We make such choices every day.

Why Do Flowers Open and Close at Different Times?
We have known for a long time that the flowers of different plants open and close at different times of the day. But no one really knows why flowers do this at special times. The question isn't as easy as we might think, as recent experiments have shown. In one experiment, flowers were kept in total darkness all the time. We might think that the flowers, without any information about the day, wouldn't open as they usually do. But in fact, they still opened at the usual time. This has shown that they have some special ways to know the time.
Their sense of time doesn't depend on the information from the outside world. It's inside them: a kind of "inside clock". This discovery might not seem very important at first. But later, it's found that not only plants but also animals including humans have this "inside clock" that controls the work of their bodies and influences their activities. Humans, then, are also affected by this mysterious power. Whether we like it or not, it influences things in our life like our need for sleep or food.

Who Invented the First Sandwich?
Many people like to eat sandwiches, but have you ever wondered who made the first sandwich?
Some people think it was a rich man named John Montagu. He lived in the town of Sandwich, England. John Montagu was interested in card games. In this way, he could eat while playing card games. Then people started to eat this kind of food – sandwich.
However, the French people believe this story is not true. They say they invented the sandwich long before John Montagu did. Farm workers and travelers in France put several pieces of meat or fish between two pieces of bread so that they could have something easy to eat when working or traveling. They didn't give the food a name, so people don't know it was the French who first made a sandwich.

Mark Zuckerberg and His Wife's Donation
The leader of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg, and his wife, Priscilla Chan, said they would give away 99% of their money from Facebook during their lives to help other people! That's surprising because most people are willing to give about 3–5% of the money they have.
It's even more surprising when you know they're giving away about $45 billion. That's $45,000,000,000! But don't worry. They'll still have more than $455 million to live on.
They made this decision partly because they recently had a baby girl, Max, and thought about how lucky she was and what kind of world they wanted her to grow up in.
It must be a wonderful feeling to spend so much money helping others. Mark Zuckerberg is one of the 10 richest people in the world, so most of us will never know what that's like.
But we don't have to be super rich to make important changes. Sometimes changes can come from small actions!
Nine-year-old Joey Roth from Louisiana started saving coins he found around his house, in stores, on the street, anywhere. And he started putting them in a jar.
His collection, Jar for Change, has become a community-wide effort and he has raised over $10,000 all from people who dropped coins into jars! The money he raised was used to help mothers use iPads to see their sick babies (who are in a different part of the hospital).

Chores and Children
Do you know that parents' ideas about children's chores have changed over time? Now, parents don't ask their children to do many things at home. They just give them simple tasks like cleaning up toys, taking out the trash and feeding their pets.
But a study shows that chores are very important. They can teach children to be organized and respect others.
Researchers looked at articles in parenting magazines. They found that before the 1980s, both readers and publishers thought that chores helped children respect others. They also believed it was a good way to stop children from being bored and not obeying.
Between the 1930s and the 1970s, children had many jobs to do at home. They needed to prepare meals, wash clothes and look after sick family members.
"One mother's letter described how she taught her four-year-old child to start a fire with matches," said Markella Rutherford, who led the study at Wellesley College in Massachusetts.
In the 1980s, descriptions of children's chores disappeared from parenting magazines.
Nowadays, children's main task is schoolwork. If they do hard jobs, they usually get extra pocket money or toys as rewards. But in the past, parents didn't think it was necessary to give rewards to their children. They were sure that chores were good for them.

The Story of Joe's Job Hunting
Have you ever heard of someone's special job hunting experience? Let me tell you about my friend Joe's story. Half a year before graduating from college, my friend Joe decided to look for a job and quickly got an interview chance. Only three people were selected for the final interview.
The final interview was not complicated at all. The interviewer just had a short chat with them. At the end, the interviewer told them, "All of you are quite good. Please go home and wait for our response."
Three days later, Joe received a message from the company. It said that he wasn't offered the job. Joe felt very unhappy. But in the evening, he told me that he received another message. It said that he had been hired by the company.
In fact, the first message sent to Joe was also part of the test in the interview. The three people got the same message, but only Joe's reply satisfied the company, so he got the job. I asked Joe, "How did all of you reply?" Joe said, "One didn't reply, the other said 'goodbye', and I said 'thank you'."
Only then did I realize that Joe got the job in this way. That is, when you feel disappointed, don't forget to say thank you to the one who disappoints you. Saying thank you shows respect for others' work. So, in the same situation, you might have more chances than others!

