1 Communication is an important factor in managing family conflict. Unresolved disagreements can result in stress for both parents and children, difficulty in everyday interactions, and increased frequency of arguments. While there is no way to completely avoid family conflict, being able to send clear verbal and nonverbal messages and engage in active listening can help lessen the impact and keep it under control. 2 Family conflict can occur between parents and children, between siblings, or between spouses (配偶). How family members approach a conflict can mean the difference between positive or negative effects on the family unit. Productive conflict can help a family become closer and assist members in moving through their problems. However, in its destructive form, it can be detrimental to any relationship. 3 Healthy communication—which includes listening, being positive, respecting the opinions and feelings of others, and staying calm—can help family members be more receptive to each other during a conflict. Open and honest communication can aid in problem solving and can help family members acknowledge any underlying issues involved in conflict. It can also increase the likelihood that the original cause of a conflict will not lead to future problems on the same subject. 4 When family members adopt unhealthy styles of interaction or have difficulty relating to each other altogether, disagreements can become more intense. Examples include exhibiting extreme emotions, changing the subject, making excuses, blaming others, and being rude. According to Leanne Knobloch, an expert in interpersonal communication and conflict resolution, having the same arguments over and over as a result of unresolved, ongoing conflict can cause harmful effects on personal wellbeing and the health of relationships. 5 Once family members learn what skills work during conflict, they can use them in future disagreements. It is important to pay attention to the verbal and nonverbal cues of everyone involved in an interaction. Other suggestions include being open to conflicting views, welcoming compromises (和解) and avoiding negativity during and after the conflict. The expansion of the desert occupied the farmlands, houses and hometown, and tens of thousands of people had to move away. This drove him to fight against desertification, and “regain the land robbed by the desert”. 2 In 1985, when he worked as deputy director of Baijitan National Nature Reserve in Lingwu, he began his mission, leading his colleagues into battle against the sand. Later he became director of the reserve. Planting trees in Baijitan was an arduous task. What’s worse, the battle required the effort of a large number of people, but few were willing to engage in the tough cause. 3 As a result, Wang reformed the income distribution system of the reserve, enabling people to earn more according to the results of their work. He also proposed an annual target: everyone was set the task of making 10,000 straw checkerboard barriers, digging holes for and planting 10,000 trees over an area of 6.67 hectares. 4 He and his colleagues developed an effective method to not only control the sand in Baijitan, but also enable people to gain more income from the cause. At first, they planted sand-fixation forests along the outer reaches of the desert to form the first line of ecological defense, and then planted primary forest belts along trunk canals and roads to form a second. With the dual protection, they were able to divert (转移) sand and water to create fields, upon which they planted fruit forests and nursery (苗圃) gardens—providing another source of income for people. They also planted grass for grazing livestock and developed animal husbandry (农牧业), using the manure (肥料;粪肥) to help fertilize the fields. 5 Over the years, Baijitan, which had bad ecological conditions and fixed assets of only 400,000 Yuan before 1985, has grown to be a national-level reserve with good infrastructure, rich biodiversity and fixed assets of nearly 100 million Yuan. 6 Wang retired in 2014, but he continued to lead people in planting trees on a barren mountain not far from Yinchuan Hedong International Airport—doing so at a rate of 66.7 hectares a year. His work has contributed valuable experience to the prevention and control of desertification in China. In 2019, he was awarded the national honorary title of “Peoples Role Model” at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. [Reading][Check] Choose the best answers according to the text 1. The Hanfu, Tang suit, and cheongsam (qipao) are the three most representative types of Chinese clothing. ·Hanfu 2 The Hanfu is the oldest of China's traditional clothes. It also had a far-reaching influence on neighboring Asian countries, such as Japan and Vietnam. ·Tang suit 4 The Tang suit often refers to a type of Chinese jacket rather than the clothing of the Tang Dynasty. This name came from the overseas Chinese. As the Tang Empire was famous for being rich and powerful in the world, foreigners called the overseas Chinese people “the Tang people” and the clothes they wore were called “Tang suit”. ·Cheongsam (qipao) 5 The cheongsam developed from the Manchu(满族) women's changpao (“long gown”) of the Qing Dynasty. The Manchu ethnic people were also called the Qi people by the Han people; hence (因此)their long gown was named qipao(“Qi gown”).
