Undersea Adventure
Recent studies indicate that risk-taking may be part of human nature and some of us are more likely to take risks . Psychologists refer to the personalities of these people as “Type T”, with the “T” standing for “thrill”. That’s the case with me. Thus at the age of 18, which marks a new chapter in our lives, not wanting to spend good money on destinations including crowds and discomfort, I went on my initial adventure—to dive in deep-water zone of the Great Barrier Reef, lying on the border of Australia and stretching over 2,000 kilometers.
Boarding a ship adapted from a submarine, we set sail from Sydney Port. The man in charge, Captain Nemo, taught us many first aid guidelines for injuries such as bleeding. I was fascinated by his first aid kit containing alcohol, plasters, thermometer, bandage, cheese cloth, cotton wool, and rubber gloves, but I was not permitted to touch. We spent days fishing and playing cards, happily unaware that we arrived the dive site ahead of schedule.
And now, how can I look back upon the impression left upon me by that walk under water? Words are not enough to relate such wonders! 30 feet beneath the surface, I no longer felt the weight of my thick helmet, inside which my head shook like a nut in its shell. The solar rays shone through the watery mass easily, and consumed all colour, and I clearly distinguished objects at a distance of 150 yards. Beyond that the colors darkened into fine shades of deep blue, and gradually disappeared. Truly this water which surrounded me was but another air heavier than the Earth’s atmosphere, but almost as clear.
We were walking on fine, even sand, not wrinkled, as on a flat shore, which keeps the impression of the waves. This dazzling carpet, really a reflector, drove away the rays of the sun with wonderful intensity, which accounted for the vibration which passed through every atom of liquid. Shall I be believed when I say that, at the depth of thirty feet, I could see as if I was in a broad day light. I could see schools of unusual fish and the most lovely residents: the thousands of seals including some adult males.
What I get from this adventure is not just sheer joy, but confirmation of my beliefs: we humans are but nature’s servants attempting to control nature, which delights and astonishes us with its wonders. Diving brings into focus what’s important to us.