On my way there, I bought a hamburger. When I reached the basketball court, I was astonished to see Tom and Jack engaged in an argument. Tom and Jack are brothers, and they love each other and rarely have disputes.
Later, I learned that they were quarreling about who should initiate the ball throwing. I shouted at them to stop, but they didn't pay any attention. A Special Journey with My Sister
When I was ten, my mother was busy with work all day, and I had to take care of my younger sister, Jane. This was a challenging but meaningful responsibility. At that time, Jane was approximately four years old and constantly longed for our mother.
One day, after I had served her dinner, she began crying for mom. So, I dressed her up, put on her shoes, carried her on my back, and walked out to meet our mother. Soon, she fell asleep. About half an hour later, I discovered that she had lost a shoe while sleeping. I took her off my back and placed her down. I knew we needed to find that missing shoe because our mother couldn't afford new ones. I had to go back to search for it, so I told my sister to wait precisely there.
A man overheard this and stopped me just before I set off. He asked, "You're leaving your sister here to look for the shoe! What would you do if she isn't here when you return?" I was at a loss for words to answer the question. He continued, "It's okay if you can't find the shoe, but it's not okay to lose your sister." Then he sent us to mom's workplace by taxi.
Throughout my life, I have believed in the kindness of many strangers. I feel remorseful that I can't find them and express my gratitude. I don't even remember what their faces looked like, but they made me understand what is more important - a person or a thing.

How to Keep Your New Year's Resolutions
Have you ever made New Year's resolutions but struggled to stick to them? Well, you're not alone. Here's some useful advice on how to make them happen.
About 45% of Americans make New Year's resolutions, but only 8% of them manage to keep them. Let's explore how you can be part of that successful minority.
• Choose something that truly matters to you.
• Make your resolution clear and precise. For instance, if your resolution is to do better in school, does that mean achieving all As and Bs? Or does it imply improving your grades in math or science?
• Develop a plan that you can follow. If you say, "I'm going to study for two hours every day," you might do it for a week or two. Then you might get bored or become too busy and want to give up. Instead, you could say, "I'm going to do my homework every day. On the days when I don't have somewhere to go, like for sports practice or music lessons, I'm going to study for 30 minutes more after school. Before tests, I'm going to start studying hard for them a week in advance."
• Write down your resolution and place it somewhere where you can see it every day.
• Share your resolution with someone, like your mom, dad, or best friend. They can assist you in keeping it.
• Remember, it's your resolution. If you give up, you can always restart and you don't have to wait until the next year!

A. Some B. Most
C. Half D. Almost all
2. Which is a specific resolution?

C. Reading six books by November.

The Eating Habits in Thailand
In Thailand, having meals is an interesting and unique experience. It comes with its own set of customs and traditions.
It's an enjoyable time when Thais have their meals. Thais eat using forks, spoons, and sometimes chopsticks. The fork is used to push the food onto the spoon. The spoon is employed to consume soup and food. You won't find a knife when Thais are having a meal because the food is already cut. In Thailand and at Thai restaurants, diners share their food and a meal is never ordered for just one person. The middle of the table is filled with various things to eat for everyone. People take small portions from each dish, only what they can eat in a few mouthfuls, and come back for more once they have finished.
In a restaurant, traditionally, it's the elder ladies who order the food and the bill is paid by the wealthiest person. Many Thai people are adopting Western customs, such as eating with knives and forks, but many old Thai traditions and superstitions are still in practice today. For example, it's regarded as bad luck to leave your chopsticks in a bowl. It's considered good manners to leave a little food on your plate to indicate that you are full, but leaving rice on your plate is seen as wasteful.
