring the files on computers into random order so they can’t be used. The attackers say they will unlock the files if they are paid money—a “ransom”.
Colonial Pipeline which provides 45% of the gasoline and other fuels used by the US East Coast shut down on Friday, following a ransomware attack. So far, it’s not clear how much money the attackers are asking for. Now, it appears that the attack was made by a criminal group known as “Darkside”.
Some news groups say that before Darkside locked Colonial’s computer files, it stole top-secret information from the company’s computer system. This is common for ransomware criminals, who usually threaten(威胁)to sell the information if they aren’t paid. This attack on Colonial that is so big and so important to America has had many people concerned. It clearly indicates that a number of large and important US systems can be attacked.
It’s not clear yet if the attackers have only locked the company’s computer files, or if they’ve also been able to take control of parts of Colonial’s pipeline.
So far, the attack and shutdown haven’t affected fuel prices much. That’s because huge amounts of fuel are normally stored in massive storage tanks. But if the pipeline’s shutdown continues, prices could rise.
Colonial says it has begun to re-open some small sections of its pipeline, but that it won’t open the rest of the pipeline until it believes it is “safe to do so”.
For the US government—and other companies that provide services America relies on—the story won’t end when Colonial is up and running again. The attack is a strong reminder that US computer security needs to improve quickly. It’s reported that the frequency of ransomware attacks has increased greatly in recent months. In response, we should focus on the future.

Working out in the gym just isn’t in the cards all the time. Whether you don’t have time, find gyms to be unapproachable, simply don’t like going to a physical gym, or something else is preventing you from going, you can still exercise. 36
Luckily, there are a ton of fitness apps out there. Unfortunately, that can be a bit confusing if you don’t know what you’re looking for.
37 First of all, decide what kind of exercises you want to do. Are you into strength training? Is yoga more your thing? Or do you want a fitness plan that focuses on cardio(有氧运动)? 38 Is it weight loss or muscle toning, or something else? If losing weight is a top priority, look for online fitness programs that have strict routines and meal plans to follow.
What are the benefits of online fitness programs? 39 Additionally, you can learn at your own pace while still getting access to personal trainers, often without paying those pricey trainer fees. You’re also able to start out at whatever fitness level feels comfortable, and with many workout apps offering free trials, you can try out a few before fully committing.
40 Not necessarily. Most online fitness programs and workout apps require nothing more than some motivation and a few feet of open floor space. Very often, exercises on apps can be customized(定制) based on what you do have.
A. What fitness app is best for you?
B. How and when do you use workout apps?
C. You’ll also need to figure out what your goal is.
D. Do you need special equipment to use a workout app?
E. Workout apps allow you to meet your fitness goals at home.
F. They may actually be the motivation you need to get moving.
G. The obvious advantage of workout apps is that you don’t have to leave your house.
