Unit 3 Welcome to our school!

穿透雾霾
“Papa, please,” Akeisha said. “I just want to see the stars one
time, to get above the haze(雾霾).”
She knew her father wouldn’t agree with her. If her mother had been still
alive, many things might have been different, but that was like wishing
for clean air. Some things were just never going to happen.

Papa closed the lid(盖子) of the sanitizer(消毒杀菌剂) harder
than he should. “I’ve already told you no. Your nana(外婆) should never
have suggested it. She knows how I feel about the rooftops(屋顶). I’m
afraid to stay high.”
He looked over Akeisha’s head to where Nana stood. “She’s twelve,” Papa went on. “She is just a kid. She should think about her ▲ , not stars.”

“It’s the age to do schoolwork,” Nana replied, hanging her jacket
on an empty hook(挂钩) by the door. “Not everything is important, but
the key card-well, that’s really important.” And she made sure that the
door was closed.
Four hours later, Akeisha closed her Maths textbook. Maths knowledge had stayed in her mind. If she wasn’t ready for the test, more studying wasn’t going to help.

Finally, the whole family were on the rooftop. They all looked tired,
looking up at the green-yellow haze. Akeisha never saw a different sky. But
she was sure she could see the sky with stars that night.

Unit 4 School days
任务型阅读。
兄弟齐心
Every Sunday, the competition starts. The three of us will set our
alarm clocks to wake us up earlier than anyone else. I set my alarm clock for
six in the morning, hoping that my brothers won’t start before me.
The sound of the vacuum cleaner(真空吸尘器) . They do
their chores first! I jump out of bed and run into the bathroom. I start the
only chore for me. I will surely clear up the road when they build an igloo
(冰屋), I think sadly, cleaning the toilet(抽水马桶).
When I’ve finished cleaning the toilet, my brothers come into the
bathroom to watch me clean the bathtub(浴缸). They say that I woke up
too late and will have to do the longest chore. “Whoever finishes last has to
clear up the road. Remember, Tom?” my elder brother says to me with a
smile. And we put on our big coats and snow pants to go outside.
A It is white everywhere and it’s difficult for us to open our
eyes. B My brothers happily play in the yard, but I have to walk in the
snow to the road. C Each shovelful of snow feels heavier than the one
before. D .
Suddenly, I hear the sound of shovelling snow. Turning around, I see
my brothers busily shovelling snow from the road. “We’re not helping; we
just need snow for our igloo,” my younger brother says quickly.
Soon, shovel by shovel, we clear out the road together and
get enough snow to build
the igloo of our dreams. We spend the rest of our relaxing Sunday in the
igloo drinking the sweetest hot cocoa ever.

A device that turns plants into pets
A new device lets potted plants interact with humans. Called PlantPetz,
it has sensors that are inserted into the soil. They detect moisture levels and
make the plant sensitive to the human touch and sounds. When PlantPetz
determines that the soil is too dry, it makes a bubbling sound that tells its
owner to water it. When a person touches the leaves or rotates the pot, the
plant moves and makes chirping or cooing sounds. The battery-powered
device also has Bluetooth to play music, which makes the plant “dance”.
