The Interestings by Meg Wolitzer Its title is the name for a group of teens at an arts summer camp. It’s the story of how they do or don’t use their potential as they grow into adulthood. It’s about how friends help you see—and become—yourself. It’s a perfect read in summer when life feels limitless. All the Missing Girls by Megan Miranda Nicolette Farrell’s best friend disappeared a decade ago in their rural hometown. Years later, Nicolette is home helping her father, and a young neighbor goes missing, bringing back the unforgettable past. The story started on Day 15 and finished on Day 1. It’s a perfect summer read: The dialogue is great and the plot makes it a real page turner. 7 Act One by Moss Hart I’d never heard the term “second-acting” until I read Moss Hart’s firsthand account of associating with 1920s intermission(幕间休息)crowds in his teens, so he could learn Broadway jokes and songs for his Catskills summer camp plays. Hart rose from poverty to write classic comedies with George S. Kaufman and direct My Fair Lady.  In the hot summer, reading of his own story is what kept me excited. Who is Maud Dixon by Alexandra Andrews It’s a wild ride following an ambitious writer as she tries to find her feet in the publishing industry. Its absorbing plot makes it a beach read—and the vivid descriptions of Morocco make it a perfect summer escape. 21. She experienced a normal childhood, but at the age of 12, a terrible illness led her to lose her hearing in both ears. “My world was turned upside down,” said Nicole. “I went from being a talkative, joyous child to being quiet and depressed.” However, she came to realize she had to fight when it was determined that her hearing would not return. Under her family’s help, Nicole began to learn American Sign Language (ASL).  A year later, she received an operation that implanted(植入)a hearing device, which brought back some light to her life and she also learned how to adapt to the new life. It wasn’t until she attended Gallaudet, a school for the deaf, that she fully devoted herself to ASL and the deaf community and culture. “Becoming fluent in ASL and having total communication allowed me to feel a sense of acceptance again,” said Nicole. “I found my confidence and ‘visual voice’ in the performing arts.” It was then that she made her first request, demanding subtitles(字幕)for movie theatres in Alabama. After much struggle, Nicole’s efforts proved successful, and today nearly all movie theatres in Montgomery and Birmingham offer subtitles for the deaf. After graduating from Gallaudet University, Nicole continued to use her newfound “visual voice” through attending several activities, becoming Miss Black Deaf Student Union. “By doing this, I want to show that deaf people can achieve much. It’s very important to educate and support hearing families that struggle with making the best decisions for their deaf children’s education.” said Nicole. 24. Tall, long-necked giraffes are famous for their spots. The spots are believed to help the animals hide from their enemies. However, the 6-foot wonder, which was born perfectly healthy on July 31, 2023, at the zoo, doesn’t have any spots. Instead, its fur is a light brown. It is a reticulated(网纹) giraffe, one of four giraffe species. The zoo’s director, David Bright, said, “The last time this happened was 1972 in Japan.” Currently, the young giraffe is believed to be the only spotless giraffe in the world. A giraffe’s pattern of spots is created when the animal is still growing inside its mother, which means that this giraffe will never have spots. It might not have survived if she had been born in the wild. “Being solid colored, she mayn’t be able to hide quite as well,” said Bright. Giraffes are born quite large. This one isn’t quite a month old, and she’s already 1.8 meters tall. Brights Zoo hopes to take advantage of it to bring attention to efforts to protect giraffes. Bright says the zoo hopes to raise money for groups like Save Giraffes Now and the Giraffe Conservation Foundation. Reticulated giraffes are already struggling. There’re only an estimated 16,000 reticulated giraffes left in the wild—a more than 50% drop from approximately 36,000 giraffes 35 years ago. There’re approximately 117,000 giraffes across four species and nine sub-species, many of which are believed to be endangered or critically endangered. So far, the young giraffe hasn’t been given a name. Bright said that they’ve cogitated thousands of names and their meanings before settling on the four available to vote on, which are listed on its website. All of the names are in Swahili, a language spoken in parts of Africa. “Those four are the four we are all really attached to,” Bright said. “So if it’s named one of those four, we’re happy.” 7 【篇章大意】本文属于说明文。 28. Considered. 31. 