In 1992,Eduard Seitan moved to the United States from his homeland,Romania, when he was 19 years old — and didn't speak a word of English.About 25 years later,he succeeded in owning 9 restaurants and food supply businesses in Chicago,Illinois. But then business was bad.He had to close some of the restaurants. After that,he planned to get involved in something else — saving animals!
It started several years ago when Seitan began volunteering as a pilot in a nonprofit called Pilots N Paws, which provides an environment in which volunteers can come together and arrange for flights to rescue animals in danger. On its website,Pilots N Paws says its efforts have led to the rescue of over 150,000 animals.Seitan himself has flown over 25 missions and has successfully transported about 60 animals.
A few days later after he joined the organization,he flew his first mission.A dog named Phoebe was heading for a kill shelter.Seitan's part of the mission was to fly the dog to Missouri and then another pilot was to fly her to her new home in Idaho.Recently, the dog's new owner,a blind woman, sent Seitan a picture of Phoebe and her together. The woman's husband wrote that Phoebe has brought great happiness to his wife's life.
After that first mission,Seitan was hooked (着迷的).He wanted to save more dogs and other pets and extended his animal charity to his restaurant business.Seitan and his partners later started their own program to help their employees find their adoptive dogs.He has put his time, money, and energies into helping these animals. He says it's his way of helping.“We all give back to the community in our own ways.Everyone does something. And this is my way.”

(2024·潍坊一中高二期)Coral reefs are an important part of sea life and sustain it by providing shelter and habitat for various organisms. They also supply and recycle nutrients as well as enable a growing fish population, along with other species, for a healthy and diverse ecosystem. However, the rise in average water temperatures due to climate change has resulted in more frequent and longtime coral bleaching(珊瑚白化) events that damage coral reefs' health, causing fish and other sea species to abandon them.
In order to restore this delicate ecosystem, scientists from the UK and Australia conducted a study that involved using loudspeakers underwater near damaged coral reefs to make them sound healthy and attract fish, potentially kickstarting (重振) the natural recovery process of coral reefs and their dependent life forms. The location for this experiment was the Great Barrier Reef in the Coral Sea,found alongside the east coast of Queensland, Australia. The site is noted for the largest coral reef system in the world.
“Healthy coral reefs are remarkably noisy places—the crackle (噼啪声) of snapping shrimp and the whoops and grunts of fish. Young fish concentrate on these sounds when they're looking for a place to settle,” said Steve Simpson, a coauthor of the study and a professor at the University of Exeter.
After loudspeakers were used to copy such sounds, parts of dead coral reefs were found to attract twice as many fish, compared to places where no sounds were played. “These returning fish are vital for coral reefs to function as healthy ecosystems. Boosting fish populations in this way could kickstart natural recovery processes, preventing the damage we're seeing on many coral reefs around the world,”said the lead author, Tim Gordon.

10.Why are Steve Simpson's words quoted?
A.To provide some findings of the study.
B.To show the progress of the experiment.
C.To explain reasons for the new approach.
D.To give another solution to the problem.
11.What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A.The attempts are in vain.
B.Natural recovery is impossible.
C.Initial success has been achieved.
D.The coral reefs have returned to normal.

