Someone is playing a murderer, and the murderer is among you. Everybody is keeping secrets. Who can you trust? Seven hours later, 21-year-old Li Xiang is still playing Live Action Role.
Live Action Role Playing (LARP) is a game. It’s just like you’re playing in a film. The film is about a murder mystery . People like to call it “Jubensha”. It usually takes place among a group of 4—12 players in a real scene. The players choose their characters and stories first. And then, they dress up and play their story. But each player only knows his or her own story. They try to find out who is the murderer in the game. The game usually lasts for 3-5 hours per time.
The number of players of LARP grew very fast from 2016 to 2020. Why? Maybe there are not enough colourful social activities open to young people today. “I feel relaxed. It gives me a rest from my busy life. The feeling is like watching a movie, but the experience is more exciting,” Li Xiang says.
For a growing number of players, role-playing is also a way of making friends. Players talk with each other and work together to find out the murderer.
Huo Xin, a lover of LARP, says, “We often watched films and went for drinks or shopping. There weren’t many fun activities out there. But now LARP can offer a new social experience to people to make new friends.” It is young people’s way of living another life out of their busy work.