7 D Most people can readily picture images inside their head—known as their mind’s eye. But this year scientists have described a condition, aphantasia, in which some people are unable to visualise mental images. Niel Kenmuir, from Lancaster, has always had a blind mind’s eye. He knew he was different even in childhood. “My father, when I couldn’t sleep, told me to count sheep, and he explained what he meant, I tried to do it and I couldn’t,” he says. “I couldn’t see any sheep jumping over fences. There was nothing to count.” Niel admits, some aspects of his memory are "terrible", but he’s good at remembering facts. And, like others with aphantasia, he struggles to recognise faces. Yet he doesn’t see aphantasia as a disability, but simply a different way of experiencing life. Niel now works in a bookshop. His condition begs the question what is going on inside his picture-less mind. I asked him what happens when he tries to picture his fiancee(未婚妻). “When I think about her, there’s no image, but I know today she has her hair up at the back. But I’m not describing an image I’m looking at, I’m remembering features about her,” he says. While Niel is relaxed about his inability to picture things, it’s often a cause of sufferings for others. One person who took part in a study into aphantasia said he’d started to feel “alone” after discovering other people could see them in their heads. Being unable to recall his mother years after her death led to him being “extremely painful”. Children’s book illustrator, Lauren Beard, is different than Niel. Her career relies on the vivid images that come into her mind’s eye when she reads text from her author. “I have a strong imagination, so I can create the world and then keep adding to it so it gets sort of bigger and bigger in my mind. I couldn’t really imagine what it’s like not to imagine,” she says. 32. Why does the author mention Niel’s experience of childhood in paragraph 2? A. To explain the reasons for his aphantasia. B. To describe the hardships he experienced. C. To prove the importance of mental images. D. To clarify the concept aphantasia further. 32. 33. What do people with aphantasia struggle to do? A. Participate in social events. B. Feel good about themselves. C. Depend on their imagination. D. Memorize what they’ve seen. 33. 答案:C 命题立意:细节理解题 答案解析:根据第一段aphantasia, in which some people are unable to visualise mental images以及第三段Niel谈到的When I think about her, there’s no image, but I know today she has her hair up at the back. But I’m not describing an image I’m looking at的信息可知,患有幻像可视缺失症的人无法依赖自己的想象力。 7 34. What does the underlined word “them” in paragraph 4 refer to? A. Images. B. Relatives. C. Sufferings. D. Books. 34. While Niel is relaxed about his inability to picture things, it’s often a cause of sufferings for others信息可知,这里指:一名参与aphantasia研究的人表示当他发现其他人都能在脑海中看到图像之后,他觉得自己非常孤独。 35. What can be inferred about Lauren and Niel? A. Their jobs have led to their different aphantasia. B. They suffer from aphantasia to varying degrees. C. They’re clearly the two extremes of visualisation. D. Their visualisation is not recognized officially. 35. 最后一段谈到:儿童书籍插画家Lauren Beard的工作完全依赖自己根据作者创作的内容所想象的生动画面,她说“I couldn’t really imagine what it’s like not to imagine”。 If you plan on visiting a beach to swim in the ocean, be mindful of some important safety measures. 36 Ocean water is very different from pools. If you are not experienced in ocean swimming, make sure of someone looking out for you – and always have someone with you when going for a dip. Beaches without rescuers tend to be less crowded and quieter. 37 . Protecting yourself from the sun The sun is another risk factor for beach goers. It can damage the skin over time causing a leathery look and, in some cases, skin cancer. So it is important to take measures to protect you before swimming in the sea. Always put on sunscreen 15 minutes before exposure. 38 . Apply lip coating that contains sunscreen also to protect the lips. Sunglasses that filter UV light, hats, and light layers of clothing should be worn to protect your eyes and skin from sun damage. Watch for rip currents(离岸海流) Rip currents can catch you when you least expect it and pull you under. 39 . Calmly swim parallel(平行)to shore to get out of the current, then try to make your way toward shore. Make sure the people on land can see and hear you if you are not able to make it back to shore so you can receive the proper assistance. 40 . But caution should be taken to prevent injuries. Planning ahead can help you enjoy your time and get that breath of fresh air you deserve. A. Look for a lifeguard B. Beware of harmful sea animals C. Don’t fight them, if you are caught by them D. As is known, healthy skin is very important to us E. Make sure it is waterproof if you plan on swimming F. But if you plan on swimming, it simply isn’t worth the risk G. When I was in elementary school, I read a notice on a website about foreigners wanting to make pen pals. I chose Mark, a New Zealand elementary school student, who was the same age as me, as my pen pal. I wrote him an email, using the simple English I learned. Soon, he replied, saying he was happy to become my pen friend. Ever since, we’ve been good friends. We’ve always encouraged each other and learned a lot from each other. My friendship with Mark has confirmed the ancient Chinese poem: if you have a friend who knows your heart, distance can’t keep you two apart. 7 Learn and live! 7 $$