Plants don't have ears or a central nervous system, but new research out of the University of Missouri has demonstrated that they might still have the ability to “hear”.More specifically, plants have been shown to exhibit an immune response (免疫反应) to the mere sound of a hungry insect.
For the study, researchers played the sound of a caterpillar chewing to a group of plants, which caused slight vibrations (振动) on the plants' leaves. The plants were able to recognize these vibration patterns as danger, and responded by mounting the appropriate immune response. In other words,it appears that plants can “hear” themselves being chewed on.
Researchers assume that plants achieve this remarkable ability thanks to proteins that respond to pressure found within their cell membranes.Vibrations cause pressure changes within the cell, which can change the behavior of the proteins; however, additional study will be required to confirm or deny this theory.
Once researchers identify the exact mechanisms at play in this process,it could lead to advances in crop protection.Farmers could potentially learn to use sound to cause a plant's natural chemical defenses against insect threats, rather than turning to poisonous chemicals.
“We can imagine applications of this where plants could be treated with sound or genetically engineered to respond to certain sounds that would be useful for agriculture,” said study author Heidi Appel.
The study adds to the growing list of ways that plants have been shown to sense their environments. They are not the boring organisms that many people assume they are. For instance, some plants are able to communicate with each other and signal upcoming danger to their neighbors by releasing chemicals into the air.Plants can respond to light (think about sunflowers) and temperature. Some can even respond to touch, such as the Venus flytrap (捕蝇草),which snaps shut when an insect stimulates its hairs.
12.Why did researchers carry out the study?
A.To find out if plants can react to sounds.
B.To learn how plants recognize dangers.
C.To discover if plants can shake their leaves.
D.To see how plants improve immune systems.
根据第一段中的“More specifically plants have been shown to exhibit an immune response to the mere sound of a hungry insect.”
答案 A
13.What's the potential use of researchers' discovery?
A.To remove insects.
B.To protect crops.
C.To treat plant diseases.
D.To produce chemicals.
根据第四段中的“Farmers could potentially learn to use sound to cause a plant's natural chemical defenses against insect threats, rather than turning to poisonous chemicals.”
14.What does the author intend to tell us in the last paragraph?
A.There are more plants than we know.
B.Plants are more active than we think.
C.Plants fit in well with their environments.
D.Lots of secrets about plants remain unclear.
15.What can be the best title for the text?
A.Can plants “talk” with each other?
B.How do plants make use of sounds?
C.Can plants “hear” themselves being eaten?
D.How do plants defend themselves against attacks?
通读全文,特别是第一段中的“new research out of the University of Missouri has demonstrated that they might still have the ability to‘hear’”可知,密苏里大学的一项新研究表明,植物可能具有“听”的能力。
Endangered Species
An endangered species is a group of animals that could soon become extinct. 16 Many species are nearly extinct and could disappear off the face of the earth very soon if we don't do anything to save them. There are many reasons why species become endangered.
Habitat destruction is the main reason why animals become endangered and this happens in two ways. When humans move into a new area, the animals' habitat is destroyed and there is nowhere for them to live and nothing to eat because humans chop down trees and build houses and farms. 17 Chemicals in rivers and poisons on farms cause the destruction of animals'homes and food supplies.
18 Animals have been brought to the edge of extinction because they are killed for their highlyvalued meat, fur, bones or skin,or just for sport.Overfishing has resulted in many large sea creatures like whales and sharks becoming endangered species.
19 We should take care not to pollute natural areas, and farmers or companies who destroy animal habitats should face severe financial penalties. The public can help out by refusing to buy any products made from these animals' body parts.Governments can help, too,by making it against the law to hunt, fish or trade in endangered species. They can also provide funding for animal sanctuaries,to protect animals from extinction by breeding more endangered animals, which they later release into the wild. 20
A.Animal habitats are also destroyed because of pollution.
B.Endangered species are also the result of hunting and fishing.
C.Eventually, all the creatures on Earth will enjoy being together.
D.Recent changes, however, have helped to improve the situation.
E.So what can individuals and governments do to protect endangered species?
F.Extinction happens when the last of the species has died out and there will be no more.
G.If we all cooperate and take these steps,we will protect these animals for future generations.

Tenyearold Sami loved to visit his grandfather's house. The house was near the beautiful blue sea.At the seaside stood thick and tall coconut trees with green coconuts(椰子) hanging on them. When the coconuts fell down,Sami would break them open and drink the coconut water.Sami liked to play under the trees. It was always great fun spending the holidays at Grandpa's place.
This winter vacation,Sami was surprised when he came to his grandfather's village. The trees decreased dramatically and there were hardly any trees left.He saw houses built near the sea.People had cut down many palm trees and there was hardly any greenery left.
Grandpa's house was different. He never allowed his trees to be cut.He hugged each palm tree in his courtyard. He also named the two big trees near the front door—one was Petu, and the other Betu.He had planted them with his own hands and today they had become large, massive trees with thick trunks. They were tall and green and gave the sweetest, juiciest coconuts.
One night,Sami was awakened by a strange sound. He could not sleep. He tossed and turned(辗转反侧) in bed.Suddenly, the ground shook as if the earth was splitting. He sat up straight and then ran to Grandpa. He clung(紧抱) to his grandpa.Grandpa cried out,“That's an earthquake! It's an earthquake!” They ran outside the house. They thought that that would be safe.
Suddenly, there was a loud sound; the earth was not splitting but the sea was roaring.Subsequently, people were shouting, screaming and crying,“The sea is rising! The sea is rising!” The villagers started running away from the beach.Sami watched dumbstruck(惊呆的).
The waves were rising higher and higher.Sami thought,“How big the waves are!” He went into the house again and saw the water coming in from all sides. He was scared.
Sami remembered his mother telling him long ago,“You must always get out of the house if the floods come too near.” He ran outside the house with Grandpa. But the water poured in.
Waves about twelve meters high came in,drowning everything.Water was all around and everywhere.
Grandpa held Sami's hand tightly but a huge wave separated them.
“Sami,Sami!” Grandpa cried.“Don't be scared,little one! Come to me,quickly!”
One possible version:
Grandpa held Sami's hand tightly but a huge wave separated them.Grandpa fought the waves and strived to catch Sami, but failed.Sami drifted away! He struggled to keep his head above the water. The water pushed him ahead.Fortunately,he caught a coconut tree in his courtyard. He panicked and screamed out at Sami but could not see him.He clung to the tree while the sea water was all around. In the hope of seeing Sami,Grandpa climbed higher up the tree. The water carried Sami round and round.
“Sami,Sami!”Grandpa cried.“Don't be scared, little one!Come to me,quickly!” “But Grandpa,I can't swim!” Another wave came with terrifying speed and force.Sami cried in despair.Suddenly,Sami felt himself thrown onto the top of a tree.He immediately held it! Looking around,he saw everything was terribly destroyed;but in the near distance, his grandpa was on another tree! Soon it was calm;both Grandpa and Sami came down from the trees and rushed to hug each other, and then they hugged the trees with tears of gratitude.
