But every culture’s funny bone is tickled a different way. Humor is based on shared experiences and background knowledge. As a result, non-Americans have a hard time seeing why American jokes are funny, even if they know what the words mean. But if you know what to look for, you can learn to appreciate American humor. The pun, or the play on words, is a basic part of American humor. Puns are based on words that have a double meaning or words that sound alike. For example, one man saw an expensive car wrapped around a tree after an accident. He said, “ That’s the way the Mercedes Benz!” The obvious pun is that Benz sounds like bends. Some people consider the pun a low form of humor, but many Americans still enjoy “pun”-ishing each other. Other types of American humor are based on language, too. Knock-knock jokes, popular with children, follow a standard format: Knock, knock! Who’s there? Dozen. Dozen who? Dozen (Doesn’t ) anybody want to let me in? Riddles have been around for thousands of years. Americans also enjoy this kind of question-and-answer humor: What is black when it’s clean and white when it’s dirty?A blackboard. What asks no questions but gets many answers?A doorbell. What starts with T, ends with T and is full of T(tea)? a teapot. 23 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 People in America like making each other laugh. Even if they are not professional comedians, mots people think they have a good sense of humor. A favorite American style of joking around is “pulling somebody’s leg” . That means telling someone a story, which is untrue--maybe, even a “tall tale”--while keeping a straight face. At other times, Americans use funny voices or sound effects to spice up a story. Their body language and facial expressions add to the humor. Sometimes, though, people in America make jokes about others. Mothers-in-law, politicians, teachers and ethnic groups are the target of many jokes. Here’s one: An absent-minded college professor left a not on his office door that said, “I’ll be back in one hour.” when he returned, he read the note and sat down to wait for himself. Get it? Making fun of others like this might reflect just a playful attitude. But it can also reflect jealousy, anger of resentment. While these jokes are just for fun, they may not be funny to everyone--especially the target. America is a funny place. If you need a laugh, it’s not far away. Just pick up a newspaper and scan the funny pages for your favorite comic strip. Or turn on the TV and watch a comedy show. Mail a smile to a friend by sending a humorous greeting card. And watch for amusing situations around you in real life. Telling stories about funny experiences is a great to brighten up someone’s day. Hey, did you hear about the time I ... 1. However it is often difficult for foreigners to understand their jokes. The main point to remember is that the Britsh often use understatement. Understatement means saying less than you think or feel. For example, if someone get wet in a shower of rain, he might say, “It's a little damp (潮湿的) outside" Or, if someone is very impolite and shouts at another person, someone else might say, "She isn't exactly friendly. " Understatement is often used in an annoying situation or to make another person look silly. Understatement plays an important part in British humor. Another key to understanding British humor is that the British like to make fun of themselves as well as others. They often laugh about the silly things that happen to our everyday life when someone falls over in the street. They also like to make jokes of people from different classes of society. They like to make jokes about their accents (口音), the way they dress and the way they behave. What's more, the British love to watch comedies (喜剧) about people who do not know how to behave in society. The famous Mr Bean is a good example of this kind of humor. Mr Bean is the role played by British actor Rowan Atkinson in 1990. Mr Bean doesn't talk often, and instead he uses his body movement and facial expressions to make people laugh. Perhaps what makes Mr Bean so funny is that he does things that adults in the real world wouldn’t do. Mr Bean is popular in many countries round the world because you do not have to speak English to understand the humor. As a result, British sense of humor has become well known to many people. l. Why is it difficult for foreigners to understand British jokes? A. British jokes cover too many cultures. B. Foreigners cannot speak English fluently C. The British seldom fully express how they really feel. D. British jokes are not as funny as those in other countries. 2. How does the author explain “understatement” ? A. By giving examples. B. By giving instructions. C. By making comparisons. D. By providing explanations. 26 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 3. How does Mr Bean make people laugh? A. By telling funny stories. B. By making fun of himself. C. By copying others ’ behavior. D. By using body movements and facial expressions. 4. What can be the best title for the text? A. Humor Across Cultures B. Developing a Sense of Humor C British Humor in Comedies D. Understanding British Humor 文章来源:维克多新高中英语阅读 6+1 高一 B 标准版 P141 试题来源:维克多新高中英语阅读 6+1 高一 B 标准版 P141 C The power of humor and laughter is numerous. They entertain us and make us feel good. But, above all, we have discovered that humor and laughter are the best medicine. They relieve pain, reduce stress and anxiety, and are anti-aging and longevity facilitators(促进 者).They are extremely necessary for helping us to find and maintain a balance between life and work. However, they are slipping away from us. We have become far too serious. The only ones who still enjoy humor, laughter, fun and play to the fullest are young children. Children tend to laugh an average of 200 times a day. For adults, however, it is a totally different story. In the 1950s people laughed on average 18 times a day. Today, we are lucky if we average between 4-6 times a day.As a matter of fact, a recent study found that people laugh 6 more times in the presence of one person but 30 more times in a group of people. You can get a chuckle(咯咯笑) from jokes you get on the Internet, but it is not the same as belly jiggling laughter (a deep laugh) you get when you interact with others. Socializing(交际) with friends and relatives was much looked forward to. However, this is no longer the case. In fact, the majority of people can hardly find time, nor do they have the inclination towards socializing outside home. They turn to electronic media such as 27 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 television, computers, the Internet, videos, CDs, and audio equipment, which can provide them with instant self-entertainment at the push of a button. The workplace does not fare(进展) much better. Due to the pressures to produce more in the same or fewer hours available and to compete, for example, in a manufacturing field with cheaper labor elsewhere in the world, humor and laughter in the workplace have gradually eroded(逐渐毁坏)away. I have developed a real appreciation, perhaps closer to a strong desire for the power of humor and laughter. This encouraged me to write my first book titled “The Power of Humor” and subsequently my second book titled “Kids Say the Goggonest Things” based on the natural humor, laughter, play and fun that kids experience and they freely share with parents, grandparents and teachers. From writing about humor and laughter, people start to ask me to speak up for them. To date, I have developed a number of humor-laughter topics that I use in my keynote presentations.
