First Snow
Mr Robert Lynd once said of① Jane Austen's characters:“[1]They are people in whose lives a slight fall of snow② is an event.” Even at the risk of③ appearing to this fair and witty④ reviewer as another Mr Woodhouse, I must insist⑤ that last night's fall of snow here was an event.I was nearly as excited about it this morning as the children, whom I [2]found all looking through the window at the magic outside and talking away⑥ as excitedly as if Christmas had
suddenly come round⑦ again. The fact is, however, that the snow was as strange and fascinating⑧ to me as it was to them.It is the first fall we have had here this winter, and last year I was out of the country, sweating⑨ in a hot climate, during the snowy season, so that it really does seem an age since I saw the ground so fantastically⑩ carpeted⑪.
The first fall of snow is not only an event but it is a magical event. You go to bed in one kind of world and wake up to find yourself in another quite different, and if this is not magic, then where is it to be found? The very⑫ secrecy⑬ and quietness of the thing makes it more magical.
When I got up this morning the world was a cold place of dead white⑭ and pale blues⑮.[3]The light that came through the windows was very strange, and it made the familiar business⑯ of splashing and shaving⑰ and brushing and dressing very strange too. Then the sun came out⑱, and by the time I had sat down to breakfast it was shining bravely and flushing⑲ the snow with delicate pinks⑳.The diningroom window had been transformed intoeq \o(○,\s\up8(21)) a lovely Japanese printeq \o(○,\s\up8(22)).The little plum treeeq \o(○,\s\up8(23)) outside, [4]with the faintlyeq \o(○,\s\up8(24)) flushed snow liningeq \o(○,\s\up8(25)) its branches and artfullyeq \o(○,\s\up8(26)) disposedeq \o(○,\s\up8(27)) along its trunk, stood in full sunlighteq \o(○,\s\up8(28)).
The light;“made the familiar business ...very strange too”是“make+宾语+宾语补足语”结构。
An hour or two later everything was a cold sparkleeq \o(○,\s\up8(29)) of white and blue. The world had completely changed again. The little Japanese prints had all disappeared.I looked out of my study window, over the garden, the field, to the low hills beyond, and the ground went on and oneq \o(○,\s\up8(30)), the sky was thick grey, and all the trees so many black and threateningeq \o(○,\s\up8(31)) shapes. There was indeed something curiously disturbingeq \o(○,\s\up8(32)) about the whole prospecteq \o(○,\s\up8(33)).[5]It was as if our kindly countryside, close to the very heart of England, had been turned into a cruel grassland. At any momenteq \o(○,\s\up8(34)), [6]it seemed,
a body ofeq \o(○,\s\up8(35)) horsemen might be seen breaking outeq \o(○,\s\up8(36)) from the black trees, so many weapons might be heard and some distant spot of snoweq \o(○,\s\up8(37)) be reddenedeq \o(○,\s\up8(38)).It was that kind of landscape.
as if 引导表语从句,形容词短语close to the very heart of England作定语修饰our kindly countryside。
Now it has changed again. The glareeq \o(○,\s\up8(39)) has gone and no toucheq \o(○,\s\up8(40)) of the disturbingeq \o(○,\s\up8(41)) remains. But the snow is falling heavily, in great soft flakeseq \o(○,\s\up8(42)), so that you can hardly see across the shallow valley, and the roofs are thick and the trees all bendingeq \o(○,\s\up8(43)), and the weathercock of the village church, still to be seen through the grey loaded air, has become some creature out of Hans Andersen. From my study, which is apart fromeq \o(○,\s\up8(44)) the house and faces it, I can see the children flattening their noses against the window, and there is running througheq \o(○,\s\up8(45)) my head a rhymeeq \o(○,\s\up8(46)) I used to repeat when I was a child and flattened my nose against the cold window to watch the falling snow:
Snow,snow faster:
White alabaster!
Killing geeseeq \o(○,\s\up8(47)) in Scotland,
Sending featherseq \o(○,\s\up8(48)) here!
