Ren Yamin, an entrepreneur who has been deaf since birth, is using technology to make communication for the hearing impaired easier than ever before through the smart glasses — using artificial intelligence and cloud technology to translate voice into text and project it onto lenses.
The idea for the glasses first came to Ren while he was studying at the University of California, Los Angeles in 2005.However, it was not until after his studies that he could begin bringing his idea to life. While working at a tech company called Integrine, Ren learned a great deal about cloud computing and AT technology.Upon leaving the company and establishing Seeing Voice, Ren launched a cloud platform based on AI and deep learning technologies in 2018 called 40DADOW.
With money coming in from angel investors, Ren said the next stage for his company would be raw material purchase and expansion.A classmate from the University of Science and Technology of China, Zhou Hui, who works as a vicepresident at a Fortune 500 company, has provided the parts to make the glasses.
At an event held in Toronto, Canada, all 100 of Ren's prototype glasses sold out.“What I need is not wealth, but to help Chinese who can barely hear, ” Ren said, who achieved more success after selling up his company Seeing Voice in the Shanxi Transition and Comprehensive Reform Demonstration Zone in Taiyuan, capital of the province. The company began selling the smart glasses several years ago, and production bases covering 5.33 hectares were put into operation by the end of 2021.
In the next few years, Seeing Voice will provide 500 jobs and is projected to generate $2.86 million in tax revenue after 2023, local media reported.

C
In the fictional worlds of film and TV, artificial intelligence (AI) has been described as so advanced that it is indistinguishable from humans. But what if we're actually getting closer to a world where AI is capable of thinking and feeling?
Tech company UneeQ is heading for its “digital humans”, which appear lifelike on the screen not only in terms of language, but also because of facial movements: raised eyebrows, a smile, even a nod. They look close to a human, but not quite.
What lies beneath UneeQ's digital humans? Their 3D faces are modeled on actual human features.Speech recognition enables them to understand what a person is saying, and natural language processing is used to work out a response.Meanwhile, another AI company, Soul Machines, is taking a more biological approach, with a “digital brain” that imitates aspects of the human brain to adjust the emotions “felt” and “expressed” by its “digital people”.
Shiwali Mohan, an AI scientist at the Palo Research Center, is skeptical of these digital beings.“They're humanlike in their looks and the way they sound, but that in itself is not being human,” she says.“Human qualities also involve how you think, how you approach problems, and how you break them down; and that takes a lot of algorithmic (算法) design.Designing for humanlevel intelligence is a different attempt than designing images that behave like humans.” She then continues,“If something looks like a human, we have high expectations of them, but they might behave differently in ways that humans just instinctively (直觉地) know how other humans react.”
Yet the demand is there, with UneeQ seeing high adoption of its digital employees across the financial, health care, and commercial sectors (行业).“Unless these sectors make their business models much more efficient digitally, they might be left behind,” says Chetan Dube, UneeQ's CEO.
Some other companies are taking their digital beings a step further, enabling organizations and individuals to create digital humans themselves using freeaccess platforms they provide.“The biggest motivation for such platforms is to popularize AI,” Dube says.
Mohan is cautious about this approach, yet she supports the purpose behind these digital beings and is optimistic about where they're headed.“As we develop more advanced AI technology, we would then have to use new ways of communicating with that technology,” she says.“Hopefully, all of that is designed to support humans in their goals.”
8.According to Para.2, in what respect(s) do UneeQ's “digital humans” resemble human beings?
A.In the way they move around.
B.In the way they act and react.
C.In observation and analysis.
D.In speech and facial expressions.
根据第二段中“Tech company UneeQ is heading for its ‘digital humans’, which appear lifelike on the screen not only in terms of language, but also because of facial movements:raised eyebrows, a smile, even a nod.”
9.Why is Soul Machines'“digital brain” a technological breakthrough?
A.Because it learns to make proper emotional responses.
B.Because it tends to imitate human beings' tone vividly.
C.Because it recognizes the speech sounds it receives.
D.Because it processes the natural language it hears.
根据第三段中“Meanwhile, another AI company, Soul Machines, is taking a more biological approach, with a ‘digital brain’ that imitates aspects of the human brain to adjust the emotions ‘felt’ and ‘expressed’ by its digital people.”
10.In Mohan's opinion, what human quality is lacking in digital beings?
A.Calculating brain.
B.Language skills.
C.Instinctive judgements.
D.Problemsolving ability.
根据第四段中“If something looks like a human,we have high expectations of them, but they might behave differently in ways that humans just instinctively know how other humans react.”
11.What makes many sectors employ digital humans?
A.The fear of falling behind in efficiency.
B.The urgency to promote ecommerce.
C.The wish to spread digital technology.
D.The need to upgrade the health care system.
根据第五段中“Unless these sectors make their business models much more efficient digitally, they might be left behind”可知,许多行业雇用“数字人类”是因为如果这些行业在商业模式数字化方面不能做到更高效,就可能会被甩在后面,即对在效率方面落后的担心。

The Intelligent Transport team at Newcastle University has turned an electric car into a mobile laboratory named “DriveLAB” in order to understand the challenges faced by older drivers and to discover where the key stress points are.
Research shows that giving up driving is one of the key reasons for a fall in health and wellbeing among older people, leading them to become more isolated (孤独的) and inactive.
Led by Professor Phil Blythe, the Newcastle team are developing invehicle technologies for older drivers which they hope could help them to continue driving into later life.
These include custommade navigation (导航) tools, night vision systems and intelligent speed adaptation.Phil Blythe explains:“For many older people, particularly those living alone or in the country, driving is important for preserving their independence, giving them the freedom to get out and about without having to rely on others.”
“But we all have to accept that as we get older our reactions slow down and this often results in avoiding any potentially challenging driving conditions and losing confidence in their driving skills. The result is that people stop driving before they really need to.” Dr Amy Guo, the leading researcher on the older driver study, explains, “The DriveLAB is helping us to understand what the key points and difficulties are for older drivers and how we might use technology to address these problems.”
“For example, most of us would expect older drivers always go slower than everyone else but surprisingly, we found that in 30 mph zones they struggled to keep at a constant speed and so were more likely to break the speed limit and be at the risk of getting fined. We're looking at the benefits of systems which control their speed as a way of preventing that.”
“We hope that our work will help with technological solutions to ensure that older drivers stay safer behind the wheel.”
